FAMILY HISTORY MONTH
Welcome! The month of October is the beginning of Fall. The weather gets cooler, football begins, and we see the changing of the colors of the leaves on trees. This month also focuses on another kind of tree, our family tree. October is Family History Month. In honor of this topic, this month’s issues focus on tracing your family tree on your lunch break, a new title in our collection, a genealogy program about using DNA for adoption searches, and more.
TRACE YOUR FAMILY TREE ON YOUR LUNCH BREAK

As part of October’s Family History Month, the library is offering a fun list of family tree-related activities that you can take part in during your lunch break! Whether you have 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or even 1 hour, you just may discover something you never knew about your ancestors.
GENETIC GENEALOGY: THE BASICS AND BEYOND

Genetic Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond was recently added to the Indian Trails Library’s Genealogy and Local History collection. This book provides readers, genealogists, and researchers with the knowledge and confidence to use DNA testing for family research. For example the book discusses various DNA tests to use in research, how to determine what DNA segments came from which ancestor, how DNA testing assists when records may not exist, how testing works alongside oral family history, and much more. Kitty Cooper, a genetic Genealogist and speaker, will present about DNA testing for adoption searches. She will cover the information needed to get started with DNA testing, how to find unknown biological parents, how to build your family tree and other methodologies. If you are unable to attend, the recorded event will be available on YouTube.
