Stockbridge ousts two-time champion

Benedictine’s Danny Britt knows when he’s been beaten, and the coach gave Stockbridge the credit for ending his team’s 24-game winning streak and two-year reign as Class 4A champion last week in the semifinals.

“That was just a butt whooping,” Britt told the Savannah Morning News. “They just physically handed us tonight. ... They physically brought it to us.”

Stockbridge senior Jayden “Duke” Scott, an N.C. State commit that Stockbridge coach Thomas Clark called “the best running back in the state,” rushed for 310 yards in the 45-31 victory.

It sent the Tigers to a championship game for the first time since they started football in 1964 and avenged a 34-14 loss to Benedictine from the 2022 quarterfinals.

Stockbridge is GHSF Daily’s Team of the Week. The award, sponsored by BSN SPORTS and Titan Electric, will be presented to the team today at the school.

Class 7A

Walton vs. Milton

When, where: 7 p.m. Dec. 13, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

Records, rankings: Walton is 14-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 5-7A and No. 2; Milton is 12-2, the No. 1 seed from 6-7A and No. 10.

Last meeting: Milton won 52-17 in the 2021 Class 7A semifinals.

Things to know: This will be the first championship in the highest classification without a Gwinnett County or South Georgia team since 1985 (Warner Robins vs. Clarke Central). Walton is from Cobb County. Milton is from Fulton. Walton can win its first state title in history. Milton can win its second, first since 2018. Walton is on pace to set a state record for points scored by a team in the highest classification. Mill Creek set the record with 712 last season. Walton has scored 695. Walton can become the second team in state history, behind 2022 Hughes, to score at least 35 in every game. Jeremy Hecklinski, a senior committed to Wake Forest, has thrown for 3,711 yards and 48 touchdowns with three interceptions. Walton has two 1,000-yard rushers (Austin Williams, Makari Bodiford) and a 1,000-yard receiver (Cameran Loyd). Milton’s Luke Nickel, a junior committed to Miami, has thrown for 3,709 yards and 38 touchdowns with four interceptions. C.J. Wiley leads 7A in receiving yards with 1,428. Milton is less balanced, as the Eagles rush for only 119.1 yards per game. Both teams are rich with college prospects. Walton’s include Hecklinski, Bodiford (Memphis), TE Hunter Teal (Miami-Ohio), OL Daniel Calhoun (Georgia), LB Wendell Gregory (South Carolina), LB Ashton Woods (North Carolina) and WR/DB Jordan Bride (Navy), all seniors. Milton has Nickel, Wiley (20+ offers), WR Debron Gatling (Texas A&M), TE Ryan Ghea (Auburn), LB Jacorey Stewart (Kansas), DB Dylan Lewis (Tennessee) and DB Tyler Redmond (Tennessee). Most are juniors. Walton leads the series with Milton 14-6. They’ve been in the same region 16 times. They have one common opponent this season. North Cobb beat Milton 42-27 and lost to Walton 35-27 in Walton’s only game decided by less than 16 points.

Maxwell Ratings’ projected score: Walton 35, Milton 27

Class 6A

Woodward Acd. vs. Thomas Co. Cent.

When, where: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

Records, rankings: Woodward Academy is 12-2, the No. 1 seed from Region 3-6A and No. 10; Thomas County Central is 14-0, the No. 1 seed from 1-6A and No. 2.

Last meeting: Thomas County Central won 48-14 in the first round of the 2002 Class 4A playoffs.

Things to know: These teams won close games on the road last week to reach the finals for the first time in more than 20 years. Woodward Academy defeated previously unbeaten Douglas County 24-21 to advance to the final for the first time since 1980. The War Eagles trailed 14-0 early, scored the game’s next 24 points and held on. Thomas County Central held off Marist 13-7 to make the finals for the first time since 2002. The Yellow Jackets took a 13-0 first-half lead and turned back two Marist scoring opportunities in the second half. Both teams lean on defenses that rank among the top three in Class 6A. Thomas County Central allows a classification-best 8.3 points per game, while Woodward Academy is third at 11.3. Offensively, Thomas County Central outgains Woodward Academy by about 80 yards per game. Trey Brenton carries much of the load for the Yellow Jackets, with 1,565 yards and 20 touchdowns on 241 attempts. However, quarterback Jaylen Johnson is equally dangerous passing the ball, with 2,029 yards and 21 touchdowns. Head coach Justin Rogers is 26-1 with two region titles since taking over last year at a program that had had five consecutive non-winning seasons in Class 4A before his arrival. Woodward Academy gets about 57% of its offense from a passing game led by two 1,000-yard passers, Griffin Marshall with 1,188 yards and Landon Walker 1,127. Their top target is Wake Forest-committed wide receiver Ben Grice. Lucas Farrington leads the running game and needs 28 yards to reach 1,000 for the season. One of Woodward Academy’s two losses came against Marist, 17-10 on Sept. 8, but Woodward has since won 11 consecutive games.

Maxwell Ratings’ projected score: Thomas County Central 19, Woodward Academy 8

GHSF Daily each week will rank the top five teams and their head coaches in each classification based on their improvement in the computer Maxwell Ratings from previous seasons, but with some exclusions. Only teams with winning records will be listed. In the end, each team and coach must also make the playoffs and improve playoff seeding or state playoff finish from the previous year to qualify. The objective is to recognize not only improvement but also the challenge of making a struggling program relevant on the state level or taking a good program to the next level. After the season, GHSF Daily will present an award, sponsored by Hudl, to the nine coaches who lead their classifications. The recognition will take place at the GACA Falcons Luncheon on Feb. 6 in Macon.

