Moultrie's Jerre Malone best in Week 10
Jerre Malone of Moultrie won GHSF Daily’s 10th weekly Predict the Winner contest, beating out more than 800 contestants. His prize is an ASQB-LITE tailgate game provided by All-Star QB. Malone entered a rare if not unprecedented perfect ballot as he not only picked all 10 games correctly but chose the game with the highest margin of victory (Grayson over Brookwood) and the smallest margin (Fitzgerald over Thomasville). Those tiebreaker picks allowed him to advance ahead of Stevie Sheffield of Moultrie and Scott Lee of Alpharetta, who also went 10-for-10 on their picks. They got ahead with their upset picks of Colquitt County over Lowndes (chosen by only 28.5 percent), Milton over Roswell (chosen by 40.1 percent) and Cherokee Bluff over Dawson County (41.4 percent).
GHSF Daily will select 10 games each week for a Predict the Winner contest, presented by ALL-STAR QB. Predictions must be submitted by 5 p.m. each Friday. Limit one entry per email address. Contest winners will be announced on Mondays at the start of each new contest. Click here to play

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:

1. Glynn Academy 7, Richmond Hill 5: Richmond Hill was denied in its first attempt to clinch the Region 2-6A title when it lost to 20-point underdog Glynn Academy. Jenkins County, which lost to the Bulldogs 50-16 last year, moved into a tie for third place in Region 3-A Public.

3. Colquitt County 40, Lowndes 10: Colquitt County clinched the 1-7A title with a convincing victory against then-No. 2 Lowndes, which was a three-point favorite. Since the start of the 2003 season, Lowndes has lost only three games by 30 points or more, and all three came against Colquitt (37-7 in 2013 and 40-6 in 2018 were the others).

4. Douglas County 41, Dalton 6: One of the state’s longest runs of consistent success ended when Dalton lost to 12-point favorite Douglas County. The loss assured that Dalton (1-6) will finish with a losing record, the Catamounts’ first since 1959 (not including the 2011 season, when four forfeits turned what would have been an 8-3 record into a 4-7 year).

5. Cherokee Bluff 28, Dawson County: Cherokee Bluff, a 3-year-old Hall County school that went 3-17 over its first two seasons, is 8-0 and in position to win its first region title after beating eight-point favorite Dawson County. The Bears can clinch their first title with a win this week against North Hall, which is tied with Cherokee Bluff for first place in 7-3A.

Worth noting: Chamblee is playing a non-region schedule and didn’t start its season until Oct. 9 because of DeKalb County’s COVID-19 protocols, but the Bulldogs are 4-1 for the first time since 2013 after a 21-0 win over 21-point favorite Liberty County, which turned the ball over nine times. … Hughes beat 14-point favorite Lovejoy 20-18, handing the Wildcats their first loss and taking their spot in the 6A top 10. Hughes, Lovejoy and Tucker are tied for second place in 4-6A with one region loss each, a game behind No. 4 Westlake. … Mary Persons beat six-point favorite Upson-Lee 22-17 to keep its playoff hopes alive in Region 2-3A. A loss would have all but ended any playoff hopes for Mary Persons, which reached at least the second round the past nine seasons. … Miller Grove beat four-point favorite Mays 13-7 for its first victory in the eight-game history of the series. With the loss, Mays was eliminated from the Region 6-4A playoff race and will miss the postseason for the first time since 2012. … Washington County moved into a tie for first place with Northeast and Dodge County in 3-2A with a 42-20 victory over four-point favorite Bleckley County, which was ranked No. 4 two weeks ago but has lost two consecutive games.

Today’s interviewee is Fitzgerald coach Tucker Pruitt, whose team defeated Thomasville 29-28 on Friday to clinch Region 1-2A. Fitzgerald also moved up to No. 1 in the Class 2A rankings after what was the team’s fifth victory over a top-10 team out of nine games, all wins. Pruitt is a former Fitzgerald player who became the school’s head coach in 2017.

Tucker Pruitt, Fitzgerald head coach
1. How did the Thomasville game play out, and what gave your team the edge? “It was back and forth all night long. We were down 28-21 in the fourth quarter and they intercepted a pass on the 1-yard line. We got a safety on the next play to make it 28-23 and scored on the following possession to make it 29-28 after failing to convert on the two-point conversion. That was the break we needed, and it was a huge momentum shift in the game. We didn’t play our best game. We lost the turnover battle 3-0, but I was really proud of the resiliency our kids showed to continue playing and find a way to win.”

2. The win clinched a region title. Why was that significant for the team? “First and foremost it was significant because it was one of our team goals this year to win the region. It’s also significant because it gives us home-field advantage in the playoffs, and we feel like the bracket is set up to where we should have an opportunity to make a deep playoff run.”

3. What would you want fans to know about your team? What's the team’s makeup, its identity? “We’ve got a bunch of great kids. We have a big senior class with 22 seniors, and those guys have been with us all four years now and they know how we do things. They have high expectations and work their butts off. They want to be special and want to win a championship.”

4. Fitzgerald has been a consistent winner for two decades and come close to state titles with three runner-up finishes this century. What might this team have that may give it a better shot of winning than some that have come before it? “I think it’s probably the fact that we have been battle-tested and been in a bunch of really close games and found a way to win. We beat Cairo by four, Jefferson County by two, Thomasville by one and Pierce by 10, but we scored a really late touchdown in that one, so it was a lot closer than that. We actually began that game by getting down 10-0 and had to come from behind. We have been ahead and we have been behind and our kids just keep fighting. We have found ways to win games even when we didn’t play our best football, and I think that’s what championship teams do, and if we want to win a championship, we are going to have to continue to do that.”
