American Rescue Plan Act Provisions to Help Children, Youth, Older Adults and Families |
President Biden recently signed the American Rescue Plan Act into law. The $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package provides immediate relief for children, older adults, and families; works to address the racial and economic injustices that COVID-19 has exacerbated; cuts child poverty in half in 2021; and creates a National Technical Assistance Center on Grandfamilies and Kinship Families. Virtual Intergenerational Writers Workshop
This workshop is a collaboration between older adult volunteers from Culver City Senior Center and sixth graders from Turning Point School. The program, which started in 2010, went virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their preliminary Zoom meeting took place on Jan. 13. "The Intergenerational Writers Workshop is one of the highlights of the sixth-grade year at Turning Point," said Josh Lesser, who teaches Drama and Humanities. Learn more.

A Grandson's Gift — A Spotlight — For His Grandfather's WWII Band
Jason Burt, of Clarksburg, Calif., knew his grandfather played the trumpet in World War II. He had listened to stories about the 746th Far East Air Force Band boosting morale for servicemen on the front lines of the Philippines theater. But, for decades, the family hadn't seen his grandfather's vinyl recordings of the ensemble until 2019, when they were clearing out their grandparents' house. With the help of Grammy award-winning sound engineers, he digitized and prepared recordings of his grandfather, Richard Burt, playing trumpet in the 746th Far East Air Force Band. Learn more. |

NEW! Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19. This initiative—which will award up to $4 million for projects in urban communities and up to $3 million for those in rural communities—seeks applications for projects to demonstrate the effectiveness of local government implementation of evidence-based health literacy strategies that are culturally appropriate to enhance COVID-19 testing, contact tracing and/or other mitigation measures (e.g., public health prevention practices and vaccination) in racial and ethnic minority populations and other socially vulnerable populations, including racial and ethnic minority rural communities. Deadline: April 20, 2021. Learn more.
NEW! AARP Community Challenge. Nonprofit organizations and government agencies may apply for grants for community-based projects to improve public spaces, housing, transportation, civic engagement, coronavirus recovery, diversity and inclusion, and more. Projects that demonstrate the ability to accelerate and sustain the community's livability for all, especially those 50 plus, and/or projects that focus on diversity and inclusion are of special interest. Grants will range from several hundred dollars for smaller short-term activities to several thousand or tens of thousands of dollars for larger projects. Deadline: April 14, 2021. Learn more.
NEW! Power of Youth Challenge. The Challenge provides young people (ages 13-19) across the U.S. with the opportunity to identify a need in their communities related to racial healing and apply for a $250 grant to support a (COVID-safe) service project. In addition to building their own leadership, service, and career skills, grant winners will have the opportunity to increase understanding, communication, caring, and respect within their communities through service projects that address racial division and injustice. NEW! Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. Each year, the Barron Prize honors 25 outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and the environment. The Prize welcomes applications from young people who are between the ages of eight and 18 (not yet age 19), permanent residents of and currently residing in the U.S. or Canada, and currently working on an inspiring service project, or have done so within the past 12 months. Winners each receive $10,000 to be applied to their higher education or to their service project, as well as recognition gifts, networking opportunities, and media coverage. Deadline: April 15, 2021. NEW! The Amphion Foundation. Grants are provided to publicly-supported nonprofit performing ensembles, presenters, festivals, and music service organizations that have a history of substantial commitment to contemporary concert music at a high level of excellence. In general, grants range between $1,000 and $7,500, although larger grants may be awarded to major performing organizations with an extraordinary commitment to contemporary concert music or a particularly significant project. Applying organizations must have been in existence for at least two years, and have completed two full seasons of programming prior to the time of application. Deadline: April 1, 2021. Learn more.