The two finalists that started this season 0-2 were Bowdon and Stockbridge. Tuesday’s Trivia answer was incorrect. ... Taeo Todd, perhaps the only player in state history to rush and pass for 2,000 yards in a season, accomplished that feat at Troup last season. We had his school wrong in our Player of the Week story.

Today’s interviewee is Perry coach Kevin Smith, whose team defeated Starr’s Mill 28-24 in the Class 4A semifinals last week and will play Stockbridge for the championship on Tuesday. Perry, which started football in 1954, is in the finals for the first time. Smith became Perry’s coach in 2017. He led Perry to its first region title in 61 years in 2020 and its first 10-win season in 2021.

Kevin Smith, Perry head coach

1. What has making the state finals meant to the school and community? Who are some people you've heard from to congratulate you? “Reaching the state championship game has been a long time coming for the Perry community. They have lived in the shadows of other county schools winning and playing for numerous championships [particularly Warner Robins and Northside]. Argene Claxton, a longtime agriculture teacher who taught for 30-plus years, told us he had been waiting 40 years for the Panthers to play for a state championship. Board member and former head coach Dave Crockett and retired coach and our historian Dickey Erwin along with retired state representative Larry Walker and current senator Larry Walker III have all reached out. There have been so many – our superintendent, Mark Scott, assistant superintendent Dr. Ricky Rodgers and Dr. Chris Brown along with principal Del Martin and A.D. Dr. Arthur Billings, and my mentor, Conrad Nix, legendary coach at Northside High School, along with many former players coaches and friends. I am so grateful and humbled.”

2. You've had a couple of tight playoff victories. In the Starr's Mill game, what was the most important play or moment? “In the fourth quarter of the Starr’s Mill game, we were down four points. We just forced them to punt, and they pinned us on the 1-yard line. We had to overcome third-and-8 and third-and-9 a couple of times before Colter Ginn hit Kory Pettigrew for a 61-yard touchdown that gave us the lead for good. Our defense then had to overcome a couple of penalties that kept Starr’s Mill’s last drive alive. Starr’s Mill was deep in our territory, and Tavares Simmons, a senior cornerback, had two pass breakups and then came up to tackle their running back in the flats for a game-saving touchdown. We then ran out the clock.”

3. You've had some teams in recent years that might've gotten through to the final with a little more luck. What has been the difference in this year's team? “We had some good teams that were good enough to win it but couldn’t get it done. I have said from the offseason until now that this team is special. They are different than the teams in the past. They have a ‘get to’ mentality instead of ‘got to.’ They love each other and do not want to let each other down.”

4. What did you see in the Perry job, and who were the most important mentors that you've had? “Life-long dream to be a head football coach. I had been in the county for 24 years at the time [part of the 2006 and 2007 state championship teams at Northside; also coached at Houston County], and Perry always had athletes and had their own stadium. Houston County is a great place to raise a family, and my wife worked in the system. It was a perfect fit. For mentors, Larry Prather, position coach in high school, inspired me to be a coach. Rob Ridings, another high school coach, helped me get my first job. They both taught me work ethic, commitment and sacrifice. Coach Conrad Nix [who won 241 games in 24 seasons as Northside’s coach] had a major impact on me as a coach. He showed me the formula to build a state championship team. He taught me how to treat and care for people from coaches to players. He also taught me that football is a platform to build young men spiritually, mentally and physically.”

Georgia Elite Classic invitations

to be handed out at Showcase

This year's Georgia Elite Classic has left a few roster spots open for those who will attend the Georgia Elite Classic Showcase, which will be held this Sunday at Blessed Trinity High School. The Showcase, which will begin at 11 a.m., will allow players to partake in a number of drills and evaluations. Then, our coaches and On3's Rusty Mansell will hand out invitations to the December All-Star Games, which will be televised on the Peachtree Sports Network and streamed digitally on the Atlanta News First app and the NFHS Network. To register for the showcase for a chance to receive an official invite to the Georgia Elite Classic All-Star Games, please click here.

Please send all-region teams to GHSF Daily at [email protected]. We will publish any team that we receive. GHSF Daily encourages those selecting and providing all-region teams to include each player's year in school. All-region players who are recognized as underclassmen have a better chance of being recruited and getting recognition on preseason all-area or all-state teams in 2024.

Senior players needed for Global Ambassadors Bowl 2024 in Spain

From 2008-2019, a Team Stars & Stripes squad of high school seniors each spring chose to experience a fascinating foreign country as a team over a nine-day period. Global Travel is rolling again, and we are reaching out to players and coaches nationally as we build a solid team of committed, enthusiastic high school seniors not likely to receive a college football scholarship to join and play one more game – in Spain. The tour highlight will be a ‘friendly match’ against a Spanish Under-19 All-Star team. The tour will run Saturday, March 16, through Sunday, March 24, starting in Barcelona on the Mediterranean Sea and then heading to Madrid where the Bowl game will be played. Click here for the trip itinerary and inclusions, or for more information contact coach Greg Vandagriff at 678-877-6293 or via email by clicking here.
