1. (1) Collins Hill (7-0)

Last week: Beat Peachtree Ridge 63-0. Sam Horn passed for 279 yards and four touchdowns became Gwinnett County’s all-time passing yards leader with more than 7,800 yards. All-state WR Travis Hunter suffered a lower-leg injury that could keep him out six weeks. “We don’t think it’s a season-ending thing,” Collins Hill coach Lenny Gregory said. “From what we’re hearing, he’s going to be fine.” Next: Oct. 14 vs. North Gwinnett (3-4)

2. (2) Mill Creek (6-0)

Last week: Beat North Gwinnett 36-17. Mill Creek trailed 14-13 at halftime and took the lead on a safety by Jamal Anderson that triggered a 23-point third quarter. Caleb Downs (brother of former North Gwinnett and current North Carolina star WR Josh Downs) returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Hayden Clark was only 16-of-37 passing but for 279 yards. Donovan Journey had nine receptions for 138 yards and scored on a 51-yard run. Next: Oct. 15 vs. Mountain View (3-3)

Last week: Beat Alpharetta 55-27. Milton rushed for 342 yards and seven touchdowns as a team, and Devin Farrell was 12-of-15 passing for 156 yards and a touchdown, giving Milton 498 total yards. Top rushers were Jordan McDonald (105 yards), Farrell (93) and Scott Moskowitz (85). Owen Pauley returned a punt 72 yards. Next: Friday at Etowah (0-5)

Last week: Beat Alcovy 34-7. Lowndes limited Alcovy to 110 yards as Josh Pickett and W.C. Fulton had two tackles for losses each. Fulton had two sacks not counted in those. Jacurri Brown was 12-of-22 passing for 187 yards and four touchdowns, tying his career high. Next: Friday vs. Cedar Grove (4-1)

Last week: Beat Etowah 15-6. QB K.J. Smith, playing for injured starter Robbie Roper, was 13-of-18 passing for 103 yards and a touchdown. Roswell led 15-0 at halftime. Next: Friday at Cherokee (3-3)

Last week: Beat South Gwinnett 17-14. South Gwinnett scored on a 48-yard pass with 2:12 left, but Grayson recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock. Dylan Elder and Joseph Taylor together rushed for 133 yards on 21 carries, each scoring a touchdown. Next: Oct. 15 at Parkview (3-4)

Last week: Beat Habersham Central 58-0. Buford led 37-0 at halftime and held Habersham to 15 total yards. Ashton Daniels was 5-of-5 passing for 132 yards. Isaiah Bond scored touchdowns on two receptions (44, 51 yards) and a kickoff return (60 yards). Next: Oct. 15 vs. Shiloh (1-4)

2. (2) Lee County (6-1)

Last week: Beat North Miami Beach, Fla., 68-49. Freshman RB Ousmane Kromah rushed for 313 yards and three touchdowns. Chis Martin threw three TD passes. Willie Williams scored on a reception and a kickoff return. Lee County overcame five turnovers and 150 penalty yards. Next: Oct. 15 at Houston County (4-3)

3. (7) Hughes (5-1)

Last week: Beat Westlake 31-24. Hughes led 24-0 but needed a goal-line stop in the final seconds to earn its first victory in history over a top-three team. Prentiss Noland was 13-of-22 passing for 150 yards and three touchdowns, each to a different receiver. Terrance Love and Armani Tookes each had a TD reception and an interception. Tookes returned his 81 yards for a touchdown. Next: Friday vs. North Atlanta (4-2)

Last week: Beat South Effingham 56-21. T.J. Mitchell had three receptions, all for touchdowns, covering 162 yards. Jeffery Waye passed for 220 yards, and Sutton Ellis passed for 110. Brunswick had 389 yards and five TD passes as a team. Next: Friday at Statesboro (3-2)

6. (3) Westlake (4-2)

Last week: Lost to Hughes 31-24. Westlake trailed 24-0 in the third quarter but wasn’t beaten until an option play was stopped at the 1-yard line on its final drive. The loss was Westlake’s third in region play since 2014, covering 40 games. Next: Thursday at Morrow (1-4)

7. (8) Douglas County (6-0)

Last week: Beat Paulding County 36-20. LaTrelle Murrell rushed for 138 yards on 15 carries. Douglas County intercepted five passes, two by Myles Oliver, who also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Next: Friday at South Paulding (4-2)

8. (9) Rome (4-2)

