Today’s featured inductee is former Spencer, Louisville and Cleveland Browns running back Ernie Green. Green will be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Ernie Green

Spencer High School Graduate

Ernie Green is remembered in the NFL as the fullback who opened holes for NFL legend Jim Brown, but Green, a Columbus, Ga., native, produced 5,240 yards from scrimmage in his own right – 3,204 rushing, 2,036 receiving – during a seven-year career with the Cleveland Browns. Green and Brown made up the Browns’ starting backfield for their NFL championship team in 1964. Green switched from halfback to fullback after Brown’s retirement and helped block for Leroy Kelly, another NFL Hall of Famer, leading to Green’s selection to Pro Bowls in 1966 and 1967. In high school, Green was a star in the Georgia Interscholastic Association and played for Spencer, the GIA’s greatest football program. Spencer won four GIA championships in Georgia’s segregated era, including one during Green’s junior season of 1956, when Spencer was undefeated. Green was a rare four-year starter for legendary GIA coach Odis Spencer. Green also was his school’s class president and a member of the National Honor Society. Green went on to play at the University of Louisville, one of the first historically white Southern schools to allow African American players. Green led Louisville in rushing twice. He also was the third baseman and the only African American on Louisville’s baseball team. Green has been inducted into Louisville’s Ring of Honor. After his football days, Green founded Ernie Green Industries, a Kettering, Ohio, company that opened 15 manufacturing plants in three countries.

Rome's John McClellan wins Week 5

John McClellan of Rome won GHSF Daily’s Predict the Winner contest last week. He will receive apparel gifts from Shuma Sports. McClellan, in his 25th season as the P.A. voice of the Rome Wolves, beat out more than 1,000 contestants in the first contest of the season in which no one correctly predicted all 10 games. McClellan went 9-1 and finished in a tie with Jim Finch, the GHSA's president and Monroe County Schools superintendent, and Josh Gardner of Baxley. McClellan won by a single point over Finch in the tiebreaker that picks the closest game among the 10. Gardner was the only one among the three to pick the biggest upset – Newton was chosen by only 15.9% to beat Westlake – but failed to choose East Coweta (picked by only 24.7%) over Lowndes. Other upsets among the 10 games were Rockmart (chosen by 44.3%) over Irwin County, Harlem (32.1%) over Aquinas and North Cobb (46.9%) over Northside of Warner Robins. The average contestant correctly picked only 5.07 of the 10.

Play Week 6

GHSF Daily will select 10 games each week for the Predict the Winner contest, presented by Shuma Sports. Predictions must be submitted by 5 p.m. each Friday. Limit one entry per email address. Contest winners will be announced on Mondays at the start of each new contest and will receive an apparel prize from Shuma Sports. Click here to play.

TRIVIA

Three former Baltimore or Indianapolis Colts centers are 2022 or 2023 inductees in the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame, all with multiple Pro Bowl appearances. Who are they? (Answer Tuesday)

Answer to Friday’s question: ACE Charter’s nickname is the Gryphons. A gryphon is a creature with a bird’s head (usually an eagle) and a lion’s body. According to ACE, the mascot “is symbolic of the dual nature of ACE as a charter school because charters are the very best combinations of both public and private school.”

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:

1. Newton 27, Westlake 12: Newton, projected as an 18-point underdog by the computer Maxwell Ratings, is 5-0 for the first time since 1950 after knocking off the seventh-ranked team in Class 7A. Thomas Jefferson, the GIAA Class A champion last season, fell to 0-4. … North Clayton is 2-0 in region play (4-4A) for the first time since 2015 after a 36-17 victory over 11-point favorite Fayette County. FOUR QUESTIONS

Today’s interviewee is North Clayton coach Cap Burnett, whose team is 4-1, matching its victory total from the previous four seasons combined. North Clayton has avenged three losses against teams that beat the Eagles by a combined 143-0 score last season. Burnett is a former North Clayton and University of Georgia player.

Cap Burnett, North Clayton head coach

1. You've beaten three teams now that beat you by a combined 143-0 last season. How do you explain that? “It’s really just the boys’ mentality. We talked about it a lot over the summer, about things that needed to change, the way you approach the game, how you face adversity, and they have been displaying that change in mentality and keeping that positivity. It’s not a knock on my kids, but after you struggle for so long, it gets to a point where it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. They understand that they control that. We can get ourselves out of the hole and find our way to the light. We’ve added some sophomores and freshmen to the team that are used to winning. They won the county championship. We’ve got some older kids who’ve been through a rough patch, and they’ve come together. There’s none of the ‘We’re better than you, y’all aren’t any good.’ It’s a team effort. Everybody knows it’s a collective. And my coaches, they’ve been coaching their butts off.”

2. What would you want people to know about your current team? “We have a hard-working group. I’m a younger coach, but I was brought up through old-school ways. The glitz and glamour is not our style. They take on my style. They’re really chippy, and they play hard and fast. We are young. We only have a few seniors. Our entire linebacker corps are freshmen and sophomores. Our defensive backs are freshmen and sophomores. Our backfield is freshmen and sophomores. Our quarterback is a freshman. There are a couple of juniors and seniors on the defensive line and on the offensive line.”

3. North Clayton has had some outstanding teams and great players over the years [such as D.J. Shockley and Burnett’s younger brother, Morgan, and another NFL player, Kyle Love], but that last decade has been a struggle. Are there challenges now that didn't exist when you were growing up or first started coaching here? “For today, I think it’s the way things are set up with the way people are moving. Back when I was there in school, a lot of people owned their own homes, and all the neighborhoods were established. Now, kids can go to this school or that school. It’s happening all over the state of Georgia with kids just transferring. I felt like if we were able to keep our kids at home in their community and get a group to stay, because our middle school puts out so much talent, it would turn around. And that’s what I’ve been able to do. Let’s be real. Great coaches have great players. So I’ve been able to keep this group together. I think it’s the start of a turnaround.”

4. This is your eighth season as North Clayton’s head coach. Why have you remained so long? “For one, North Clayton is not just a school to me. It’s a community. I’m not just representing myself and my school on Friday night but my community. I grew up in it. It’s close-knit and family-oriented, and one thing you don’t do is turn your back on your family. I always felt grateful to come back here. Coach Shockley [former North Clayton head coach Don Shockley] granted me that position to start my career. We coached a lot of guys that went on to college and the NFL. Love of my school and community is one reason that I didn’t leave. I felt like at some point it was going to turn around in our favor because I stayed true to the process and trusted in God, and now we are here. I still know we have so much room to get better, and our region, it’s tough, and it’s really fixing to take off. But I do know it’s turning around in our favor.”

In recognition of the contribution the GHSA contest officials make to our member schools and student-athletes, the GHSA is starting a new program called “Officials Appreciation Week.” There will be a week in each GHSA sports season (fall, winter, spring) in which we request that schools hosting events during these designated weeks recognize the contest officials in some special manner (cookies, treats, thank you notes, etc.) to show your appreciation for their service.
