Program Spotlight - Elder Service Partner Program

The mission of the Elder Service Partner Program, a Generations United Program of Distinction, is to link the lives of college-aged students with those of older adults in an effort to enrich both by building meaningful intergenerational relationships while serving together. For the ESP Program, students are paired with an Elder Service Partner (ESP) in completing two types of service. First, students join their ESPs in completing 15 hours of volunteer service over the course of the semester. They're encouraged to join their elders in fulfilling the obligations their ESPs have already made to the community. The pairs frequently volunteer at places such as food pantries, nursing facilities, soup kitchens, churches and synagogues, pregnancy centers, fraternity service organizations and other non-profit organizations. In the second activity, students perform interviews with their ESPs in order to create a chapter of their life stories. Specific skills for this assignment are reviewed early in the semester and students are encouraged to meet on at least three occasions to collect information. Learn more.

Each week, Generations United is spotlighting a recipient of our Intergenerational Program Certification. The certification is an annual recognition of outstanding programs bringing older and younger participants together and is based on rigorous standards of program effectiveness and sustainability. AmeriCorps Seniors invites organizations to submit applications for the FY 2024 Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs. These funding opportunities specifically help AmeriCorps Seniors focus Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent projects on issues that are critical to communities and help expand the programs to more geographies. The AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion Program grants must establish programming that engages adults fifty-five (55) years and older to serve as volunteers who help seniors live independently. The AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program grants must provide and/or facilitate access to services and resources that contribute to improved educational outcomes for economically disadvantaged people, especially children and for children with special and/or exceptional need. Applications due Thursday, February 1, 2024, 5:00 PM ET. Learn more about the Senior Companion funding here and the Foster Grandparent funding here.

"All the work they put in, traveling to games, making sure I had basketball shoes, all the things it takes to raise a kid, for them to get rewarded like that was special, especially where my (great) grandma was at. She didn’t live too much longer after that. Me getting drafted and realizing my dream was icing on the cake for them.
