Kinship/Grandfamilies & the FAFSA: College Financial Aid

In response to a TA request from a kinship navigator, we worked quickly to develop and post this resource. If you work with grandparents and other kin raising high school seniors, please widely share this new resource. It has detailed directions to help students raised by kin to complete the FAFSA, the federal financial aid application that opens doors to money to pay for college. As with most things, the instructions for these students are different than for students being raised by parents. The great news is that, in most circumstances, only the student’s income and assets are considered in determining aid! So, it's very important to fill out the application correctly because it can help ensure bright futures for these young adults. Access the resource.

Accepting Requests for Assistance

As always, the Network is accepting individual requests for assistance from professionals who work in systems or organizations that serve kinship/grandfamilies. Fill out the request assistance form to receive support from our team. Learn more and sign up to access our resources!

The Network is supported by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $9,950,000 with 95 percentage funded by ACL/HHS and $523,684 and 5 percentage funded by non-government sources. The contents are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor an endorsement, by ACL/HHS, or the U.S. Government.

Intergenerational Spotlight

Museum of Contemporary Art

Tucson’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) has developed two intergenerational programs designed to bridge the gap between youth (ages 13+) and older adults (ages 55+) in the LGBTQIA+ community. Both programs help combat chronic loneliness that affects many LGBTQIA+ members. Older adults and youth are recognized and supported as equals in the program. Read more about Tucson's Museum of Contemporary Art here.

Each issue, Generations United is spotlighting a recipient of our Intergenerational Program Certification or a program highlighted in our Shared Site Learning Network newsletter. The certification is an annual recognition of outstanding programs bringing older and younger participants together and is based on rigorous standards of program effectiveness and sustainability. Learn more about the Intergenerational Program Certification here.

"As we ended our discussion and began to enjoy the cake together, I watched how the young people engaged with the seniors. I heard laughter and stories. I watched magic in action. This was a treasure and something I knew we had to hold on to."
