Hall, Hardaway, Gibson rank No. 1
Gavin Hall of Hebron Christian, Sire Hardaway of Douglas County and Jaden Gibson of Rabun County are the GHSA’s leaders in rushing, passing and receiving through three weeks.

Hall, a junior quarterback, has rushed for 310, 110 and 360 yards in Hebron’s three games, all victories. He’s also passed for 354 yards passing.

Hardaway, also a junior quarterback, is the first passer with more than 1,000 yards. Douglas County is better known for its receivers, including Wake Forest commit Hilton Alexander, but Hardaway is getting noticed now as an accurate distributor. He’s completed 71.4% of his attempts.

“We really feel that his recruiting is going to pick up,” Douglas County coach Johnny White said. “He's a slender guy – 5-11, 160 – but he totally understands the game and thinks through every decision he makes.”

The GHSA’s leading receiver is Gibson, who also led in 2021, when he finished with 1,878 yards. The Georgia Southern pledge has 493 yards through three games, a little ahead of the 459 he had this time last season.

Ian Fisher, McIntosh
Ian Fisher, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound senior offensive lineman at McIntosh, is the scoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week. Fisher was a GHSF Daily preseason first-team all-state selection in Class 5A and is a two-time Fayette County Super 12 pick. “Ian exemplifies the meaning of student-athlete,” McIntosh head coach Derek Smith said. “He puts his teammates in the forefront and is the living example to his younger teammates.” Fisher has received multiple offers and has committed to play at Air Force.

GHSF Daily, in conjunction with scoutSMART, will be announcing a football student-athlete of the week each Friday this season. The ideal candidate will be outstanding on the field and in the classroom. Please click here to send nominations to Diane Bloodworth.
Today’s featured inductee is former Oakland Raider and Spencer graduate Otis Sistrunk. Sistrunk will be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 22 at the College Football Hall of Fame.

Otis Sistrunk
Spencer High School Graduate
Otis Sistrunk, best known as a star defensive end for outstanding Oakland Raiders teams of the 1970s, was a product of Spencer High, the predominant football power in the old Georgia Interscholastic Association that operated during segregation. At 6 feet, 4 inches, Sistrunk was an outstanding player for his Columbus high school in the 1960s but chose to enter the U.S. Marine Corps afterward. Sistrunk then played in two semi-pro leagues for the next five years and garnered three all-star selections. An NFL scout saw him in a 1971 all-star game and got him a tryout, and that’s how he joined the Raiders. He made the NFL all-rookie team in 1972 and the Pro Bowl in 1974 and started on the Raiders’ Super Bowl championship team for the 1976 season. After his pro career, Sistrunk returned to Georgia and worked in Fort Benning for 12 years. He now runs Cowan and Memorial Stadium on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in the state of Washington.
Today’s interviewee is Rusty Mansell, 247Sports recruiting analyst, color commentator for Peachtree TV’s Friday night football telecasts and co-chairman of the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame. Mansell will be in Watkinsville tonight commenting on the game between Jefferson and Oconee County.

Rusty Mansell,
247Sports recruiting analyst
1. What are you looking forward to seeing in the Jefferson-Oconee County game? “I picked this game because of two programs that have been very successful but have not had the opportunity to be on television as much as others. I am big on two factors – a great football atmosphere and players. This game was an easy choice for me. We locked this game in early.”

2. The best-known players on each side are probably Jefferson’s Sammy Brown and Oconee County’s Whit Weeks. What’s your assessment of them? “I think most will get their first look at both around the country on Friday night. Both are household names in the recruiting world, but not many have seen either play on live TV. I love the upside of both, I am very familiar with both families. Both players are really good kids, but they are really high-level football players. Sammy has the potential to finish as a top-five player in the country for the class of 2024. He checks every box as a prospect. Whit Weeks is big-time underrated. He did not do the camp circuit. He came to one MVP Camp to get a verified height and weight for his 247Sports profile, and he has let his tape do the talking for him. I will tell you this, he had committable offers when he made his decision, and that is what really matters at the end.” [Weeks is committed to LSU, where his brother West is a sophomore. Brown is uncommitted.]

3. A common question that we get at GHSF Daily but aren’t experts on the topic: Are players who don’t play for a marquee program, or those outside of metro Atlanta, underrated in recruiting services? “Ten years ago, I would have probably said yes. Nowadays, you take two players by example from tiny Schley County in Zayden Walker and Jalewis Solomon. Walker is a 2025 OLB, and he’s already a top-15 player in the country. I saw both at Georgia Elite Classic, and they held their own with anyone. There are so many opportunities for players now to compete against 'larger' or 'higher profile.’”

4. What Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame candidate (or more than one) did you come away thinking, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize how good he was,’ based on the process of learning about the candidates and voting? “I had heard the name before, but to hear so many people speak about Andy Johnson, the 1969 quarterback, I had to look at his stats. He had to be special, but hearing Buck Belue, Lynn Hunnicutt and others talk about him, I knew he was special.” [Johnson led Athens to a 1969 state championship and played eight seasons in the NFL with the Patriots. Hunnicutt, a Hall of Fame board member, was Mansell’s high school coach at Pepperell and a teammate of Johnson’s at Georgia.]

*New coach won.
Valdosta and Warner Robins, which play tonight at McConnell-Talbert Stadium, were the state’s most successful highest-classification schools from 1973, when both hired new coaches, until the mid-1990s. In fact, each lost exactly 38 games from 1973 through 1995. Who were their coaches? (Answer Monday)

Answer to Thursday’s question: Cartersville has won 78 of its past 79 regular-season games. The loss came against Cherokee in 2019.
Kick off your game day with the best sports flooring and turf in the industry. Designed to take a beating.

The Perry Panthers, who defeated then-No. 3 Jones County of Class 5A 42-14 for their fifth victory against a top-10 team in three seasons, received their Georgia Team of the Week plaque Wednesday at their school. Perry (players, coaches and administrators pictured above) had not beaten a team ranked No. 3 or higher since 1998. The state Team of the Week award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Titan Electric.
Player of the Week: Kameron Davis
Kameron Davis, a junior quarterback at Dougherty who had a hand in all five of his team’s touchdowns and produced a career-high 502 rushing and passing yards in a 33-30 victory over Stockbridge, received his Georgia Player of the Week plaque Wednesday at his school. Davis (pictured with head coach Johnny Gilbert) has led Dougherty to a 3-0 record and No. 9 ranking in Class 3A. The state Player of the Week award is sponsored by Sports Turf.
