Last week: Beat Parkview 47-7. Phil Mafah rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Jaden Smith had four receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown. Deyon Cannon was 8-of-10 passing for 127 yards. Jake Garcia, the Southern Cal-committed quarterback who transferred to Grayson last month, made his debut and was 4-of-11 passing for 179 yards and a touchdown. It was Parkview’s most-lopsided loss since 1984. Next: Friday at Brookwood (6-1)

2. (1) Lowndes (6-0)

Last week: Beat Tift County 17-13. Playing its first game in three weeks, Lowndes took its first and final lead with 5:37 left on a short TD run by QB Jacurri Brown, who was 8-of-15 passing for 201 yards and rushed for 90 yards on 15 carries. Jahiem James had three receptions for 107 yards. DL Leon Williams had three tackles for losses. Next: Friday at Colquitt County (5-0)

Last week: Beat Camden County 34-13. Xavier Williams was 10-of-16 passing for 140 yards and rushed for 159 yards, with touchdown runs of 59 and 71 yards. Next: Friday vs. Lowndes (6-0)

Last week: Beat Discovery 47-14. Norcross led 41-7 at halftime and ran up 350 total yards in 35 plays. Kaleb Jackson rushed for 98 yards on four carries. Next: Friday at Duluth (5-2)

8. (NR) Newnan (7-0)

Last week: Beat McEachern 46-27. Bryson Moss for the third game this season scored three touchdowns, his final two in the third quarter to stretch Newnan’s lead to 36-21. Michael Maginnis was 13-of-23 passing for 195 yards. Newnan coach Chip Walker got his 150th victory. Newnan is ranked for the first time since 2010. Next: Friday vs. Pebblebrook (6-2)

Last week: Beat Etowah 35-6. A.J. Swann was 14-of-22 passing for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Keith Adams Jr. rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Brady Bocherer had eight receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Next: Friday at Alpharetta (2-3)

Last week: Beat Shiloh 44-0. Victor Venn rushed for 72 yards on nine carries and scored three touchdowns. Buford led 34-0 at halftime and held Shiloh to 17 total yards for the game. Next: Friday at Lanier (4-2)

Last week: Beat Northside-Warner Robins 14-0. Amari Jones was 11-of-22 passing for 161 yards, rushed for a team-leading 54 yards and threw TD passes to Javonte Sherman (32 yards) and Chris Wolf (12 yards), accounting for the Wildcats’ touchdowns. Last week: Lost to Warner Robins 22-19. Ware fell short in its bid to become the third team in history to beat six ranked opponents in one regular season. Brandon Mills and Thomas Castellanos combined for 124 rushing yards on 23 carries, and Castellanos passed for 188 yards but was 11-of-34. Next: Nov. 13 vs. Veterans (4-3)

Drew Jones led the way with five tackles, a forced fumble and recovery, and a blocked extra point. Evan West hit a 38-yard field goal for a 38-28 lead in the fourth quarter, and Jones County held on. Solomon was 15-of-23 passing for 361 yards and five touchdowns. Kalik Evans rushed for 125 yards on 27 carries. Brandon Watkins had eight receptions for 209 yards. Last week: Beat Darlington 31-24. Gage Leonard scored on a 4-yard run with 47 seconds left to break a 24-24 tie. He had 181 yards from scrimmage on 18 touches. Christian Thomas passed for 227 yards. TRIVIA

Newnan coach Chip Walker got his 150th coaching victory Friday in his team’s 46-27 win over McEachern. Walker’s father, Rodney, had 300 wins in Georgia. What other three father-and-son duos have at least 150 victories apiece in Georgia? (Answer Tuesday)

PREDICT THE WINNER CONTEST

Tennessee's Ken Watkins best in Week 9

Ken Watkins of Nolensville, Tenn., won GHSF Daily’s eighth weekly Predict the Winner contest, beating out more than 800 contestants. His prize is an ASQB-LITE tailgate game provided by All-Star QB. Watkins became the third out-of-state champion in four weeks after Art Castner of Florida and Mark Crooks of South Carolina. Castner nearly won the title again. He and Watkins were among nine who picked all nine games correctly. They joined Phillip Johnson of Adairsville after the first tiebreaker. The canceled Blessed Trinity-Cartersville game knocked out Castner and Johnson, who counted on that as their closest game in the tiebreaker. When it was thrown out, Watkins emerged as the winner. Others who got all nine played games correct were Marlo Foreman of Dublin, Daniel Calhoun of Fitzgerald, Mike Woodard of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Richard Lunsford of Griffin. They got ahead with their upset pick of Collins Hill over North Gwinnett (chosen by only 17.4 percent). The other eight winners were the favorites.

Perplexing upsets

Savannah Country Day, an 18-point underdog, beat Aquinas 29-28 last week, knocking Aquinas from the ranks of the unbeaten. Several bigger underdogs have won this season, but many of those upsets have come to make more sense retrospectively as the season has played out. According to the computer Maxwell Ratings, here are the 14 upsets that have stood the test of time. That is, Maxwell would pick the upset winner to lose the rematch 70 percent of the time or more. Below are those 14, including SCD-Aquinas, with Maxwell’s projected score of the rematch and the percent chance of the favorite winning.

