Letter to the Editor in  The New York Times
In response to a New York Times article on child welfare, our Donna Butts North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) 's Mary Boo and   National Foster Parent Association's Irene Clements explain why children do better in families. 
" When children cannot remain with their birth parents," they wrote, "the comfort of a grandparent or an aunt eases the trauma of separation." Read the full letter.
Meet Us in Milwaukee! Generations United's 19th Biennial International Conference
We are thrilled to announce that we are teaming up with the St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care to co-host next year's International Conference. Plans are underway for the conference in late Spring 2017 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As the premier conference for the intergenerational field to connect, spark ideas, and learn from the experts, this is one opportunity you don't want to miss!

The Health and Human Services Office of Adolescent Health's New TAG Resources

ReServe's READY Program
This week's cool ideas is ReServe's READY Program in New York, which helps low-income students apply to college by training and deploying professionals age 55 and up as college mentors.

Think Intergenerational - Funding Opportunities
Innovations in American Government Awards. Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation is offering the $100,000 Roy and Lila Ash Innovations Award for Public Engagement in Government, a special Innovations Award that will recognize government-led programs that demonstrate novel and effective approaches to increasing public engagement and participation in the governance of towns, cities, states, and the nation. Deadline: April 15, 2016. Learn more

National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Awards. The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is accepting applications from a  fter-school and out-of-school time arts and humanities programs.The twelve award-winning programs this year will each receive $10,000 and an invitation to accept their award from the President's Committee's Honorary Chairman, First Lady Michelle Obama, at a ceremony at the White House.  Deadline: Feb. 2, 2016.  Learn more

Veteran Housing Grant.  The Home Depot Foundation's Veteran Housing Grants Program awards grants to nonprofit organizations for the development and repair of veterans housing. Awards typically range from $100,000 to $500,000.  Deadline: Feb. 24, 2016.  Learn more

Research
Engaging Youth Who are Not Traditionally Asked to Serve. This resource, from Youth Service America, will give you constructive ideas and tips on how to engage a group of young people who are too often overlooked when planning service projects. Learn more

State of Grandfamilies in America: 2015. In this  second edition of the annual State of Grandfamilies in America report , Generations United identified key state laws and policies specifically designed to address barriers and better support the diverse and unique population of grandparents and other relatives raising children. 

A Guide to Creating Teen-Adult Conversations in Your Community.  After publishing  What We Can't Tell You: Teenagers Talk to the Adults in Their Lives , What Kids Can Do co-hosted public forums in five cities that promoted honest conversations between teenagers and adults. WKCD created a free 40-page guide filled with sample panel discussions, interactive exercises, handouts, tips, resources, and readings. Learn more

The Resounding Resiliency of Grandfamilies: Financial Stories from Older Relatives Caring for Children in Lower-Income Communities. 
Citi Community Development commissioned this report by Generations United and CFED , which  highlights the financial strengths and challenges facing grandparents raising grandchildren in low-income communities. Learn more
