“Bye Bye, Binary”

Illinois Adopts “National Sex Education Standards"

In the spring of 2022, a Central School (D39/Wilmette) Fourth Grade Teacher read aloud to her class It Feels Good to be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity.” According to the book, when you were born "people couldn't tell how you felt [about whether you were a boy or girl]. They looked at you and made a guess. Maybe they got it right, maybe they got it wrong." Kids are also introduced to the terms "transgender," "cisgender," and "non-binary."

According to the baby board book Bye Bye, Binary,” recently spotted at the Book Stall in Winnetka, “gender norms” are “only social constructs.”

Now that Illinois has become the one and only state in the nation to mandate the National Sex Education Standards,” Illinois school children will be taught progressive gender theory and much more starting as early as kindergarten. In addition, progressive views of “reproductive justice, racial justice, social justice, and equity” are embedded in the National Standards’ “intersectional approach.”

The National Sex Ed Standards were promulgated by left-wing educators and activists affiliated with Advocates for Youth, Answer, and SIECUS: Sex Ed for Social Change, and are being promoted by various progressive organizations, including Planned Parenthood.

Although Illinois schools are not required to include “comprehensive sexual health education” in their curriculum, schools that do must ensure the following:

Kindergarten through 2nd grade students learn how to:

  • “List . . . body parts, including the genitals”
  • “Define gender,” i.e., the “set of cultural identities, expressions and roles—typically attached to a person’s sex assigned at birth” and “[d]iscuss the range of ways people express their gender”

Grades 3-5:

  • “Explain common human sexual development,” including “sexual feelings,” “sexual intercourse,” and “masturbation”
  • “Explain that gender expression and . . . identity exist along a spectrum”
  • “Describe . . . the potential role of hormone blockers on [students] who identify as transgender.”

Throughout the National Sex Ed Standards, there is a focus on teaching students to identify “credible sources of information” about the topics taught. But based on the resources referenced in the National Sex Ed Standards and separately by the Illinois State Board of Education, only progressive sources are deemed to be “credible.”

North Shore schools have not formally announced whether they will opt out of comprehensive Sex Ed based on the National Standards.

If you have school-age children, you should ask whether your school will be teaching Sex Ed based on the National Standards. If they are, you can opt your child out of Illinois’ mandated Sex Ed, but must do so in writing.
Remember to submit your Title IX comments!

Title IX rules redefines "sex" in sex-based discrimination to apply to sexual orientation and gender identity. They also open the door to biological boys competing against girls.

You can learn more here and here about the onerous new Title IX provisions, and can click here to voice your concerns and submit comments about Title IX to the DOE. DOE must answer every comment submitted -- your voice will be heard and every comment helps.
