Sunflowers In Bridgewater

Jenn Owen captured a picture of beautiful sunflowers growing in front of the Saint Thomas Aquinas church in Bridgewater.

They are a very popular sight for the people who take daily walks by them.

The Nip

Lake Nippenicket borders Route 104 and is close to Route 24 and Interstate 495. The Nip, as it is called around town, is part of the Taunton River Watershed. It, and all water in our community, empties into the Taunton River. In 1990, the lake was surveyed relative to the fish that call The Nip home and species there included yellow perch, pumpkinseed, bluegill, large-mouth bass, white perch, black crappie, chain pickerel, brown bullhead, golden shiner and American eel.

Named by Wampanoags as the place where the great spirits dwell, the Nip spans 354 acres and is a naturally occurring fresh water body.

Vote By Mail

Look for the application in your mailbox or here is a link to download the application.
In July, a new law was passed to allow all registered voters in Massachusetts to vote by mail in any 2020 election, with no excuse needed.
As required by the new law, a Vote by Mail application will be mailed to every person who was registered to vote by July 1 and who had not already requested an absentee ballot for the State Primary or for all elections this year. A second mailing will be sent out in September to all voters who have not already applied for a Vote by Mail ballot for the November election. The applications are pre-addressed to your local election official and no postage is necessary.

Vote by Mail applications must be delivered to your local election office no later than 4 business days before the election. For a State Primary ballot, your application must reach your local election office no later than August 26. For a State Election ballot, your application must reach your local election office no later than October 28.

If you wish to vote by mail, you are strongly encouraged to return your application as early as possible, to make sure that you will receive your ballot in time to return it and have it be counted.

Vote by Mail applications are available for  download  and may also be requested by  contacting the Elections Division .
You can find more information on voting by mail on our  Voting by Mail FAQs  page.

Better Bean Team Thanks Loyal Customers

"We wanted to take a moment to express a sincere thanks to our loyal community members. Opening during the pandemic has definitely been a challenge. Yet, we’re committed to you and to remaining open. We also realize that our contactless opening has been challenging for some, but most have hung in there with us and we truly appreciate it.
As an explanation for our process, we have staff members with autoimmune issues and have implemented the current system to ensure their safety.
Truth be told some customers have told us that they will no longer visit us and/or that we’re operating a bad business model. We understand and respect their position. Their inconvenience is also our inconvenience. We have to operate this way for the short term for the benefit of everyone, but particularly for those on our team with autoimmune problems.
The silver lining is that the positive feedback has been exponentially greater than the negative. This feedback is why we’re working so hard to get back to some normalcy.
When you visit us the best way to optimize your experience is to call ahead or order online. We have a rapid pick up area or you can enjoy your java/lunch at our outdoor seating.
Thank you all so much, be safe, and keep caffeinated." - Better Bean Coffee Co.

Voices of Justice

On Sunday, August 2nd, at 10 a , the Central Square Congregational Church, UCC in Bridgewater will present a special live streamed program featuring the Justice Choir Songbook, a collection of protest songs and civil rights songs compiled with the goal of helping communities “raise your voices together for change, equity, love, and peace.” The Songbook can be downloaded here, so you can get to know the songs and sing along at home during the performance:  www.justicechoir.org.

The Justice Choir Songbook will be performed online by vocalists James Dargan and Lisa Graham, accompanied by Julia Scott Carey on the piano. James Dargan will also perform some of his original compositions. Poet Charles Coe will also be writing new words to an old American hymn tune by the Matilda T Durham, one of the first female hymn writers in the United States, called “America! America! To Glory Arise,” and James Dargan will be premiering Charles Coe’s hymn on this occasion. There will be additional live or pre-recorded performances and readings by Reverend Elizabeth Stotts, educator Zachary Boissonneau, organist Sylvia Berry, soprano Karen Slack, bass-baritone Ian Pomerantz, and countertenor Reginald Mobley. The service will be live-streamed on Facebook, YouTube, and cable TV. Links can be found that day on the Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/csccuccbridgewaterma ) and on www.csccucc.org

Following, we will have a discussion via Zoom about music as a form of protest, led by conductor and educator Anthony Trecek-King. You are all invited to join in the discussion. For an invitation to the Zoom meeting, or for more information, send an email to [email protected] .
REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS ARE BACK !

Friday, July 10th, Governor Baker rescinded his temporary order suspending all local shopping bag laws and banning the use of reusable bags.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent update on transmission indicates that the virus spreads primarily through the infected respiratory droplets emitted during close contact with another person, hence the continued need for face masks.
Banning re-use of bags was a precautionary measure, erring on the side of safety, and the MA Dept of Public Health recognizes the public health problem created by the damage done to our environment with plastic, and so is now encouraging their use again.

Genealogy
Looking back at our ancestry helps us understand today. There's comfort in knowing what they went through so you can live your life. And then there's the sheer act of telling and retelling stories, it helps us to understand our position in a long line of ancestors who have wrestled with similar issues to the ones we wrestle with every day. We all have stories.

"I like to cook, and I tend to make those one-pot meat dishes of my Hungarian ancestors. Also, I make a great Bolognese."
~ Goldie Hawn

"There were times, especially when I was traveling for 'Eat, Pray, Love,' when, I swear to God, I would feel this weight of my female ancestors, all those Swedish farmwives from beyond the grave who were like, 'Go! Go to Naples! Eat more pizza! Go to India, ride an elephant! Do it! Swim in the Indian Ocean. Read those books. Learn a language."
~ Elizabeth Gilbert

"In China there is a holiday around the death of your ancestors where everyone goes to the cemetery. It's a celebratory thing. It's very colorful." ~ Lulu Wang

"Black Girl Magic means that I have the power to overcome anything. Especially when we're in a world where you're told that you can't do something or you're less than, I'm reminded that my ancestors have overcome so much. There's still so much work to be done, and I have the power to overcome it." ~ Michelle Carter

"Our religion is the traditions of our ancestors - the dreams of our old men, given them in solemn hours of the night by the Great Spirit; and the visions of our sachems, and is written in the hearts of our people." ~ Chief Seattle
“You are a light. You are the light. Never let anyone—any person or any force—dampen, dim or diminish your light. Study the path of others to make your way easier and more abundant. Lean toward the whispers of your own heart, discover the universal truth, and follow its dictates.” –~John Lewis
