Finals draw record paid attendance |
The football championships’ return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium drew a record paid attendance of 50,622 this week, far outpacing the 27,442 average total attendance from the previous four years at Georgia State’s Center Parc Stadium.
“Pleased but not surprised,” GHSA executive director Robin Hines said Thursday. “The move back to Mercedes-Benz Stadium was well-received. After all, it’s the world’s best venue. The games played on Monday-Wednesday worked well and placed a spotlight on our games throughout the country.”
Hines said the attendance numbers are not final as they do not include complimentary passes, which could add 5,000 or more to the total. The previous total attendance record was 47,922 for eight games in the final year of the Georgia Dome in 2016.
This year’s success proved the Monday-Wednesday schedule can work. The GHSA had played midweek finals once before, in 2018, the last time that Mercedes-Benz was the venue. Played over two days, those eight games drew 40,463.
The finals otherwise have been played on weekends since 2008, when the GHSA first went to neutral-site championships starting with the old Georgia Dome.
Mercedes-Benz is typically booked and more expensive on the weekend that the GHSA would normally use, but the success of the midweek games means they could become a tradition.
Also boosting attendance this season again were three flag football finals. Flag football was added to the championship schedule in 2020.

E. Laurens, E. Forsyth, Charlton make hires
East Laurens, East Forsyth and Charlton County this week became the first schools to announce new coaches in an offseason that has netted 35 GHSA openings so far.
East Laurens on Thursday hired former Baldwin coach Jesse Hicks to replace Bin Turner. Hicks is a 22-year head coach best known for his time at Baldwin, where he won three region titles and 110 games in two stints and was 6-5 last season.
East Forsyth promoted defensive coordinator Dustin Canon to replace Brian Allison, who retired after leading the 3-year-old program to its first playoff appearance this season. Canon has been on staffs at Forsyth Central and Effingham County and joined East Forsyth's staff in 2022.
Charlton County hired Godby (Fla.) coach DeMario Jones to replace Russ Murray. Jones has been at Godby for two seasons. He’s a former Valdosta State player who coached on Georgia staffs at Turner County and Valdosta.
GHSF Daily will maintain a list of openings and hires through the offseason that can be found on our website.

9 winning coaches to be honored at GACA Falcons Luncheon | |
GHSF Daily’s Improvement Tracker standings are final, and the nine winners will be presented with awards Feb. 6 at the GACA Falcons Luncheon in Macon. The Improvement Tracker, sponsored by Hudl, has been a weekly GHSF Daily feature since August. It ranked the top five teams and their head coaches in each classification based on their improvement in the computer Maxwell Ratings, but with some exclusions. Only teams with winning records qualified. Each team and coach must have made the playoffs and improved playoff seeding or state playoff finish from the previous year. The objective was to recognize not only the challenge of improving a team but also making it relevant on the state level. Congratulations to the nine winners – Matt Helmerich of Peachtree Ridge, Johnny T. White of Douglas County, Tommy Watson of Harris County, Carl Kearney of Spalding, Heath Webb of Lumpkin County, John Russ of Providence Christian, Cherard Freeman of Bryan County, Jason McEachin of Portal and Kirk Hoffman of Flint River Academy.

| The Georgia Elite Classic on Dec. 27-29 in Rome will televise the Seventh-Grade All-Star Game for the first time, and roster spots are still available. The game will be televised live on Friday, Dec. 29, at Barron Stadium at 9 a.m. on the Peachtree Sports Network. The Classic enters its 13th season and will feature five games, all on TV, and include more than 450 players across the state. Nominations can entered by clicking here. | | | |
Please send all-region teams to GHSF Daily at ghsfdaily@bellsouth.net. We will publish any team that we receive. GHSF Daily encourages those selecting and providing all-region teams to include each player's year in school. All-region players who are recognized as underclassmen have a better chance of being recruited and getting recognition on preseason all-area or all-state teams in 2024.
To see all of the teams that we have received, visit the 2023 All-Region Teams page on our website.

Senior players needed for Global Ambassadors Bowl 2024 in Spain
From 2008-2019, a Team Stars & Stripes squad of high school seniors each spring chose to experience a fascinating foreign country as a team over a nine-day period. Global Travel is rolling again, and we are reaching out to players and coaches nationally as we build a solid team of committed, enthusiastic high school seniors not likely to receive a college football scholarship to join and play one more game – in Spain. The tour highlight will be a ‘friendly match’ against a Spanish Under-19 All-Star team. The tour will run Saturday, March 16, through Sunday, March 24, starting in Barcelona on the Mediterranean Sea and then heading to Madrid where the Bowl game will be played. Click here for the trip itinerary and inclusions, or for more information contact coach Greg Vandagriff at 678-877-6293 or via email by clicking here.
