Generations This Week

This New York Times article by journalist, Katharine Q. Seelye does a great job capturing the sacrifices grandparents are making because of the current opioid crisis. Generations United spoke with Seelye several times as she was researching her story. Read the article, and stay tuned. Generations United's 2016 State of Grandfamilies report will focus on the impact of the opioid and heroin epidemic on grandfamilies.

Generations United Welcomes New Board Members

At its May 19 meeting, the Generations United Board of Directors welcomed three new members: Karyne Jones, Janet McUlsky and Dr. Jack Rowe. Congratulations and a warm welcome!

Karyne Jones is President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Caucus and Center on Black Aging, Inc. (NCBA) and NCBA Housing Management and Development Corporation.

Prior to joining NCBA, Karyne was Executive Director of Federal Relations with SBC Telecommunications, Inc., (now ATT). Before that, s he served for eight years in the Texas Legislature.

Janet McUlsky joined Pfizer Inc in November, 2001 and now serves as Senior Director in Alliance Development. She is responsible for National Alliance Development relationships and strategies for the federal healthcare advocacy community, including organizations representing patients, consumers, seniors, women, nurses, veterans and many others.

Dr. John Rowe - a distinguished and recognized scholar, author and leader in the field of aging - is the former Chairman and CEO of Aetna. He currently is Professor of Health Policy and Aging at Columbia University and leads the Mac Arthur Foundation's Network on Aging Society. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Rockefeller Foundation.

Announcing the 2015-2016 Winners of the Listen to a Life Story Contest

The Legacy Project's annual Listen to a Life Contest includes a young person 8-18 years old interviewing an older adult 50 years or over about their life experiences.

This years contest awarded a Lenovo Yoga Tablet to the "Grand Prize Timeless Award" winner. The "10 Legacy Awards" honorees received a keepsake timepiece. Read the winning stories.

In honor of National Foster Care Month, we highlight Jimmy Wayne's Walk to Beautiful, "the powerfully emotive account of Jimmy's horrendous childhood and the love shown him by Russell and Bea Costner, the elderly couple who gave him a stable home and provided the chance to complete his education. Healthy Aging Initiative in Massachusetts and Rhode Island Funded. The Tufts Health Plan Foundation is currently accepting requests in the following two areas: Policy and Advocacy and Foundation President's Leadership Fund. In the Policy and Advocacy category, support is provided for efforts that advance communities toward achieving age-friendly status. The President's Leadership Fund supports community leaders in their work with multiple stakeholders that leads to age-friendly communities and addresses barriers to success in the most vulnerable communities. The Retirement Research Foundation Accepting Applications for Projects in Aging

Based in Chicago, the Retirement Research Foundation is one of the nation's first private foundations devoted exclusively to aging and retirement issues. Advocacy, training, and research projects, all with national relevance, are considered from organizations located anywhere in the United States. Proposals for direct service and advocacy projects that have a local focus are considered from organizations based in seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin, or Florida.
