REYNOLD'S GRANT UPDATE
ST. LUKE'S, JAMESTOWN. NEW YORK
| | |
Earlier this year St. Luke’s was awarded the Diocese of Western New York Reynolds Grant to support its work to reach out to the Latino/a community in Jamestown—with the hope of creating a Spanish language expression of its ministry, Iglesia de San Lucas Episcopal. The grant has funded Spanish language accusation for St. Luke’s priests, hymnals in Spanish and special cultural programming.
On December 13th - 14th, St. Luke’s will host three events as part its work with our Spanish-speaking neighbors and everyone from the Partnership is invited to join in.
On Friday, December 13that 6:30pm St. Luke’s will be hosting a community celebration of Las Posadas. Las Posadas is a traditional Latin American celebration that dramatizes Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and their search for shelter before the birth of Jesus. Las Posadas includes processions, prayers, and song as Mary and Joseph go from house to house, looking for a place with room for them to stay. The commemoration ends with a grand celebration, when Mary and Joseph are recognized and offered hospitality; in that moment, the prayer service becomes a party with food, music, and a piñata. St. Luke’s Episcopal (Iglesia de San Lucas Episcopal) is partnering with the New Neighbors Coalition to host our first bilingual Las Posadas celebration on Friday, December 13th at 6:30 pm.

A Spanish Sacred Music Workshop will follow the next day, on Saturday, December 14th at 1 pm. This hands-on workshop will be an opportunity for participants to experience and learn sacred music from Latin American contexts. This is an excellent opportunity for Organists, Directors of Music, Choir members, and others to enrich their worship craft.
Leading both events will be the Rev. Yuriria (Yuri) Rodríguez , a priest from the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis, currently serving as curate at Church of the Nativity in Lawrence. Yuri is a native Costa Rican singer, artist, and educator, who specializes in Latin American music and culture. For 20+ years, Yuri has performed in, and conducted choirs of sacred and Latin American music in the United States. Through music, she has developed programs and curriculums to accompany diverse communities in their journeys of faith, affirm their sense of identity, and celebrate God already present in the other. Yuri describes herself as a priest with a passion for learning to be in liminal spaces between English and Spanish, between Latino and US cultures, between tacos and BBQ.

SEVEN WEEK ADVENT
ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
| | |
“TWO KANE CHURCHES COME TOGETHER FOR A UNIQUE ADVENT WORSHIP EXPERIENCE”
The Presbyterian Church of Kane, and St. John’s Episcopal Church will be joining for Evening Vespers this Advent Season. The Sunday evening services will take place at St. John’s, 427 Chase Street in Kane, beginning on November 10 at 6:30 PM, and continue through Sunday, December 22. The Rev. Carol Sharp and The Rev. Rebecca Harris will be jointly leading worship and fellowship each week.
The Rev. Harris stated, “Advent is one of the oldest of all Christian commemorations and was celebrated beginning on the Sunday after All Saints Sunday. Since the early 2000’s there has been a modern revival of the ancient tradition of marking the Advent Season with seven weeks, rather than the four weeks before Christmas. Originally, for the earliest Christians, this was a time to look forward to the returning of Jesus, the ‘Second Coming,’ rather than Jesus’s birth, which was not widely celebrated until the 8th century AD.
By lengthening the Advent season, we have time to reflect upon the meaning of both Jesus’s birth and His return. It also helps to move our minds away from the commercial holiday celebrations to a deeper understanding of the season and Christ’s presence in our lives, not only at Christmas, but all year long.
Everyone, of every faith, or no faith, is welcome to join us as, with hope and joy, we rediscover Advent. Let us, during this season anticipate not only Jesus’s birth, but his coming again, and the establishment of “God’s Kingdom, on Earth as it is in Heaven’.”
Each Sunday Vesper service will be followed by a “Coffee, Dessert and Conversation” time in the Fellowship Hall.
