Cook forfeits five games, falls to 1-7

Cook’s football team lost an appeal to the GHSA on Friday over an ineligible player and must forfeit its first five victories, putting in jeopardy one of the state’s longest playoff streaks.

Cook, a south Georgia school in Region 1-2A, won its game Friday night against Dodge County 27-7, but that is now the Hornets’ lone victory. They are 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the region after forfeiting victories over Pelham, Brooks County, Sumter County, Berrien and Jeff Davis.

Cook hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2000. Only five schools have longer playoff streaks. They are Marist, Peach County, Eagle’s Landing Christian and Buford.

Cook has a feint chance of qualifying if it beats No. 7 Fitzgerald and Worth County in the final two regular-season games, but the path also would entail multiple other games not involving Cook to go the Hornets’ way.

Neither Cook nor the GHSA has stated the reason the player or players were ineligible. Typically they are transfer students who do not meet all transfer requirements.

Cook posted the results of the appeal on its Facebook page:

“Georgia High School Association informed Cook High School that allegations were brought against the school concerning GHSA By-law 1.72 (D) Following the coach, 1.11 Eligibility, and 2.27 Failure to follow stated procedures. The school filed an appeal with the Georgia High School Association and met with an appeal committee Friday morning in Thomaston, Ga. We received the decision of the appeal from GHSA this afternoon and the committee denied the appeal.

“Unfortunately, we will have to forfeit our five wins and pay $750 in fines. We will notify the administration of those five schools of this situation and they will now be awarded wins with our forfeiture. The administration of Cook High School deeply regrets that this situation has occurred for the student involved, the team, our school, and our community. We are dedicated to adhering to GHSA regulations and bylaws. We are committed to ensuring that eligibility policies and procedures are followed. We look forward to finishing our season strong and supporting our student-athletes and coaches throughout the rest of the season.”

Maci Strickland, Allatoona

Allatoona senior quarterback Maci Strickland is GHSF Daily’s Flag Football Player of the Week. Strickland passed for 1,123 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 187 yards and eight touchdowns to help her team to a 6-0 week to open the season. That included a 20-19 victory over defending Class 7A champion Blessed Trinity and a 20-0 win over Milton, the team that put Allatoona out of the playoffs in the 2022 semifinals. Allatoona also beat West Forsyth, North Cobb, North Paulding and Buford. Strickland is a fastpitch softball player committed to Liberty. “She has always had a strong arm, but in addition to that, her decision-making has improved as well as her ability to anticipate throwing windows and throw the ball accurately into tight spots,” Allatoona coach Jordan Davis said. “She also has enough speed to be a problem for defenses to have to account for. As a senior that has played the previous three seasons, she has played a lot of football and has a lot of experience and is a great leader for the team.”

What team is leading the state in points per game: Calvary Day, Colquitt County, Fellowship Christian, Prince Avenue Christian, Roswell or Walton? (Answer Tuesday)

Answer to Friday’s question: The only former AJC all-classification state players of the year to choose professional baseball first out of high school are Parkview's Jeff Francoeur (2001) and Southwest DeKalb's Quincy Carter (1995).

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:

1. Spencer 35, Northeast 34: Spencer pulled off the biggest upset of the week, according to the computer Maxwell Ratings, when it beat 35-point favorite Northeast to take sole possession of first place in Region 2-2A. Last year, Spencer was a 34-point underdog when it beat Northeast 14-13 and went on to win its first region championship since moving to the GHSA in 1968.

2. Dalton 28, Calhoun 21: Dalton, the most under-the-radar team in a loaded Region 7-5A, moved into sole possession of second place with a victory over then-No. 6 Calhoun, which was an eight-point favorite. Dalton had won just once in the past 12 games in the series. The Catamounts can claim their first region title since 2016 with a victory against No. 4 Cartersville this week.

3. LaGrange 42, Trinity Christian 14: LaGrange, a six-point underdog, handed Trinity Christian its first region loss and created a four-way tie for first place in eight-team Region 4-4A that includes these teams as well as Troup and Starr’s Mill. Troup, the defending region champ, will face Trinity Christian and LaGrange in the final two weeks of the regular season.

4. Upson-Lee 21, Peach County 20: Upson-Lee is 8-1 for the first time since 2003 and has reached eight wins for the first time since 2015 with a victory in a Region 2-3A game considered a toss-up by Maxwell. The Knights can win their first region title since 1993 if they finish the regular season with a victory this week against Mary Persons, which also would claim the title with a win.

