Class 6A

Thomas Central 49, Woodward 28

Recap: Boosted by special teams, Thomas County Central took a 28-0 first-half lead. When Woodward Academy got within 14 points twice in the second half, Jaylen Johnson responded immediately to each, throwing TD passes of 57 yards to Tre-Von Pringle and 37 to Malachi Thomas. A sophomore, Johnson was 6-of-8 passing for 135 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards and two scores. Trey Brenton rushed for 154 yards. Kendarius “Dee” Reddick, a junior committed to Auburn, returned the opening kickoff 59 yards, setting up Central’s first score, and finished with 10 solo tackles. Walter Reddick had 2.5 sacks and blocked a punt that set up a 21-yard scoring drive for a 14-0 lead. Cameron Brooks had three sacks, and Thomas Central had 10 sacks as a team.

History: Thomas County Central won its sixth state title, first since 1997, and finished 15-0 with victories over eight top-10 teams, five from Class 6A and three away from home in the playoffs. Thomas Central moved to 27-1 in two seasons under coach Justin Rogers, tripling the victory total of the previous two seasons combined. Woodward Academy fell short in its first finals appearance since 1980.

Class 4A

Perry 38, Stockbridge 27

Recap: Perry won its first state championship in its 70th season. The game turned in the final two minutes of the first half, seconds after Stockbridge had taken a 14-10 lead. Rodarius Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff to the Perry 37 but was stripped of the ball, and Perry’s Gesha’nn Heard recovered it up field and ran 54 yards for a touchdown and a 17-14 lead. Perry would not trail again. Colter Ginn was 16-of-27 passing for 261 yards and targeted Dakari Anderson, a Cincinnati-committed wide receiver, seven times for 148 yards and a touchdown. Jerrell Pinckney had 3.5 tackles for losses, two sacks and a forced fumble. Cashious Williams had three tackles for losses. Stockbridge's Jayden Scott and Cobey Thompkins each rushed for more than 120 yards, and Thompkins passed for 155 yards and three touchdowns.

History: Perry’s 70-season wait for its first state championship is a state record, beating the 69 of Milton’s 2018 team. Stockbridge, in its 60th season, like Perry was playing in its first championship game. Perry, the runner-up in its region, defeated four straight top-10 opponents, all away from home, over the final four rounds. Stockbridge’s Scott finished with 2,472 yards and 39 touchdowns. He is committed to N.C. State. Perry’s Anderson finished with 1,261 receiving yards.

Class 2A

Pierce Co. 48, Rockmart 45 (3OT)

Recap: Caden McGatha scored on a 1-yard run in the third overtime after Pierce County held Rockmart to a field goal. It was McGatha’s 53rd carry, 244th rushing yard and fourth touchdown. McGatha also passed for 131 yards and two touchdowns and ran or passed on 61 of Pierce County’s 64 plays. Carson Sloan ran the other three plays for 10 yards and a touchdown, had three receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns and led the Bears’ defense with eight solo tackles and 3.5 sacks for 30 yards in losses. Neither team led by more than seven points, and each of the game’s 13 touchdowns tied the game or put one team ahead. Rockmart’s biggest misgiving was the failure to score after having a first-and-goal from the 7 with 4:05 left in the third quarter after Tristan Anderson’s 42-yard punt return and a Pierce County personal-foul penalty. But on second down from the 3, a bad snap resulted in a lost fumble 29 yards behind the line. Pierce County also blocked Rockmart’s 49-yard field goal attempt on the final play of regulation.

History: Pierce County, which opened in 1981, won its second title in four seasons. Pierce also won in overtime in 2020, beating Oconee County. Rockmart was denied what would have been its first championship since 1950. This was the 11th overtime game in finals history and the second three-overtime game after 2018 Bainbridge vs. Warner Robins. Caden McGatha’s 53 carries set a state record, although it’s uncertain who held the previous mark. It might have been Lashon Darby, who rushed 41 times for Cartersville’s winning 1991 team. McGatha is believed to have become the second player in state history, first since Troup’s Taeo Todd last season, to rush and pass for more than 2,000 yards in a season. McGatha finished unofficially with 2,155 rushing and 2,007 passing. The game featured four true lead changes, tying a state finals record held by seven others, but ironically, none occurred until overtime, when Rockmart took its first lead, 35-28. Scores that break ties, including the original 0-0, are not counted in this definition.

Class 5A-6A

Greenbrier 14,

Lithia Springs 6

Recap: Maggie Pangle, playing on an injured ankle, caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Kenzie Horton with 4:10 remaining, and Greenbrier added a safety on the final play of the game to defeat the defending champions. It was the first title for Greenbrier (19-1), which was eliminated from the playoffs by Lithia Springs the past two seasons. Lithia Springs was making its third consecutive appearance in the finals, including a runner-up finish in 2021. Horton gave Greenbrier a 6-0 lead with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Aaliyah Silver with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter, but Lithia Springs answered on the ensuing possession with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Rashyia Minnex-Moss to Jasmine McDowell. Horton completed 10 of 20 passes for 88 of Greenbrier’s 110 yards. Silver had four receptions for 33 yards, and Presley McDonald had three catches for 26 yards.

Please send all-region teams to GHSF Daily at [email protected]. We will publish any team that we receive. GHSF Daily encourages those selecting and providing all-region teams to include each player's year in school. All-region players who are recognized as underclassmen have a better chance of being recruited and getting recognition on preseason all-area or all-state teams in 2024.

Senior players needed for Global Ambassadors Bowl 2024 in Spain

From 2008-2019, a Team Stars & Stripes squad of high school seniors each spring chose to experience a fascinating foreign country as a team over a nine-day period. Global Travel is rolling again, and we are reaching out to players and coaches nationally as we build a solid team of committed, enthusiastic high school seniors not likely to receive a college football scholarship to join and play one more game – in Spain. The tour highlight will be a ‘friendly match’ against a Spanish Under-19 All-Star team. The tour will run Saturday, March 16, through Sunday, March 24, starting in Barcelona on the Mediterranean Sea and then heading to Madrid where the Bowl game will be played. Click here for the trip itinerary and inclusions, or for more information contact coach Greg Vandagriff at 678-877-6293 or via email by clicking here.
