Intergenerational Spotlight

University of Rhode Island Preschool Project

Over the past two years preschoolers at the University of Rhode Island Child Development Centers, older adults from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and the broader community, and undergraduate students worked together to create innovative art projects. These included watercolor paintings, rolling paintings done with marbles, photography presentations, and weaving projects. A ‘Special Place‘ photography exhibit involved children and older adults submitting photos of places special to them. Through follow-up discussions, children and older adults could see they had much in common. All activities were aligned with curriculum goals and emphasized the importance of having meaningful connections across generations. Read more about the University of Rhode Island Preschool Project here.

Each issue, Generations United is spotlighting a recipient of our Intergenerational Program Certification or a program highlighted in our Shared Site Learning Network newsletter. The certification is an annual recognition of outstanding programs bringing older and younger participants together and is based on rigorous standards of program effectiveness and sustainability. Learn more about the Intergenerational Program Certification here.

"We know that loneliness and social isolation are widespread among seniors. Intergenerational friendships provide a powerful solution, creating opportunities for older adults to build meaningful relationships while being valued for their wisdom and experience. There’s nothing quite like witnessing the spark of connection between a young adult and a senior with nearly a century of life lessons to share."

— Marissa Birne, program manager for youth, arts, and volunteer initiatives at Hebrew SeniorLife
