Projected Top Players By Position
Roswell, Newton loaded at receiver
*Trey Blount, Pace Academy (6-2, 185):  Blount, who committed to Georgia in May, didn't make the AJC's first-team all-state team last year, which was controversial, but his numbers weren't remarkable considering his team played 15 games (13-2 record, Class AA title). He had 34 catches for 595 yards and nine touchdowns. But Pace didn't throw much. There could be little doubt of Blount's talents. He's a top-300 national recruit.

*Jayden Comma, Roswell (6-2, 205):  Comma had 44 catches for 1,049 yards and 13 touchdowns for Class AAAAAA runner-up Roswell. He's actually not the highest-rated WR recruit on his team. Mays transfer Corey Reed, only a little less accomplished as a high school player, is rated Georgia's No. 53 senior prospect. Comma is 54. It will be a pretty good receiver tandem. Comma's top three schools are Louisville, Maryland and West Virginia.

*Justin Gibbs, Grovetown (6-2, 195):  Gibbs caught 36 passes for 646 yards and seven touchdowns last season at Aquinas. He played only 11 games because of injury. He has about 20 offers and reportedly is a Mississippi State lean. Gibbs is one of three Division I prospects that came to Grovetown from Aquinas in the offseason. The others are RB T.J. Smith, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, and DB D'Angelo Durham.

*Justin Hall, Alexander (5-10, 170):   Hall is the leading returning receiver in the state. He had 86 receptions for 1,309 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Hall has almost 20 reported offers, mostly mid-majors, including Georgia Southern, Georgia State and Kennesaw State. He's viewed as an athlete and could end up in the secondary in college.

*Louis Hall, Woodstock (6-0, 180):  Hall had 1,067 yards receiving on 72 catches in only 10 games out of Region 5-AAAAAA. He had 12 touchdowns. He was second-team all-state, per the Georgia Sports Writers. Hall is a junior.

Holloman
*Jeremiah Holloman, Newton (6-2, 185):
Holloman is the top-rated wide-receiver recruit in the state. He's the consensus No. 23 receiver nationally. Holloman was good, but not great, as a junior in a balanced offense with lots of weapons. Holloman had 32 catches for 632 yards and seven touchdowns. Newton suddenly has another high-caliber wide receiver, Justin Marshall, who transferred from Salem. He's also a top-50 recruit in Georgia and probably gives Newton the best pair of receivers in Class AAAAAAA if not the state.

*Markese Jackson, East Hall (5-11, 170):  Jackson is an under-the-radar do-it-all player for the Vikings. In 2016, he had 65 catches for 1,056 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also played some quarterback and passed for 352 yards and rushed for 454. He had a hand in 14 touchdowns for a 6-5 team. He is being recruited by multiple Sun Belt Conference schools, "but I believe he will really take off once people follow up from the spring," said coach Bryan Gray.

*Josh Johnson, Woodward Academy (5-11, 175):  Johnson was a key offensive cog on Woodward Academy's AAAA semifinal team. He caught 51 passes for 1,111 yards and 11 touchdowns. He had a couple of 100-yard receiving games in the playoffs. Johnson is a top-100 state recruit who has more than 20 offers, mostly mid-major.

*Nick Singleton, Jones County (5-11, 185):  Singleton missed a couple of games to injury last year, so his numbers were off - 70 catches, 905 yards, four touchdowns. Consider that he had 76 catches for 1,226 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore. Colleges are waiting for news of his academics, but he's a major Division I talent.

*Chad Terrell, North Paulding (6-3, 205):  This is the school that produced NFL and former Georgia receiver Chris Conley. Terrell, a lttle bigger than Conley was, is rising in the recruiting ranks. He's the No. 42 college prospect in Georgia with offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina and others. In 2016, he caught 51 passes for 826 yards and 10 touchdowns for a 3-8 team. He had seven catches for 98 yards and a TD vs. Colquitt County in the playoffs.

Coming Friday: Offensive linemen
Preseason All-State Teams
Class AAAA
Trevor Lawrence, the quarterback and five-star recruit of defending champion Cartersville, heads ups the Class AAAA preseason all-state team. He's joined by teammate Trey Creamer, a cornerback.

Jefferson and Woodward Academy have the most preseason all-state members with three each.

Jefferson has 2,000-yard rusher Colby Wood, blue-chip OL Caleb Wilson and DT Dontae Wilson.

Woodward is paced by WR Josh Johnson (1,111 yards receiving last season), DB J.R. Pace and LB K.J. Phillips. Woodward QB Ryan Glover, who threw for 2,740 yards last season, would've been a good choice, too, but was passed over for Lawrence, the No. 1-rated college prospect among juniors in the nation.

The most highly regarded recruits on the list are Lawrence, Mary Persons DE Malik Herring (consensus No. 10 prospect in Georgia), Cairo LB Walter Grant (No. 34), Jefferson OT Chandler (No. 39) and Thomson CB Christian Tutt (No. 15 among juniors).

Mary Persons, Eastside and St. Pius have two players each on the team.

Something unusual is the absence of players from traditional powers Marist and Sandy Creek. Both are expected to be Top-10 teams again, though neither has obvious star power, yet.

