GHSA mulls delaying playoffs

Bye week after third round allows for adjustment

The Georgia High School Association is considering postponing the football playoffs one week to accommodate schools that need to make up games because of Hurricane Helene, executive director Tim Scott said Monday morning. Scott said he hoped to have a decision by noon today.

“We’re looking into that and working on it right now, trying to figure out what we can do to support our schools and give them some relief,” Scott said. “It’s not just football. Don’t forget we’ve got girls flag football, softball, volleyball, cross country and cheerleading. We’re looking at all of it.”

Postponing the football playoffs is a practical option this season because of an unprecedented playoff bye week over Thanksgiving. The playoffs historically are five rounds in five weeks. This season, for the first time, there is an extra week built in between the third and fourth rounds. It is a schedule fluke associated with the availability of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which will stage the championship games Dec. 16-18.

The playoffs are scheduled to start Friday, Nov. 8, but could start Nov. 15 and finish on time.

The GHSA is still assessing how last week’s schedule played out. Postponements are still happening. At least four games scheduled for Monday night were called off Monday morning. The schedule damage is not easily compiled since the GHSA’s 415 football-playing schools can negotiate makeup games on their own and report scores later.

According to AJC/GHSF Daily research, only 15 of last week’s 170 games were played as scheduled Friday night, and 15 were played Wednesday to get ahead of the storm. A record 54 games were moved to Saturday, and another 34 were scheduled for Monday or Tuesday. Six were canceled and won’t be made up.

About 45 games are postponed beyond this week, and about 20 of those are postponed indefinitely. Indefinite postponements involve teams whose schools remain closed or that do not have common open dates. When that occurs, teams often are forced to play two games in one week, usually Monday and Saturday games, or face a forfeit.

Lingering school closings make matters worse. South Georgia schools that are closed this week include Lowndes, Valdosta, Clinch County, Cook, Brooks County, Fitzgerald, Lanier County, Berrien and Atkinson County. Irwin County returns Thursday. Tift County will be back Wednesday. In the Augusta area, Richmond County’s eight public schools and Columbia County’s five are closed this week.

Schools typically don’t allow their sports teams to play games when school is out, but Scott noted that school districts make those rules, not the GHSA.

Coffee, despite an indefinite school closure, was playing last week’s scheduled game Monday night against Northside, though the game was moved to Warner Robins because of storm damage to Coffee’s field. Goal posts are bent, and half the scoreboard has been blown off.

Coffee also plans to play Lee County in Leesburg on Friday night despite extensive storm damage through Coffee County.

Stanley Lott, who hosts a Coffee County sports radio show, said the county had no power and limited cell service Monday morning. He said 80% of homes in the county had wind or tree damage. That includes the home of Coffee coach Mike Coe, who posted a photo of his house that was struck by a tree.

“The team is meeting this morning (Monday) at the field house, and the players will be able to take cold showers there due to no hot water and no running water in most of Coffee County,” Lott said. “Coach Coe and his coaching staff have been going door to door of each player to inform them and to check on them. Lots of players’ family homes have trees down in their driveways and can’t get out. So, the coaches are taking them to the field house. Coach Coe is having every player to take extra clothes with them.”

Scott said Coffee’s situation is not uncommon.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those communities,” Scott said. “We’ll do the best we can to give those people some relief. Right now everybody needs to be thinking about helping those communities and keeping them safe.”

Dowdy’s breakout game lifts Bulldoggs

Winder-Barrow’s M.J. Dowdy has one scholarship offer, from South Florida. Others are waiting for the running back’s junior film.

The highlight reel got a boost Saturday, when Dowdy rushed for a school-record 347 yards and five touchdowns in a 57-43 victory over Habersham Central. Dowdy has rushed for 1,046 yards this season in six games. He was over 1,000 yards rushing as a sophomore, too.

“He is a powerful runner who runs behind his pads,” Winder-Barrow coach Robert Paxia said. “He has good vision and patience, which allows him to set up blockers.”

The victory improved Winder-Barrow 2-0 in region play for the first time since 2017. The Bulldoggs and Clarke Central, both 4-2 overall, are tied for first place. Winder-Barrow has never won a region championship.

Dowdy is GHF Daily’s Player of the Week. The award, sponsored by Sports Turf, will be presented to Dowdy at his school Wednesday.

They helped produce 347 total yards, 200 of it rushing, in a 35-23 victory over reigning Class 6A champion Thomas County Central. The Trojans ended Thomas Central’s 20-game winning streak and became the first team during that run to score five touchdowns against the Yellow Jackets. Lee County’s offensive line coaches are John Flath and Eric Tabor. The award, sponsored by Alfa Insurance, will be presented to the linemen at their school Wednesday.