Last week: Beat Dalton 49-6. Reece Fountain was 27-of-34 passing for 344 yards and a touchdown, and Bryson Hill scored four touchdowns while rushing for 62 yards on 11 carries. Martel Hight had 10 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. Next: Friday at East Paulding (1-4)

Last week: Beat Camden County 77-34. Warner Robins put up 675 total yards and scored its most points in a game since 1976. Christon Lane was 17-of-22 passing for 350 yards and four touchdowns. Cole Speer returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown for a 42-17 lead. Gage Leonard rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries. Lewis was 12-of-17 passing for 262 yards. Last week: Beat Southwest DeKalb 33-13. St. Pius led only 19-13 late in the third quarter when the Lions turned back a drive that reached the St. Pius 10-yard line, the key play a 10-yard sack by Shug Bentley and Jack Kelly. St. Pius was held to 202 yards but forced Southwest into 11-of-26 passing with three sacks. Next: Friday vs. Lithonia (0-5)

Last week: Beat Woodland-Cartersville 40-3. Justice Haynes rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns and threw a 31-yard pass. Evan Dickens scored two touchdowns rushing and one receiving. William Parton had three tackles for losses. Next: Friday vs. Calhoun (5-1)

Last week: Beat Perry 31-26. Perry had the ball at the 1-yard line in the final two minutes, but Spalding forced a 4-yard loss, then a fumble to seal the victory. Sophomore QB Curt Clark was 15-of-20 passing for 160 yards and rushed for 98 yards on 15 carries. Nazir Berry rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. Perry, then No. 3, is the highest-ranked opponent that Spalding has beaten. Spalding, 1-9 last season, is ranked for the first time since 2016. Next: Thursday vs. Rutland (1-5)

Travion Solomon was 17-of-27 passing for 209 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns and ran to convert a fourth-and-15 on the winning drive. Last week: Beat Eagle's Landing Christian 34-3. David Dallas was 14-of-23 passing for 228 yards. Dominick Cosper had 111 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns on 20 touches. Trinity intercepted three passes, two taken by Jimbo Batchelor, who also forced a fumble. Trinity had been 0-4 against ELCA. Next: Friday vs. Whitefield Academy (5-1)

Last week: Lost to Turner County 13-7. Turner County broke a 7-7 midway in the fourth quarter, and Charlton County failed to threaten seriously in its final two possessions. Next: Oct. 15 at Brooks County (3-2)

IN THE NEWS

GHSA committee backs 3.0 multiplier

The GHSA reclassification committee voted 14-5 Sunday to recommend a 3.0 out-of-zone multiplier that could move schools such as Carrollton, St. Pius and Woodward Academy into the highest classification beginning in 2022.

The multiplier requires approval today by the GHSA’s executive committee.

GHSF Daily projected last month that a 3.0 multiplier would put Carrollton, Valdosta, St. Pius and Woodward Academy in Class 7A, Cartersville, Rome, Blessed Trinity, Greater Atlanta Christian and Marist in 6A, Jefferson in 5A, Benedictine and Westminster in 4A and Bremen, Lovett and Riverside Military in 3A.

The estimates are based on 2019 out-of-zone percentages and the latest enrollment figures available, not the ones the GHSA will use to reclassify schools over the next two months.

“What we have proven over the last two years is that what we’ve done does not work,” GHSA president Glenn White told the AJC in this report. “And we’ve had domination by schools in our association, because they’re in certain classes, that did not work.”

The GHSA used a 2.0 multiplier on the current two-year cycle. The latest plan calls for no cap on the number of classifications a school can be moved up by the multiplier. Currently, there is a two-class limit along with the assurance that the multiplier can’t move a school into 7A, the highest class.

A 3.0 multiplier would work by counting out-of-zone students three times when determining the final enrollment numbers used to place a school into its classification.

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:

1. Turner County 13, Charlton County 7: A week after beating rival Clinch County to reach 5-0 for the first time since 2014, Charlton County lost to a Turner County team that was projected by the computer Maxwell Ratings as a 23-point underdog. Turner came into the game just 1-4 but has now won three straight in the series, including 53-7 last year.

2. Spalding 31, Perry 26: Spalding, a 1-9 team each of the past two seasons, reached the five-win mark for the first time since 2016 with a Region 4-4A victory over of 20-point favorite Perry, which was 4-0 and ranked No. 3. Spalding, which last won a region title in 2003, and Baldwin are the only remaining unbeaten teams in region play, and they will meet on Oct. 22.

3. Newnan 42, North Paulding 17: Newnan recorded the biggest upset of the week, according to Maxwell, when it beat 36-point favorite North Paulding. Newnan came in with a 1-3 record, having lost to Starr’s Mill, Sandy Creek and Harris County by a total of 19 points. North Paulding had been 3-1, including victories over South Paulding and Brookwood.

