4 Questions Every Business Owner Should Ask About Their Insurance Coverage

Business can be unpredictable, but your insurance coverage shouldn’t be. Yet, far too often, business owners find themselves in the unenviable position of learning that an event they assumed would be covered is not. First, they ask “why?” then they ask, “why didn’t I know that?”
Personal Auto Insurance: Are Your Limits Enough?

“How much insurance do I need?”

This is one of the most common questions we as insurance agents get on a regular basis – and it comes with no easy answer. In fact, most of us avoid answering it completely. For example, in the event of a catastrophe, did we recommend coverage? How can we ensure our clients will be covered in an accident or other unforeseen event?
The Tree Care Industry and Errors & Omissions Insurance

A traumatic event occurred in Farragut Square on February 2, 2013. A local contractor was hired to cut down a dead ash tree on one side of the park but mistakenly chopped down a historic ginkgo tree. Not only was this tree at least 140 years old but it had also memorized in 2006 as part of the Park Service’s Witness Tree Protection Program.
Insurance Needs for General Contractors and Subcontractors

Bringing a construction project to life is a team effort. There’s usually a general contractor, who is responsible for the full management of the project, but there’s also a group of subcontractors, who perform the actual work itself. When it comes to insurance coverages for both parties, many of the same rules apply.
Get Familiar with Flood Insurance
By: Carolyn Paulochik, CIC

It’s a common misconception that you only need flood insurance if you own property in a flood-prone state like Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, or the Carolinas. But the truth is, floods can (and do) happen anywhere. Changing weather conditions in recent years have caused flooding in areas that have never had major issues with floods in the past.
Driverless Cars and Insurance: How Does It Work?

Driverless or self-driving cars might sound like something out of a science fiction novel. But the technology has already become a reality. In fact,  research and computer modeling  conducted by Accenture and the Stevens Institute of Technology projected that by the year 2035 nearly 23 million fully-autonomous vehicles will be travelling U.S. highways, out of the roughly 250 million total cars and trucks registered in the country.

What's Cooking?

Deanna’s Grilled Cauliflower Steaks with Tahini Mustard Sauce
For steaks:
  • 1 head of cauliflower
  • Olive oil
  • Steak seasoning
  • Salt
  • Pepper

For mustard sauce:
  • ½ cup tahini
  • 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard
  • 1 large clove of garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup of water
  • juice of one lemon
  • salt & pepper to taste

  • Clean the cauliflower and remove the outer leaves. Cut the stem short
  • With stem side down, slice the cauliflower into 1 to 1 and ½ inch slices to get 3 or 4 nice size steaks depending on the size of the cauliflower. (There will be some leftover florets from the ends – save these to add to a salad for your next lunch)
  • Season the steaks on both sides with olive oil, steak seasoning, salt and pepper
  • Place on a preheated grill and indirect heat
  • Grill for 7 - 10 minutes on each side over indirect heat
  • For sauce, whisk all the ingredients together until smooth – add more water for a thinner sauce

Alternate cooking method:
Place the steaks on a cookie sheet and roast in the oven at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, turning after 10 minutes. Brush half of the Tahini Mustard Sauce and continue roasting for about 10 minutes. You can also use garlic hummus as an alternative to the sauce, if you prefer. When steaks are done, drizzle with remaining sauce or hummus.
Rembo Chili
  • 5 Bacon Strips - diced
  • 1.5 lbs Ground Beef (90/10 sirloin is best)
  • 1.0 lbs Ground Italian sausage - out of casing (hot is best, but sweet Italian is good, too)
  • 1 large White Onion - diced
  • 4 cloves Garlic - diced 2 tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tbsp Oregano
  • 1 tbsp Ground Cumin 1 tbsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Crushed Red Pepper 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 14 oz can Diced Red Tomato 8 oz can Tomato Sauce
  • 4 oz can Diced Green Chilies
  • 2 can Pilsner Beer (12 oz Chicken Broth works for gluten-free)
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 1 tsp Vinegar
  • 2 x 15 oz cans of Kidney Beans Olive Oil

  • Dice 5 strips of bacon into fine pieces. I like to put on wax paper and freeze for easy chopping
  • Heat 2 tsp olive oil in your 4-quart or larger pot. Cook bacon bits until fat is rendered and it is slightly browned
  • Add sausage to bacon and cook until slightly browned
  • Add onion, garlic and spices. Cook approximately 5 minutes or until onions begin to soften
  •  Add ground beef and stir in with one of the beers. Crack the second beer for yourself because the hard parts are done
  • When beef is cooked, add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chilies, bay leaves and vinegar. Stir together and bring to boil for a few minutes
  • Lower heat and simmer for 30-minutes
  • Add beans, stir together, and simmer for another 30-minutes
