FOOTHILLS TU
A Message from our Chapter President

|
We will be holding our October meeting on Thursday the 8th at Fish Camp in Smithgall Woods State Park. This will be a chapter business meeting as discussion will be centered on our fund raising events such as the Hoot on the Hooch. We will also be discussing the changes being made to Trout Camp and Dream Trip ticket purchases. We will be wearing our masks and practicing social distancing to keep the risk of transmission of coronavirus at a minimum. As there will be no speaker and the meeting will be outdoors, I’d like to get the meeting started right around 6pm. If you need a little more time to get there please let me know and we’ll adjust as needed. The risks of Coronavirus remains and each of us needs to decide what is in our own best interests. We will have a raffle quilt again this year. I plan to have it at the meeting so we can include it in our discussions.
As announced, the tickets for the Dream Trip will be sold online this year. Each chapter is charged with selling a minimum of 150 tickets in order to receive the $500 rebate for all 2000 tickets being sold. You can purchase your tickets here:
Please be sure to select Georgia Foothills #629 as your chapter when making your purchases. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to participate also. This is the State Councils fund raiser and the major source of funds to operate Trout Camp each year.
I hope everyone is safe and well as the season changes over to fall.

Our goal is to sell 2,000 tickets = $20,000. If all the tickets are sold, each Chapter who sells a minimum of 150 will receive a $500 rebate. If each member in your chapter participates we will easily make our goal.

PAINTING BENEFIT AUCTION
Habitat Rabun
|
The painting is being auctioned off as part of Habitat Rabun’s Raise the Roof fundraiser. This year they are raising money to build a ADA compliant home for a lovely couple, Allison and Daniel. Allison was diagnosed with brain tumors in high school and subsequently had numerous surgeries to remove them. The surgeries left her wheelchair bound. Her fiancé, Daniel, works for the Rabun County sheriffs office. As an ADA home, the cost is significantly higher. Together, they and their families are working hard to help build this home.

PROJECT HEALING WATERS
Oakwood VA Clinic
|
The Project Healing Waters group meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month at the Oakwood VA Clinic (4175 Tanners Creek Drive, Flowery Branch, GA) at 9:30 AM. Right now, they are currently tying flies and building fly rods. As the weather warms and the rains hopefully fall, they will start offering some fishing opportunities. They have a great group and good time at their meetings. All Veterans are invited.
This program could not be offered to our Veterans without the support of the Foothills TU Chapter, the Gold Rush TU Chapter and Unicoi Outfitters. They have really began to grow in numbers and programs because of all of the hard work by the volunteers who are TU members.

FISHING REPORT
Cooler Air and DH Openings
|
If you're reading this report, that means you're still here and you still have to read my monthly fishing report drivel. It appears, at least for now, that those 90 degree days may be in the rear view for a while and we have a whole fall and winter season to be subjected to more pleasantries on the TV about COVID and politics. This could be a sign to just check out mentally for a while and hit the woods or water. Streams are cooler, browns will start feeding for their spawn, DH is open or opening soon and deer are moving.
It's early in the DH report season, but recent reports from NC are fish are there, but so are people, so hit those middle week sessions if you can. Start with the junk, but know these fish will see a ton a flies, so be prepared to downsize on flies and tippet. The GA season kicks off in less than a month, so get your practice in now.
The Hooch below Lanier is off color due to the lake turnover, but browns are feeding getting those calories in for the spawn and some big ones are starting to get a little more adventurous and willing to take a fly a bit better. You can get into some at a few key wading points, but look to get in a drift boat, pontoon or other floating apparatus to tangle with the big guys.

FLY OF THE MONTH
Guides Choice Hare's Ear
|
For those days when you can't decide on whether you should be swinging a soft hackle or hardcore nymphing, there is an answer. Some may say that this is just a dolled up Hare's Ear, but some say it catches fish. I like the latter folk. Rumor has it that this fly found it's place in the world through a portal somewhere near SW Montana. Honestly, I don't care where flies come from even if its from a dumpster as long as it catches fish. This is another one of those go to flies to keep stocked up in your box because they catch fish just about anywhere. Give it a go this upcoming season.