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:

1. Newton 28, Brookwood 16: Brookwood’s best start since 2005 got its first blemish when the Broncos (6-1) lost in their Region 4-7A opener against Newton, which was projected as a 26-point underdog by the computer Maxwell Ratings. Brookwood had won nine of the past 10 games in the series, although the teams hadn’t faced each other since 1997. Brookwood quarterback Dylan Lonergan was injured in the first half and did not return.

2. Habersham Central 36, Lanier 15: Habersham Central picked up its first victory in five all-time meetings with Lanier, another Gwinnett County upset victim that was favored by 26 points. The win put Habersham Central (4-4, 2-2) in third place in Region 8-6A and in strong position to earn its third playoff berth in 13 seasons. Lanier (4-2, 1-2) is tied for fourth.

3. Northeast 37, Bleckley County 34: Northeast is in the driver’s seat in 3-2A after knocking off 12-point favorite Bleckley, which was ranked No. 4 last week. The Raiders are the only remaining unbeaten team in region play and can win their first title since 2009 with a win against Dodge County this week and then another in either of its final two games.

4. Cambridge 21, Johns Creek 14: Johns Creek, which won the Region 7-6A title three of the past four seasons, lost its share of first place when it was upset by 10-point underdog Cambridge on Saturday. Cambridge had lost the last two meetings but leads the series 3-2. Johns Creek is a game behind region leader River Ridge, which it plays in two weeks.

5. Logjam in Region 6-5A: Four teams with one loss each sit atop the 6-5A standings after a pair of upsets on Friday. Jackson of Atlanta picked up its first victory of the season when it beat 11-point favorite Chapel Hill 24-21, and eight-point underdog Villa Rica won 30-27 against Lithia Springs, the projected region favorite, according to Maxwell. Chapel Hill and Villa Rica are both 3-1 in region play; New Manchester and Lithia Springs are 2-1.

Worth noting: Dade County beat 18-point favorite Chattooga 19-14 for its first victory in the series since 2013 and just its seventh in 29 all-time meetings. Dade County, in fifth place in 7-2A, kept alive its hopes for its first trip to the playoffs since 2015. … Hiram picked up its first win of the season and ended an eight-game losing streak that was the second-longest in school history when it beat 19-point favorite Cass 38-14. Cass has lost two of its last three games after starting 5-0. … Landmark Christian ended an 11-game losing streak that was tied for the longest in school history when it beat Heritage of Newnan 20-17 in a game that was seen as a toss-up by Maxwell. Heritage is 0-7 in its first season in the GHSA. … Newnan, an eight-point favorite, beat McEachern 46-27 to reach 7-0 for the first time since 2009, when it won its most recent region title, finished 13-1 and reached the state semifinals. McEachern’s five losses are its most since 2008. … Savannah Country Day scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 55 seconds to play to upset 18-point favorite Aquinas 29-28 in the teams’ 3-A Private opener. It was the first loss for Aquinas, which has won four region titles since 2013.

Ga. Elite Classic to play All-Star Games in Rome Dec. 18-20

Moving into the eighth year of All-Star matchups for high school and middle school players in the state, COVID-19 protocols will be in place as the Georgia Elite Classic will host three middle school games and two high school games on Dec. 18-20 (Friday-Sunday) in Rome at renowned Barron Stadium. The high school All-Star Games will be played on Sunday, Dec. 20, and feature the best freshmen in the state facing the top sophomores, as well as a game between top juniors and seniors. Rusty Mansell of 247Sports will pick the high school players and send out invites. High school players will report Friday afternoon, Dec. 18, and all players will stay in single rooms for two nights. FOUR QUESTIONS

Today’s interviewee is Northeast coach Jeremy Wiggins, whose team defeated fourth-ranked Bleckley County 37-34 in a Class 2A game Friday. The victory put Northeast in sole possession of first place in Region 3-2A and in the state rankings for the first time since 2002. Wiggins, in his third season as Northeast’s head coach, is an alumnus of the Macon school who became an All-America safety at Appalachian State. In 2018, Wiggins was named by GHSF Daily as the best football player in Northeast history.

1. What did the win mean to your team? “It was big for the program, and I think it was a confidence booster for the team. It was significant because it puts us in the driver’s seat to win the region.”

2. How did the game play out? What gave your team the edge? “We got off to a fast start on the offensive side of the ball with some big plays. We were able to control the game in the first half. We made a couple of mistakes in the third quarter that put them back in the game. Junior quarterback Travion Solomon was able to execute the two-minute drill to throw the game-winning touchdown caught by junior Dicey Hopkins to win the game. I think our athletic ability, speed and preparation with the two-minute drill gave us the edge to win the game.”

3. What persuaded you to come to your alma mater and coach in 2018? What did you see at Northeast? “Just the chance to give back to my community and try and build a football program to impact and help our student-athletes get to the next level. I saw needs, potential, and an opportunity to bring change.”

4. What have you and your staff done in your three seasons that you feel has made the biggest difference? “I think we’ve changed the culture by first building relationships with the kids, teaching core values of life and teaching them how to work hard to overcome adversity. As coaches, we want to make a difference in our players’ lives and be that role model for them.”

Fall Metro Atlanta recruiting fair to be held Dec. 1 and Dec. 8

The 2020 Fall Metro Atlanta College Football Recruiting Fair will be held at Riverdale High School on Tuesday, Dec. 1 (8 a.m.-3 p.m.) and Tuesday, Dec. 8 (8 a.m.-3 p.m.). Representatives from Division II, Division III, NAIA, junior colleges and prep schools from across the country will be there looking for football prospects from the classes of 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
