Petty sets record for receiving yards
There’s a new state record for most receiving yards in a game, and it belongs to Judson Petty, a North Murray wide receiver who would’ve had an outstanding game even without his 16 receptions for 360 yards and four touchdowns.

Petty also rushed for 42 yards and had 11 solo tackles. Petty shared the game heroics with his quarterback, Skyler Williams, who passed for 461 yards and scored the winning touchdown, a 5-yard run with 29 seconds left, in a 44-37 victory at Pickens.

It’s hard to beat a state record, though. The previous best was held by Decatur’s Terryon Robinson, who had 322 yards receiving in a 2011 game against Riverwood.

Petty is GHSF Daily’s state Player of the Week. The award, sponsored by Sports Turf, will be presented to him at his school this week.

Today’s featured inductee is former Georgia Tech and Brown High football star and longtime coach Pepper Rodgers. Rodgers will be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Pepper Rodgers
Brown High School Graduate
Pepper Rodgers excelled in football, track and baseball at Brown High School in Atlanta’s West End neighborhood. He was a two-time all-state quarterback who led the Rebels to the Class 2A championship in 1949. In a 41-13 upset win over Glynn Academy, Rogers completed 12 of 15 pass attempts for 214 yards and four touchdowns. Rogers was one of seven Brown seniors who signed with Georgia Tech. Rogers was the backup quarterback of Tech’s 1952 national championship team and went on to share the quarterback role as a senior on the 1953 Tech team. He was named MVP of the 1953 Sugar Bowl after throwing three touchdown passes and leading Tech to a victory over West Virginia. Rogers also was an exceptional place-kicker in high school and college. After graduating from Tech and playing under coach Bobby Dodd, Rodgers was a 12th-round NFL Draft pick in 1954 (293rd player overall). Rather than signing, Rodgers spent five years in the Air Force, then became a college coach. He is best known as the head coach at Kansas (1967-70), UCLA (1971-73) and Georgia Tech (1974-79). He also coached in the USFL (1984-85) with the Memphis Showboats. Rodgers was vice president of football operations at the NFL level with the Washington Redskins. Rodgers was inducted into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1970 and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Rodgers passed away on May 14, 2020, at age 88.
The statistics in Marist's game summary Monday were from last year's game with Pike Road. Here is a corrected version.

Class 6A
10. (10) Marist (1-1)
Last week: Beat Pike Road, Ala. 42-14. Joseph Pizzo rushed for a team-leading 79 yards on eight carries. Marist had 304 rushing yards with 12 ball carriers and completed only one pass, a 59-yard touchdown from Jack Euart to Brayden Lewis. Afton Mosley and Henry Hamilton had two sacks apiece. Next: Friday vs. Savannah Christian (2-0)
Have mercy
Grayson’s 83-0 victory over Eagle’s Landing is tied for the 12th-biggest blowout in GHSA history and is the biggest since 2017, when North Springs beat Cross Keys 88-0. All things considered, the most profound recent blowout was Miller County's 80-0 victory over Central of Talbotton last year. That game was called at halftime.

Today’s interviewee is Creekside coach Maurice Dixon, whose team defeated St. Peter’s Prep of New Jersey 34-15 last week in a game between nationally ranked teams. On Saturday, Creekside will play at Mater Dei in Orange County, Calif., near Los Angeles. Mater Dei is the consensus No. 1 team in the country.

Maurice Dixon, Creekside head coach
1. What happened in Saturday night's game? What were the key moments. “First of all, St. Peter’s has a really good team. They’re definitely bigger in person than we first expected. We were able to come out and establish our identity running the football. They responded by putting together some long drives. At halftime we were down by one because we were a little too aggressive. We were able to go in at halftime, settle everyone down and make some adjustments, and we took off from there. Offensively we got into a groove, and on defense they started flying around hitting people.” [Creekside trailed 15-14 at halftime and outscored St. Peter’s 20-0 in the second half.]

2. How did the opportunity to play Mater Dei come about, and why did you decide to take on this challenge? “So many people have asked me why would I take a game against the No. 1 team in the country. I always respond with ‘Why not?’ It’s an opportunity to expose Creekside and our community to the entire country. We were looking for a game last spring. We wanted to play a national team again. After a couple of games fell through, we were presented with this opportunity. I teach my kids to be fearless. I would’ve had a hard time looking in the face of my team and telling them I felt like this mountain was too high to climb.” [Joe Maimone of Prep Gridiron Logistics arranged the game.]

3. How did you raise money for the trip, and what's the itinerary in terms of when you leave, arrive, get back? Are there any fun non-football things on the schedule? “We did an online donation campaign, and the kids responded well. We had ‘Tribe Night’ at Hot Tuna in Tyrone. With the help of councilman Jaceey Sebastian [of the city of South Fulton], we also reached out to businesses in the Fairburn/South Fulton area for support, which we received. We’re flying out early Thursday morning. We will return Sunday morning. The first thing we will do when we get out there is go to the beach. The game isn’t till Saturday, so on Friday we will tour USC. Our mindset going into preparation for the trip is ‘it’s all about business,’ but we wanted to expose our team to some things they may not ever experience again.”

4. What should people look for in this year's Creekside team? What is outstanding about the team, and maybe what are some of the question marks? “This team has great senior leadership. We have 12 guys in the senior class with college offers, but more importantly they care about their legacy. We’ve come really close to achieving our goal of winning the 15th game. This senior class is trying to do everything right so they can break through and complete the mission. I feel like we’re ahead of schedule offensively more than we have been in the past. The growth of guys like Vinson Berry, Travis Terrell, Roderick McCrary and Shane Kelley make it tough on defenders because their versatility allows us to get them the ball in several different ways. I think the biggest question mark for us is depth, but I feel like that’s a question that a lot of teams have, so we will continue to work to develop young guys who will be able to help us on Friday nights.”
