Eziomume leads North Cobb's surge

North Cobb began the season 0-2 with respectable losses to top-10 teams Westlake and Buford. Since then, the Warriors and David Eziomume have turned it on.

With Eziomume rushing for 205, 268 and 326 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns, North Cobb has won three straight, its latest victory against No. 8 Milton 42-27 last week.

As coaches like to say, Eziomume is going to Clemson for a reason. He’s 6 feet, 1 inch and 205 pounds, and he’s run a 10.84 100 meters and long-jumped 19 feet, 7 inches.

Eziomume is GHSF Daily’s Player of the Week. The award, sponsored by Sports Turf, will be presented to him Thursday at his school.

New network for high school sports

Sunday’s launch of Peachtree Sports Network could mean far more high school sports coverage on TV in the coming years.

The network, Gray Television’s newest sports broadcast channel, will debut Sunday on WPCH station 17.2 and on cable station channel 245 for Comcast and Spectrum users.

The channel will focus on live local programming and feature teams from multiple sports across the state. Those will include the College Park Skyhawks in basketball, the Atlanta Gladiators and Savannah Ghost Pirates in hockey, the Georgia Swarm in lacrosse and the Atlanta Hustle in ultimate frisbee.

The network is partnering with Score Atlanta to broadcast high school sports. The first live sporting event will be the Cartersville-Cass football game Oct. 6.

Score Atlanta president I.J. Rosenberg says he envisions additional non-live shows that discuss high school sports in addition to live coverage in sports beyond just football, especially GHSA championship events.

“There is an audience not just for live high school sporting events, but shows will feature everything from football to basketball to baseball to soccer and lacrosse,” Rosenberg said. “It will also be a chance to give visibility on the recruiting side to players in all sports, and not just the top players but those that need visibility to advance to the next step to play in college.”

Score has been broadcasting games on Peachtree TV for the past five years but will move to PSN to complete its 33-game schedule this year. Score is expected to announce a similar four-game basketball season opener that it plans to televise on the network.

The Peachtree Sports Network will begin in Atlanta but plans to air on Gray-owned over-the-air channels in Albany, Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah in the coming months.

Tift County coach to resign after season

Tift County football coach Noel Dean announced Monday that he will finish the season but won’t return as the Blue Devils’ coach.

Dean’s announcement comes less than a week after the Tift County school board placed superintendent Adam Hathaway and high school principal Chad Stone on administrative leave for unrelated reasons, according to the Tifton Gazette. Their suspensions came in a tense meeting during which community members expressed concern about the football team and Dean, whom Hathaway hired.

“I hope this announcement can bring an end to the drama and distractions that have enveloped our program in recent weeks, allowing our coaches and players to regain their singular focus on the task at hand for the remainder of the season,” Dean said Monday in a statement.

Dean, hired in 2021, is a member of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He won Michigan state titles in 2002, 2004 and 2009 at Lowell High.

Dean’s first Tift County team finished 6-5, a four-win improvement from the previous season, but Tift is 2-13 since.

Today’s featured inductee is former Northside of Atlanta and University of Georgia star Buzy Rosenberg. Rosenberg will be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 21 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Buzy Rosenberg

Northside (Atlanta) High School Graduate

As a three-year starter at Northside of Atlanta in the late 1960s, Buzy Rosenberg played wingback and defensive back under coach Wayman Creel. As a senior against Grady, Rosenberg ran for two touchdowns, returned an interception for a touchdown, returned a punt for a touchdown and passed for a touchdown. He helped lead Northside to a 25-5 record in his years as a starter and was named honorable mention all-state as a sophomore and junior and first-team all-state as a senior. Rosenberg often was compared to an earlier Northside star, quarterback Stan Gann, a 2022 Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame Inductee. Creel, who would become the state’s all-time leader in coaching victories, called Gann his greatest quarterback but Rosenberg his best two-way starter. Rosenberg went on to play at Georgia and was Associated Press first-team All-SEC in 1970 and 1971. Rosenberg, listed as 5 feet, 7 inches and 188 pounds as a senior, was a cornerback and one of the Bulldogs’ greatest return men in history. Against Oregon State in the 1971 season opener, Rosenberg returned five punts for a still-standing school record of 202 yards with touchdowns of 74 and 66 yards. Rosenberg led the Bulldogs in punt return yards for three seasons, and his career total of 946 yards ranks fourth in school history.

Colquitt County wide receiver Ny Carr decommitted from Georgia on Sunday, leaving the Bulldogs with one committed player from the AJC's Super 11. That would be the fewest Georgia Super 11 signees since 2004. Who is the one who remains committed? (Answer Wednesday)

Today’s interviewee is Douglas County coach Johnny White, whose team defeated defending Class 6A champion Hughes 30-27 last week to improve to 5-0. White was on Hughes’ staff before taking the Douglas County job in 2016. He’s 4-2 against his old team.

Johnny White, Douglas County head coach

1. What were the key moments of the Hughes game? “I do think the touchdown on the last drive was important [a 29-yard pass from Sire Hardaway to James Johnson]. I think some of the key plays of the game were created by Sire using his legs and scrambling for some key first downs. Also, the defense really played hard the second half, only giving up one touchdown. I think that was huge.”

2. What's different about Douglas County this season that would turn around losing 48-3 to Hughes to winning 30-27? “I think it's their ability to play hard for each other. This team is a very unselfish group of young men. They really love each other. The biggest difference between last year and this year is Sire Hardaway. Last year the score was 14-3 at the half and we lost Sire for the remainder of the game.”

3. What’s Sire’s skill set/makeup? “Sire Hardaway is an unbelievable football player. He’s very accurate as a passer [90-of-123 for 1,274 yards, 11 touchdowns]. He is a super smart young man [3.75 GPA and former ScoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week] and runs when needed. His development has been both on the field and off. On the field, he does a lot of work with our quarterback coach [Corky Gordon] and our offensive coordinator [Ken Quinn]. He runs our scramble drill better than anyone that I have coached. His understanding of our offense and each week’s game plan has given us a chance to be successful in every game this year. Off of the field Sire Hardaway is our leader. He is never too high or too low in any circumstance, and now he has spread that spirit to our entire team.”

4. James Johnson also had a big game, scoring three touchdowns, including the winning score. What kind of player is he? James is a junior and a three-year starter for us at Douglas County. James Johnson is special. In five games this year he has 859 total yards [106 rushing, 359 receiving, 115 on punt returns, 394 on kickoff returns, all on 42 touches]. He has 13 touchdowns and also plays defensive back for us and has 35 tackles and four pass breakups. He's one of the best players I've ever been blessed to coach.”