4. North Forsyth 30, West Forsyth 27: West Forsyth, which has been in and out of the Class 7A rankings this season, is back out after losing to a 29-point underdog in its Region 6 opener. It was North Forsyth’s second consecutive victory in the series after losing nine straight from 2011 to 2019. North Forsyth is tied for third place in the seven-team region.

5. Carrollton 40, South Paulding 13: Carrollton kept alive its hopes of defending its 5-6A title with a victory over 10-point underdog South Paulding. Carrollton was coming off a 45-27 loss to Rome, which had lost to South Paulding the previous week. All three teams are tied with Alexander for second place in the region, a game behind unbeaten Douglas County.

Worth noting: Carver (Atlanta) beat eight-point underdog Westminster 36-20 for its second consecutive win in the series. The Panthers had been 0-24 all-time against Georgia’s existing private schools until beating Westminster and losing to GAC last year. … Deerfield-Windsor won for just the fourth time since moving to the GHSA last season, beating 31-point favorite Savannah Country Day 37-36. Deerfield-Windsor was 2-8 last year and is 2-4 this season. Savannah Country Day won 42-32 in 2020. … Lumpkin County ended a 16-game losing streak in region play with a 32-30 victory over 17-point favorite Gilmer in a 7-3A game. The Indians, who beat St. Francis the previous week, are on a two-game winning streak for the first time since 2016. … Pace Academy, which had been 0-4 on the field (the Knights had a forfeit victory against McNair), beat 11-point favorite Lovett 17-14. Lovett also lost to South Atlanta the previous week, making this the first time the Lions have lost back-to-back region games in the same season since 2003. … Tucker, which had not been 0-5 since 1991, improved to 1-5 with a 28-3 victory over 11-point favorite North Atlanta. The win ultimately could be crucial in the Region 4-6A playoff race, where Westlake, Hughes and Lovejoy are likely to earn three of the four berths.

FOUR QUESTIONS

Today’s interviewee is Hughes coach Daniel Williams, whose team beat Westlake 31-24 last week in a Region 4-6A game between top-10 teams. The victory was Hughes’ first over a team ranked in the top three, and it endangers Westlake’s streak of seven region titles.

1. What did that victory mean for your team? “Getting that first region win is always good. Every game you win matters, and that’s the No. 1 deal. And of course, it’s Westlake, a crosstown rival. For my guys, it’s just the next game on the schedule. North Atlanta this week is just as important.” [Williams downplayed the rivalry part but added: “Football in south Fulton County doesn’t get enough notoriety. Three teams in the top 10, all in a 15-minute radius, all these players right here.” In addition to Hughes and Westlake, Creekside is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A.]

2. How did the game play out? What were the big plays? “The game played out as I expected. We came out and forced a couple of turnovers and got in the end zone three times in the first half and were up 24-0 in the third quarter. I told them at halftime 18 wasn’t enough and that 24 was still not enough. We knew Westlake wasn’t going to lay down. I wasn’t surprised at how the game changed. We were up 31-17 after the pick six [81 yards by Armani Tookes] with a minute and something left. They threw a post and scored quick. We punted with 58 seconds left. They were on our 12. They went option pitch to the boundary on their sideline. We had nothing but a mike linebacker on the option, and Mike Watson ran it down between the goal line and the 1 and made the tackle. 3. What do you feel gave your team the edge? “The kids wanted to win coming off the five-point loss last year. Practice was real loose last week. There wasn’t a lot of chatter or talking. It was ‘Coach, we got it. We understand the task at hand.’ Throughout the game, they never got too high or too low. We tell them every day that good and bad things are going to happen in a football game. It’s how you respond.”

4. You made the quarterfinals last year. How does this team stack up with that one? “I brought quite a bit of our team back. Maybe of the 22 on offense and defense, 16 or 17 starters return, so they’re seasoned. They know what it took to make the run last year. This year’s team is a senior-led group. Our seniors have been through the trials and tribulations and played a lot of good football games. We could be better this year. Last year, it was the blind leading each other through.” [Hughes hadn’t won a playoff game since 2016 until advancing two rounds last season.]

New sports fiction book geared toward teen athlete readers

Mike Tierney, a former longtime sports editor and writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, has drawn from his experiences as a basketball coach in the Decatur school system to write the sports teen fiction book "Perfect To A Fault" about a high school player who goes through an entire season without missing a shot.
