Each week, we'll be highlighting a program from our resource, Staying Connected While Staying Apart: Intergenerational Programs and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Next up is Teen Internship Program of DOROT in New York.

This program is one of the intergenerational initiatives that went virtual during the pandemic. This program includes approximately 100 high school students in ninth through twelfth grades to receive high-quality training and leadership development while volunteering in small groups. This unique opportunity for ongoing community service meaningfully connects teens with older adults one afternoon per week through friendly phone calls, intergenerational workshops, and creative arts programming. Over the summer of 1969, ahead of Woodstock, another music festival took place. The Harlem Cultural Festival lasted six weeks during the Black Power Movement and featured Black artists such as Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Mavis Staples, and Ray Barretto. That moment is highlighted in a new documentary, Summer of Soul, the directorial debut of Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, the Roots drummer and co-leader of the group. The film was created from 40 hours of live festival footage along with news accounts and recent interviews with artists and concertgoers. NEW! A Seat at the Table: Piloting Continuous Learning to Engage Fathers and Parental Relatives in Child Welfare. This new report from Mathematica and the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families highlights a methodology by the Fathers and Continuous Learning (FCL) in Child Welfare project. This method known as the Breakthrough Series Collaborative (BSC) was tested to improve placement stability and permanency outcomes for children by engaging their fathers and paternal relatives. This latest set of free resources, developed by Generations United with support from RRF-Foundation for Aging, aims to strengthen and expand intergenerational programs. The new publications—Making the Case for Intergenerational Programs, Fact Sheet: Intergenerational Programs Benefit Everyone, and Staying Connected While Staying Apart: Intergenerational Programs & the COVID-19 Pandemic—support the growing field of practice by increasing the knowledge and skills of people working to connect and support older adults, children, and youth.
