Breaking Barriers on Stage: African American Ballet Dancers who Made History
In honor of Black History Month, we share Nelson George's documentary, A Ballerina's Tale, which highlights how older African-American dancers paved the way for future generations. "These dancers are all connected, each of them in their own time chipping away at the alabaster mold that had been preserved at the pinnacle of classical dance by racist standards of beauty," according to PBS.org. Misty Copeland, 33, confides in Raven Wilkinson, 81, that her quest for excellence transcends artistic achievement. "The first time I saw you was in the Ballet Russe film, I cried my eyes out, because I didn't even know a black ballerina of your level existed," Copeland said. "And so that was kind of the start of this mission I had, to learn more about black ballerinas, to try and educate other people about who you are." Learn more

Two bills in the Georgia legislature would support grandfamilies, according to a story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. One bill would give relative caregivers an extension on providing documentation to enroll a child in school. Another would make it easier for kinship carers to get medical care for the child in their custody. Read the article | See the House Study Committee's Report on Kinship Care.
