The Mellon Foundation has awarded a 3.5 year, $3 million grant to support a collaboration between Georgetown University and Howard University in the establishment of a center for medical humanities. The Georgetown-Howard Center for Medical Humanities and Health Justice will focus on reducing health disparities in Washington through leveraging methods of critical inquiry at the heart of the humanities.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Georgetown University honored Paula Fitzgerald, a nonprofit leader who’s expanded support for low-income immigrants in the metropolitan DC region, with the 2023 John Thompson Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award during a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center has opened a state-of-the-art Biocontainment Unit (BCU) that will be used primarily for observation and flexed for respiratory isolation and further flexed to care for patients with highly infectious diseases — including quarantinable diseases such as cholera, diphtheria, infectious tuberculosis, plague, smallpox, yellow fever, viral hemorrhagic fevers (such as Marburg, Ebola, and Crimean-Congo), and severe acute respiratory syndromes.

Sheehan Named Holder of Catholic Health Care Ethics Chair
Myles N. Sheehan
Myles N. Sheehan, SJ, MD, professor of medicine and director of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, has been named the holder of the David P. Lauler Chair in Catholic Health Care Ethics. A Jesuit priest and physician, Sheehan's interests in ethics include end of life care, care of older persons, spirituality in health care, and medical education. The GUMC Faculty Mentoring Program for New and Early Career Faculty is open for applications for a new cohort of 15 mentees and five pod leaders. Information sessions will take place January 24, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. and February 7, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. to share more about the program, what mentees can expect and qualifications needed to be a pod leader. The Disability Cultural Initiative is in the process of gauging interest in a Disability Employee Resource Group (ERG) to provide employees with opportunities for networking and community-building. The Massive Data Institute at the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy welcomes undergraduate and graduate students and early career professionals to join a virtual Green Space Data Challenge. Participants will have the month of February to demonstrate the value of green space data by creating analyses, visualizations, and new community indicators. Participants will access various data sources on our Redivis platform in individual or team notebooks to transform green space data into community indicators. Register here.
MedDent Flood Update
Here is an update as of January 21 on work in the MedDent Building following the burst pipe/flood over the holidays.

  • Work is now entering the remediation and restoration phase expected to last through March.
  • Repairs will begin with spaces where telework isn’t an easy option such as affected laboratories and some offices.
  • Inventory of damaged property nearly complete and work on replacing insured items is underway

If you have been directly affected by the flood and have questions, please contact Elliott Crooke for infrastructure matters or Mary Glasscock for administrative matters including reporting damaged equipment and requesting temporary office space.