Today’s interviewee is Woodstock coach Dan Devine, whose team defeated 20-point favorite Creekview 28-21 last week. Woodstock is 5-1, the Wolverines’ best start since 2000. They had lost 22 consecutive games when they hired Devine before the 2023 season. He had been West Forsyth’s defensive coordinator. Devine’s first Woodstock team was 2-8. Devine has been a Georgia head coach one other time, at North Springs, where his team was 6-5 in his lone season after finishing 1-9 the year before. Devine is from Yorktown, N.Y., and played college football at Gardner-Webb.

Dan Devine, Woodstock head coach

1. Tell us about the Creekview game. How was it won? “The Creekview game was a huge moment in our current season but also in our football history here at Woodstock. Having never beaten them in our history and this one being such a big region game, we were so proud of our players and coaches and their efforts on Saturday. With the hurricane and weather bumping it to Saturday, our players never wavered and gave great effort for four quarters. Our players have really responded all year and have been focused on each task at hand. By no means have we done anything yet, but we are proud of how far we’ve come thus far.”

2. What has the 5-1 start meant to the school? What's the reaction been like in the community? “The win not only was a big one in the region standings. I think it also shows that we can compete in it. We knew going in we would have to play a sound and mistake-free game, and our guys responded. The response from our administration, community and alumni has been amazing, with players and coaches from nearly a decade ago reaching out in support. Pretty awesome to see.”

 3. You inherited a Woodstock team that had lost 22 games in a row. What were the most important things that you and your staff did that have translated into a 5-1 record in less than two years? “I think when we got here, we realized the first thing the program needed was a culture shift. It needed to get back to old-school roots starting with the weight room and strength-and-conditioning program. Our administration was super supportive of that and made it an easy transition to get most of our guys in classes together to all be on the same page. The next thing was an on-the-field culture – learning how to practice, how to practice at the speed we wanted and following a structured practice environment. The in-game stuff is where it takes a little time – learning how to be in games at first, learning how to make crucial plays in big spots and learning how to finish games. That’s something that’s hard to duplicate in practice. So, in year one it was teaching all those things. Getting the two victories last year was big for morale, and heading into this year we knew we were talented. We just needed to put it all together.”

4. You're from New York, and you've had stops in between making it to Georgia. What brought you here? “We won back-to-back state championships in high school, so winning from a young age was there for me. I played college ball in North Carolina and pretty much stayed down south the rest of my career. I started my teaching and coaching career in the Charlotte area and made my way down to Georgia in 2012, where I started as the defensive coordinator at Alpharetta. In my opinion, Georgia is the best state for high school football in the country.”

Today’s featured inductee is former University of Tennessee and Dalton High star Bill Mayo. Mayo will be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 26 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Bill Mayo

Dalton High School Graduate

Bill Mayo was the AJC’s 1980 Class AAA Lineman of the Year who would become a four-year starter and consensus All-American at Tennessee. Dalton was 33-7 and played in a state final and semifinal in Mayo’s three seasons on varsity. He was a two-time first-team all-state player and was voted the state’s No. 1 college prospect as a 1980 senior in an Atlanta Constitution preseason survey of high school coaches. Dalton’s GACA Hall of Fame coach, Bill Chappell, called his 6-foot-4, 260-pound tackle “tremendously strong in the legs, which is what a lineman should be. He’s such a good blocker, he just overpowers people.” The AJC named Mayo as one of five offensive linemen on its 1987 GHSA all-integration team (1966-86). Georgia High School Football Daily in 2017 named Mayo the best player in Dalton history. At Tennessee, Mayo finished his career with more starts (44) than any player in school history. He was a two-time All-SEC player, the Touchdown Club of Atlanta’s 1984 SEC Lineman of the Year and a 1984 consensus All-American. After his playing days, Mayo returned to northwest Georgia and worked in the industrial gas business. He served as a community coach at Dalton middle and high schools, did radio broadcasts of Dalton varsity games and hosted the Dalton head coach’s TV show.

SMU’s Kobe Wilson is the ACC’s linebacker of the week after making seven tackles and returning an interception 82 yards for a touchdown in the Mustangs’ 42-16 victory over Florida State. For which 2019 Gwinnett County team did Wilson, as a first-team all-state player in Class 7A, help lead to a 12-2 finish and its first semifinal appearance in 15 years? (Answer Wednesday)

Answer to Monday’s question: North Cobb and North Cobb Christian are the undefeated teams that are the closest drive from each other. They are 1.6 miles apart, each off Old 41 Highway between Acworth and Kennesaw.