5. Glascock County 59, GMC Prep 20: Glascock County, which played football from 1974 to 1979 and then restarted the program in 1990, is on the brink of reaching the playoffs for the first time after defeating four-point underdog GMC Prep to move into fourth place in Region 5-A Division II. The Panthers, 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the region, reached the four-win mark for just the fifth time in program history.

Worth noting: Campbell is in position to claim its first state playoff berth since 2017 and fifth in school history after a 41-14 victory over 12-point favorite Pebblebrook. The Spartans will be big underdogs in their final two games, against Carrollton and Westlake, but can wrap up fourth place if East Coweta wins either of its final two games. … Harris County, a 2-9 team a year ago, has sole possession of first place in Region 3-5A after defeating 3-point underdog Northgate 35-13. Barring an upset or two in the final two weeks of the regular season, the Tigers will win their first region championship since 2015. … Heritage (Conyers) ended a 22-game losing streak against teams from outside of Rockdale County when it defeated 13-point favorite Winder-Barrow 40-21. Heritage’s only other wins since 2020 had come against fellow Rockdale schools Rockdale County (three) and Salem (two). … John Milledge Academy of the GIAA extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 58 games with a 27-22 victory over one-point favorite First Presbyterian. This was John Milledge’s closest game during the streak, which began in 2019. … McEachern clinched its third region championship in five years with a 34-21 victory over three-point underdog North Paulding. The Indians started the season 0-4 under first-year coach Kareem Reid but have since won five straight, including three in Region 3-7A.

Grayson’s Dick Wilson wins Week 10

Dick Wilson of Grayson won GHSF Daily’s Predict the Winner contest. He will receive an apparel gift from Shuma Sports. Wilson was among four contestants who correctly predicted all 10 games, and he won on the first tiebreaker to beat out Tommy Howell of Gray, Noah Willoughby of Auburn, Ala., and Bill Walton of Carrollton. Two of the 10 games were upsets. Those were Kell over Greater Atlanta Christian (chosen by 46%) and Parkview over Newton (40%). Wilson was the second straight winner to hail from Grayson. Last week’s winner, Willie Banks, is also from the Gwinnett County town.

Play Week 11

GHSF Daily will select 10 games each week for the Predict the Winner contest, presented by Shuma Sports. Predictions must be submitted by 5 p.m. each Friday. Limit one entry per email address. Contest winners will be announced on Mondays at the start of each new contest and will receive an apparel prize from Shuma Sports. Click here to play.

Today’s interviewee is Spencer coach Joe Kegler, whose team defeated then-No. 2 Northeast 35-34 in overtime last week and moved into first place in Region 2-2A. Spencer trailed 25-0 in the second quarter and 28-7 at halftime and defeated Northeast as an underdog for the second straight season. Kegler has been a head coach for nine seasons in his hometown, spending three seasons apiece at Carver, Jordan and Spencer.

Joe Kegler, Spencer head coach

1. It must’ve been a good halftime speech. What did you communicate to your team when you were down three touchdowns? “The biggest message for the team was be who you are. We made so many mistakes the first half and put the defense in bad positions. I told the team just be who you are and let chips fall where they may.”

2. What was the single most important play of the game? “Gary Gaither to Demarcus Horne on third-and-24 from the 44-yard line was definitely the biggest play in the game. We were down 28-14 with about seven minutes to go. We called a choice concept to try and get at least half of the yards to make it fourth-and-manageable. We were able to 26 yards and keep the drive alive and score on the possession to make it a one-score ball game.” [Gaither passed for 275 yards ant two touchdowns. Horne had 10 receptions for 142 yards. C.J. Star and Dray Duncan each had two tackles for losses.]

3. Gaither was a preseason all-state pick. What is his skill set? “Gary is a very cerebral player. He’s a three-year starter who understands the offense and exactly what we are trying to do. He’s able to communicate what he sees as well as what he likes, which helps keep everyone on the same page.”

4. What has kept you in Columbus for your coaching career, and what is the most important thing you’ve learned since your first head coaching job at Carver in 2013“Columbus is home, and family is extremely important to me. Family being able to support the team and seeing them at the game is really important for me. The biggest thing I’ve learned is something I try to put back into our kids every day: Be who you are and love the ones who love you.”

Character Education Athletic Program: The Mike Jones Story

Looking to improve the character and discipline on your team? Former professional and All-American athlete Mike Jones is looking to save the lives and careers of our youth by sharing with them the mistakes he made that sidetracked his career. The Mike Jones Story is relatable for ANY athlete in ANY sport. Let us reinforce the same messages that I know you try to instill into your athletes daily. Character education saves lives, and that is a fact! Contact Terry White at 706-442-1337 or via email by clicking here for bookings, or visit the website by clicking here.