List
A new day in AA
The best teams in most classifications are the familiar suspects. Not Class AA. Only 18 of the current 57 schools in AA have ever won GHSA titles, and only five have won them in the past 20 years. Two of the past three AA champions, Pace Academy and Lovett, moved to AAA along with power Greater Atlanta Christian. Jefferson, the 2012 champion, is long gone, now in AAAA. So is 2011 champ Calhoun, in AAA. Buford, which won its fourth consecutive AA title in 2010, is now a AAAAA school. Benedictine (2014 champion) is now the only football-playing private school in AA. How much has that opened things up in AA? It has been 10 years since any current AA school other than Benedictine has won a state championship in football. Here are the most recent state championships won by current AA teams, with total number of state titles in parentheses.

2014 - Benedictine
2006 - Dublin (4)
2002 - Screven County
2000 - Swainsboro
1997 - Washington County (3)
1995 - Elbert County
1995 - Josey
1994 - Brooks County
1990 - Pepperell
1988 - Thomasville (4)
1979 - Model (3)
1969 - Vidalia
1969 - Coosa (2)
1967 - Putnam County
1959 - Albany
1956 - Monticello (2)
1950 - Rockmart
1948 - Fitzgerald
Four Questions
GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.

Joshua Robinson,
Northwest Whitfield
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "Probably this past season as we limped through our fourth game with injuries and finished with a 2-2 record.
We fought back by having great character and hard work. We finished the year the No. 2 seed in our region. We played a well-coached and very skilled Grady team in the first round. We missed an extra point late in the game and lost, but it was the first home playoff game that Northwest had played in double-digit years." [Grady won 28-27.]

2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?  "There are two that I would want him to play for outside of myself. Dwayne Hatcher, the offensive coordinator at Chattahoochee High School, is the main reason I am coaching today. He is a great Christian and leader, and I would want my son to learn football and how to be a Christian in football from him. The other is Mike Falleur. Coach Falleur is who I coached under the majority of my life as a high school coach. He was great in all aspects and garnered everyone's respect. ALL of his programs have always been successful!" [Falleur, Northwest's coach from 2002 to 2010, is now head coach of his alma mater Fort Smith Northside High in Arkansas.]

3. What is your favorite saying/motto? "Simple: Do your job on every play, and in the end the scoreboard will be in our favor."

4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "I do not mind targeting calls on clear intent to injure a player. I do think the rules have changed too far and softened the defensive side of the football where you can't make a big hit on a receiver for fear of getting flagged and or ejected."

Random Stuff
Russell Wilson, but better
Bennett
The best quarterback that didn't make our list of the best 10, or even preseason all-state, is probably Pierce County's Stetson Bennett. Tony Franklin, the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee, agrees. He sent this message to Bennett recently: "If u want to be Russell Wilson but better,! let me coach u! I'll make u the best u could ever imagine!" Wilson, of course, is the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks. Bennett was 222-of-351 passing for 2,904 yards and 25 touchdowns last season for 7-4 Pierce County. He also rushed for 564 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. Bennett is a 4.0 student who scored 29 on the ACT.

The Wright stuff
Who says three-sport athletes are a thing of the past? C.J. Wright of Screven County is a special case. Wright was selected on GHSF Daily's preseason all-state team as a defensive lineman this week. He's a fullback and linebacker. He's also 52-7 in two years as a heavyweight wrestler. He was third in the state as a freshman and 33-1 as a sophomore but was upset in sectionals and didn't get to return to state. He won the Region 3-AA discuss (153-01) and shot put (47-06) last spring and was second at state in the shot (51-07).

And he can dunk a basketball
How many players have rushed for 1,000 yards, passed for 1,000 yards and had more than 100 tackles in one season? Not sure, but Model senior Kyler Eldridge came close last season at 927, 1,103 and 124, respectively. He also forced two fumbles and intercepted two passes at linebacker. And he punts. And is a catcher on the baseball team. And can dunk a basketball at barely 6 feet tall.  He has 4.5 speed (ran 4.53 at Georgia Tech camp). Eldridge has offers from Air Force, Kennesaw State and others.

Richmond Academy RB is a strong one
Weightlifting is not our specialty, but Richmond Academy has a running back that we'd like to call Pocket Hercules. He's 5 feet, 8 inches, 185 pounds, and he squats 525 pounds and cleans 305. His name is Adonijah Applebery. "Yes, that is pretty good," Richmond Academy coach Simon Rodriguez said. "It is more than most collegiate running backs. Derrick Henry from Alabama was 230-240 pounds, and his max in the weight room at Alabama was around the same."

Fun facts ...
Former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's brother, Caylin Newton, is an all-region quarterback at Grady. ... Former Heisman Trophy winner Frank Sinkwich's great grandson, Frank IV, is an all-region lineman at Athens Academy. ... Brunswick's Shawn Smith and Glynn Academy's Deejay Dallas are opposing quarterbacks on arch-rivals in Glynn County. They are cousins. ... Lakeside of DeKalb County has won 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 games the past five seasons. Druid Hills, also of DeKalb, has gone 4-6 each of the past six seasons. .

Trivia
Rookie linebacker Leonard Floyd, in camp with the Chicago Bears, was the first former Georgia high school player chosen in the 2016 NFL Draft. He went No. 9 overall. For which school was Floyd a unanimous first-team all-state pick in 2011? (Answer Friday)

Answer to Wednesday's question: Trent Thompson of Westover was the most recent Georgia high school player to finish as the consensus No. 1 recruit in the nation, in 2015. Robert Nkemdiche of Grayson was the No. 1 recruit in 2013.

Correction
The region that placed 10 players on Wednesday's preseason all-state team is 5-AAA, not 6-AAA. The region includes Westminster, Pace Academy and Cedar Grove, which placed three players each on the team, and Towers, which had one.
