We will publish on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only. You'll still get all the news we've been providing each week during the season; you'll just get it in three issues instead of five.

Last week: Beat Pacelli 28-17. David Dallas was 16-of-33 passing for 197 yards in his first game in a month. Danny Baird returned the second-half kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown and a 14-3 lead, and Christian Hanson returned a blocked punt 51 yards for a score and a 21-3 lead. Kingsland's Bill Forman wins in Week 12
Bill Forman of Kingsland won the 12th and final 2020 Predict the Winner contest by forecasting all 10 games correctly. His prize is an ASQB-LITE tailgate game provided by All-Star QB. Forman, an assistant coach at Camden County, tied for first with Rodney Beck of Flowery Branch and won on the first tiebreaker. Forman and Beck separated themselves with five upset winners. Those were East Coweta (chosen by 36.5 percent over Newnan), West Forsyth (chosen by 45.6 percent over Denmark), Creekside (43.5 percent over Woodward Academy), Perry (chosen by 49.6 percent over Baldwin) and Pierce County (chosen by 42.3 percent over Appling County). Those getting nine of 10 correct were Jeff Cole of Jefferson, Andrew Dasher of Braselton, Jamie Fox of Cataula, Reid Holbrook of Jefferson, Zack Howard of Athens, Dwight James of Houston, Gary Long of Flowery Branch, Kay McFarlin of Canton, Jolynn Miller of Cartersville, Klenton Mullins of Carrollton, Terry Norburg of Madison, Oscar Patterson of Kingsland, Dee Pinckney of Savannah, Will Smith of Commerce, Joseph Tassitano of Suwanee and Bradley Warren of Darien
Lighter schedules
With the regular season complete, a clearer picture of the impact of the pandemic has emerged. The average number of games played per team this season was 8.9. Of the 420 GHSA teams that suited up this season, 185 played full 10-game schedules. About 70 percent of GHSA teams played nine or 10 games. The season fell 456 games short of capacity, with capacity defined as every team playing 10 games. Below are the number of teams that played each number of possible games. The five teams that canceled their seasons entirely are not included.

Three forfeits cost
Laney playoff berth
Laney was forced to forfeit three games last week that will take the Wildcats out of the playoffs, replaced by Oglethorpe County, which will make its first playoff appearance since 1998. The Georgia High School Association cited Laney for undue influence and fined the school $1,000, according to the Augusta Chronicle, the first to report the news Saturday. Laney’s wins over Glenn Hills, Butler and Josey were overturned, leaving Laney with a 1-8 overall record, 1-6 region record. Oglethorpe County, ironically the only team that Laney officially defeated, makes the playoffs at 3-7, 3-4.

TCC names field
for ex-coach Pilcher
The field at Thomas County Central’s The Jackets’ Nest was named Friday in honor of Ed Pilcher, the coach who won five state championship games on that field in the 1990s. “I may have been the one driving the vehicle, but I sure as heck wasn’t the engine making it move,” said Pilcher, quoted in the Thomasville Times-Enterprise. “That was everyone else, all in their place and doing their part.”

Briefly ...
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee fell short in its bid to win a state championship in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association on Friday. Rabun Gap, a private boarding school near Clayton, lost 27-21 to Charlotte Christian in the Division I championship game. Rabun Gap tied the game 21-21 in the fourth quarter after trailing 21-7 at halftime but surrendered a touchdown in the final three minutes and was intercepted in Charlotte Christian territory in the final minute. Rabun Gap is led by first-year coach Joe Sturdivant, a former Parkview all-state player.

Today’s interviewee is Riverdale coach Rodney Hackney, whose team clinched Region 5-4A with a 34-0 victory over Luella last week. The title is Riverdale’s first since 1998. The victory was Hackney’s 100th as a head coach. Riverdale is 20-10 in three seasons under Hackney after a 1-9 finish the season before he arrived.

1. What does it mean for the team and community to get the region title? “It means the world to Riverdale’s players, parents, administration and alumni. It has been 22 years since we were able to claim the region title. After the victory on Thursday, I have been receiving celebratory calls, texts and social media posts all day. Actually, our receiver coach, Kerrick Cooper, attended Riverdale High School as a sophomore football player at the time of the last region title in 1998. The significance of this region title has had a major impact within the community.”

2. What would you like people to know about your team? “First, I want people outside of the area to know that Riverdale, Ga., is a football community much like Parkview, Brookwood and Valdosta. We are just a slightly smaller-scale version of those powerhouse programs. Mainly, because Clayton County can be considered a transient area sometimes, but the heart of the people in Riverdale are driven by its football team. We have six generational football players on my team – two of whom I have coached their fathers during my first stint as head football coach in 2001. Riverdale High School will always hold a special place in my heart because they gave me my first start as a head football coach/athletic director at 26 years old, and I was the youngest head coach in the state of Georgia at the time.”

3. You've won region titles now at two Clayton County schools [North Clayton being the other], and counting your first stint at Riverdale, you've had three experiences with reinvigorating a Clayton County program. Is there a formula to winning in Clayton that's a little different than other places that you've figured out, or is it the same everywhere? “Wow, that's a great question, and to be honest, it's just something special about Clayton County that allows me to excel. I have no magical formula to the madness. I started as assistant coach in 1996 under the Clayton County legend Jackie Green at Mount Zion High School – and we won two football region titles, one state runner-up in football, and also I won the first track state championship in Clayton County as the head boys track coach in 2000. I do feel like the people of Clayton County are more of the blue-collar, ‘hard-working’ type people, just like my father and mother were growing up in my house, so I am able to relate to their hard-working mentality. The people in Clayton County have to work very hard for whatever they get, which makes their children the same type of student-athletes on the athletic field, so I definitely think that's where part of the success comes from.”

4. What brought you back into coaching after three seasons as an athletic director? “Well, in 2014, I was burnt out from coaching. There were a number of reasons that caused me to explore other options. In 2013, my dad, my anchor/mentor passed away. So, I thought it was a good time to find a new passion. Unfortunately, boredom set in after three years of being just an athletic director, so I began searching for programs that peaked my interests. During that time, my son expressed interest in playing football and made it known that he wanted me to coach him in high school. Shortly after, my longtime assistant coach, Max Wiltz, called me regarding an upcoming Riverdale football coach opening. Max said, ‘We should look at going back to Riverdale where it all started for our careers and see if we can finish where we started.’ I also knew I was very close to receiving my 100th career coaching victory if things worked in my favor. With all the opportunities presented, there wasn’t a doubt that I would return as head coach where it all started, Riverdale High School.”

Fall Metro Atlanta recruiting fair to be held Dec. 1 and Dec. 8
The 2020 Fall Metro Atlanta College Football Recruiting Fair will be held at Riverdale High School on Tuesday, Dec. 1 (8 a.m.-3 p.m.) and Tuesday, Dec. 8 (8 a.m.-3 p.m.). Representatives from Division II, Division III, NAIA, junior colleges and prep schools from across the country will be there looking for football prospects from the classes of 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
