Nominations needed for weekly flag football award
GHSF Daily, in partnership with the Atlanta Falcons, will recognize flag football players of the week through the state finals in December. Flag football coaches should submit nominations to [email protected] as early as possible on preceding Sundays. Please ensure that your team’s coach is aware of this recognition.
Gibson tops 1,000 yards receiving
Rabun County junior Jaden Gibson became the state’s first player with more than 1,000 yards receiving this season when he logged his second 200-yard game last week in a 63-0 victory over Banks County.

Gibson had 11 receptions for 236 yards and two touchdowns against Banks. The main target of all-state quarterback Gunner Stockton, Gibson is on pace for 1,503 yards receiving for the regular season.

A state record also is within sight. In 2018, Warner Robins’ Marcayll Jones had 1,494 yards receiving in the regular season and 2,046 total, the most in state history.

GHSF Daily’s leaderboard will run each Friday through the regular season.

Jackson County coach Rich McWhorter can become the 14th coach in state history to win 300 games when his Panthers face Eastside tonight. McWhorter also can become Georgia's second 300-game winner who has coached a Pro Football Hall of Fame player in high school. Who was the Hall of Famer that McWhorter coached, and who is Georgia's only 300-game winner with a former player in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? (Answer Monday)

Answer to Thursday’s question: Camden County, in 2013, was the last school other than Lowndes or Colquitt County to win Region 1 in the highest classification.

Team of the Week: Ware County
The Ware County Gators, who defeated defending Class 5A champion Warner Robins 29-21 in a Region 1-5A game and ended the Demons’ 15-game winning streak, received their Georgia Team of the Week plaque Wednesday at their school. Ware County (senior players pictured above) can clinch its sixth region title in 10 years with a victory against Veterans on Oct. 29. The state Team of the Week award is sponsored by Siemens and World Electric.
Player of the Week: Will Taylor
Will Taylor, a junior wide receiver at Cambridge who had 10 receptions for 130 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-47 victory over Johns Creek in a Region 7-6A game, received his Georgia Player of the Week plaque Thursday at his school. Taylor (pictured with head coach Craig Bennett) also recovered an onside kick to help his team rally from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter. The Player of the Week award is sponsored by Sports Turf and AstroTurf.
Today’s interviewee is Carrollton coach Joey King talking about college recruiting. King took the Carrollton job this offseason after spending a season each on the staffs of Coastal Carolina and South Florida. King previously was head coach at Cartersville, where he won two state titles and developed several college players, including NFL quarterback Trevor Lawrence. This is the first in a series of Four Questions interviews that draw on the experiences of former college coaches who are now Georgia head coaches. King began addressing this topic by saying, “The biggest piece of advice that I would give to a high school player looking to be recruited would be to make yourself recruitable.” Below, King describes four ways to do that.

Carrollton coach Joey King, on recruiting
1. “Make the grades! Don't keep it close! EXCEL in the classroom! One of the things that I learned as a college coach is that there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of kids that are just as good as the next guy (I'm not talking five-star). If your grades are bad and another guy’s aren't, then a college coach will move on! They have to!”

2. “Allow coaches to find you and access your film. Yes, we could find you regardless, but make it easy for them. Set your social media profiles where a college coach can find you. Include your most recent HUDL link as a pinned hyperlink close to the top of your page. Include your first and last name (not just a nickname). Include your high school (there may be a bunch of John Smith's, but not many John Smith's at ABC High School).”

3. “Love ball and be of high character. It helps you as a recruit to communicate clearly and be a respectful person. Especially with NIL being new on the scene and the transfer portal being a thing, college coaches are looking to make an investment that will last. If you just love recruiting and don't love ball, college football will chew you up and spit you out, so make sure you are good people and that you love ball.”

4. “Keep all doors open and when you feel like you find a good fit, if you can commit, then commit. I recruited several guys that were looking for bigger and better and then didn't get it. When they came back to us, we were already full. Be clear and transparent in your communication, though. If you are not interested in a school for whatever reason, tell the coach. Ask for the same from a coach that is recruiting you. Ask them where you really stand with them, where you are on their board, etc. I always thought that was fair when a kid would ask. Not every coach will tell you the truth though!”

New sports fiction book geared toward teen athlete readers
Mike Tierney, a former longtime sports editor and writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, has drawn from his experiences as a basketball coach in the Decatur school system to write the sports teen fiction book "Perfect To A Fault" about a high school player who goes through an entire season without missing a shot. Mike now coaches at Notre Dame High in the Los Angeles area, where he briefly worked with Ziaire Williams, the No. 10 pick in the NBA draft. Order the book by clicking here.
