Philo climbs to No. 1 in passing

Aaron Philo, the reigning GHSA passing leader, is back on top of the GHSA’s passing leaderboard through five weeks.

The Prince Avenue Christian quarterback passed for 408 yards in a 58-18 victory over Eagle’s Landing Christian last week. That was his fifth career 400-yard passing game and boosted him into first place with his season total of 1,520.

If Philo maintains his 304-yard-per-game average through 15 games, he would finish with 13,886 career yards, 16 behind state record-holder Trevor Lawrence.

Prince Avenue is ranked No. 1 in Class A Division I and riding a 19-game winning streak.

The GHSA’s rushing leader is Monroe Area’s Darrion Manuel. The receiving leader is North Murray’s Judson Petty.

Landon Dolhancyk, McIntosh

Landon Dolhancyk, a 6-foot-5 senior wide receiver at McIntosh, is the scoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week. Dolhancyk is third in the state (all classes) in receiving yards with 550 yards on 32 catches for the Class 5A Chiefs, whose 4-1 start is their best since 2017. Last year, Dolhancyk was all-region and all-county in his first year playing football. He is committed to playing for the Naval Academy and has multiple offers to play football at the next level. He is also an all-region basketball player. “Landon Dolhancyk is constantly working on becoming a great wide receiver,” McIntosh head coach Derek Smith said. “He leads the team by example in the classroom [with a] 3.9 GPA, and the teachers and student body love him. He is a mismatch on the field and fun to watch.”

GHSF Daily, in conjunction with scoutSMART, will be announcing a football student-athlete of the week each Friday this season. The ideal candidate will be outstanding on the field and in the classroom. Please click here to send nominations to Diane Bloodworth.

Here is where Georgia teams stand in several national polls. The numbers on the left are this week's rankings; the numbers in parentheses are last week's rankings.

Today’s featured inductee is former Americus and Georgia Tech football linebacker Mackel Harris. Harris will be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Mackel Harris

Americus High School Graduate

Mackel Harris was the state’s fastest football player and the ringleader of Americus’ undefeated state championship teams in 1974 and 1975. A linebacker, Harris averaged 12 tackles per game as a senior on a defense that shut out a state-record 13 opponents in 14 games and held every Georgia opponent scoreless. The 1975 Americus team allowed only eight points for the historic season and defeated Dalton 34-0 for the championship. Harris was the 1975 AJC Class AA lineman of the year and was a two-time AJC first-team all-state pick (1974, 1975). At the 1976 Class AA track-and-field meet, Harris won the 100-yard dash (9.6 seconds) and the 200-yard dash (21.9 seconds) with the fastest times in any classification. Harris went on to Georgia Tech, where he was a four-year standout and part of Tech’s dynamic defensive duo with fellow linebacker and 2023 Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame inductee Lucius Sanford. As a freshman in 1976, Harris tallied 109 tackles and was the recipient of the Clint Castleberry Award, given to Tech’s rookie of the year. Harris finished his career with 390 tackles. Harris spent a brief time in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys before beginning a career at Life University School of Chiropractic Medicine. He is currently the school’s director of recruitment/multicultural affairs. In a 2007 AJC article, Harris was ranked the No. 9 Georgia high school player of all-time. In 1987, Harris made the AJC’s 20-year all-state team (1966-86).

Today’s interviewee is Brookwood junior place-kicker Caitlyn Soroka, whose 30-yard field goal with 23 seconds left was the game-winner in a 23-22 victory over Carver of Columbus last Friday. Soroka also made an onside kick that Brookwood recovered in the final two minutes leading up to her winning field goal. Entering Thursday night’s game against South Forsyth, Soroka was 8-of-8 on extra points and 2-for-2 on field goals this season. She made a 34-yard field goal against Collins Hill on Sept. 1. She kicked 12 extra points and one field goal in part-time duty last season. Click here to see all of Soroka's kicks from the Carver game.

Caitlyn Soroka, Brookwood place-kicker

1. You are the second female kicker at Brookwood. Who was the first, and did you ever meet and talk about your interest in playing for the team? How was adjusting to the team once you joined, along with having them adjust to you? “The first person was a girl named Ellie [Lacour] a couple of years ago. No, I haven’t talked to her at all. But yes, she and Sarah Fuller [the former Vanderbilt kicker who was the first woman to play a football game in the SEC] were both very inspiring, and I thought it was so cool what they were able to do. That’s partially why I decided to join the team, as well. Honestly, it is like having a family full of brothers. The only difference between everything is that where I change is

separate from them. Other than that, we’ve been able to bond really well. I’m very thankful for my teammates, coaches and family for supporting me along this way. They’ve given me every opportunity to accomplish what I have.”

2. You started off playing soccer before football. Obviously both sports translate with your kicking ability, but what sparked you to try football? “When I was 10, I went to the College Football Hall of Fame and I kicked my very first field goal with my dad. Honestly I grew up in a football household, so when Sarah Fuller and Ellie were out there doing their thing, playing football, I thought it was super cool. My friends told me since I played soccer I should try it too, so I just decided why not give it a shot. I still play club soccer, so for me it’s just about trying to balance the two and making sure I’m able to keep the two from interfering with each other.”

3. Are you planning on joining a college football or soccer team? If so, what are some schools you have in mind? “If either one opens up an opportunity for me, I would be so thankful for that. It is one of my dreams to play one of those sports in college. I want to stay closer to home, so a lot of them [her favorites] are major SEC schools. UGA is one of my dream schools, and some of my [soccer] teammates committed to KSU, Miami-Ohio, Berry College. Those all seem like great opportunities, as well.”

4. You mentioned you were inspired by Sarah Fuller. What is something about yourself you would want others behind you to look up to? What advice do you have for female athletes in general? “I hope that I can inspire females and show them that it really doesn’t matter how big, strong or what gender you are. What matters is that you go out there and prove yourself. My advice would be to not take any criticism from people. Just go out there and do what you know how to do to prove yourself.”

In recognition of the contribution the GHSA contest officials make to our member schools and student-athletes, the GHSA is starting a new program called “Officials Appreciation Week.” There will be a week in each GHSA sports season (fall, winter, spring) in which we request that schools hosting events during these designated weeks recognize the contest officials in some special manner (cookies, treats, thank you notes, etc.) to show your appreciation for their service.
