Generations United's Intergenerational Policy Update

Thanks to your advocacy, proposed cuts to TANF and the elimination of the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) have been excluded from the latest House tax bill. This is a meaningful step—but threats to vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP remain as Congress continues work on the FY2026 budget. Learn more in our latest Policy Update.

Outreach Brochures

As part of our effort to encourage all government systems and nonprofits that interact with kinship/grandfamilies to coordinate with each other to better serve families, we have been creating system-specific outreach brochures. Each brochure briefly introduces kinship/grandfamilies, explains how the families interact with the named system, and describes why cross-system collaboration would be beneficial. The idea is to raise awareness and educate individuals who are new to this topic. You can share these pieces with colleagues and potential partners in the named system to help make the case for targeted support and collaboration for kinship/grandfamilies. Our newest brochures are for education and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). We already have brochures for aging, nutrition, and Family Resource Centers, and more are on the way. To access the brochures on our website, go to the “Who We Serve” tab and select the “We Serve Government Agencies and Nonprofits” page. Then, scroll down to the list of systems and click the link associated with system of interest.

Please reach out to us at info@gksnetwork.org if you would like printed copies of the existing brochures or access to the professional printing files.

Accepting Requests for Assistance

As always, the Network is accepting individual requests for assistance from professionals who work in systems or organizations that serve kinship/grandfamilies. Fill out the request assistance form to receive support from our team. Learn more and sign up for our monthly newsletter!

The Network is supported by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $9,950,000 with 95 percentage funded by ACL/HHS and $523,684 and 5 percentage funded by non-government sources. The contents are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor an endorsement, by ACL/HHS, or the U.S. Government.

Intergenerational Spotlight

Westminster Canterbury Richmond

The mission of Westminster Canterbury Richmond, a newly designated Generations United Program of Distinction, is to provide services in a compassionate, professional, holistic manner through an inspiring environment and dynamic leadership for residents, employees, and others they serve. Westminster Canterbury Richmond is a faith based Continuing Care Retirement Community serving children from 6 weeks through 12 years of age, and is home to nearly 900 residents in independent, assisted, memory support, and healthcare living. Within this shared site community, intergenerational interactions are not a separate program but are infused into the lives of all those living, working, and participating in the regular events of each day. Many residents have expressed that the presence of the children within the community is one of the main reasons they chose to live here. Learn more about Westminster Canterbury Richmond here.

Each issue, Generations United is spotlighting a recipient of our Intergenerational Program Certification or a program highlighted in our Shared Site Learning Network newsletter. The certification is an annual recognition of outstanding programs bringing older and younger participants together and is based on rigorous standards of program effectiveness and sustainability. New Survey Tool For Intergenerational Connection Published

Congratulations to Shelbie Turner, Karen Hooker, Shannon Jarrott, and G. John Geldhoff on the publication of their groundbreaking work developing and validating a new measure for intergenerational contact! Their research offers a much-needed tool for better understanding and improving relationships across generations and is a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and community programs. The development of this instrument was generously supported by the RRF Foundation for Aging. The Intergenerational Contact Survey is now freely available through Oregon State University and can be accessed here.

"Seeing our residents light up when the children come in is something truly special. There’s laughter, clapping, and sometimes even tears—happy ones. It reminds us all how powerful human connection really is."
