GHSA places schools in regions

The Georgia High School Association placed its 457 member schools into regions for the 2024-26 academic years Thursday, pushing reclassification one big step closer to completion.

The GHSA approved the appeals of six schools to move out of Class 6A, which will be the highest classification, and into Class 5A. Winning those appeals were Arabia Mountain, Houston County, Kennesaw Mountain, New Manchester, Newnan and Shiloh.

Losing appeals to move out of the highest class were Alexander, Central Gwinnett, Chapel Hill, Effingham County, Grovetown, Heritage of Conyers and Rockdale County. Douglas County withdrew its appeal.

Other schools winning appeals to play in lower classes were Allatoona to 4A, Central of Macon to A Division I, Dalton to 4A, KIPP Atlanta to 2A, Richmond Academy to 3A, Savannah to A Division II, Shaw to 2A, Union Grove to 4A and Warner Robins to 4A. Eastside lost its appeal to get 4A.

The GHSA’s reclassification committee will meet Thursday to consider appeals from schools requesting a different region in the same class.

Here are the 56 regions that will go into effect next fall, pending the outcome of any appeals. Schools marked with an asterisk do not play football.

Slaughter, Philo, Souare at No. 1

Providence Christian’s Quinton Slaughter, Prince Avenue Christian’s Aaron Philo and Loganville’s Ahmed Souare finished the regular season as GHSA yardage leaders.

Slaughter, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior, rushed for 2,089 yards in 10 games. In 2022, he ran for only 302 yards on a team that won just two games. This season, Slaughter rushed for 389 in a single game, against playoff qualifier Union County on Oct. 13, and led the Storm to an 8-2 finish, best in Providence history.

Philo has led the state in passing the past two seasons, so his 3,131-yard effort is no surprise. He has a chance to pass for more than 4,500 yards for the third straight season. Philo was an AJC Super 11 preseason pick who is committed to Georgia Tech.

Souare, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound junior, is a rising prospect who burst on the scene this season after catching only seven passes in 2022. He finished this regular season with 65 receptions for 1,275 yards and 16 touchdowns. He went over 200 yards twice this season, most notably on Oct. 5, when he had 13 catches for 290 yards and four touchdowns against Clarke Central.

Reed Chandley, Cherokee

Reed Chandley, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior kicker/punter at Cherokee, is the scoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week. Chandley has a 3.4 GPA and was the leading scorer on his team with 44 points (17 extra points and nine field goals). He is president of First Priority and a Cherokee High School FCA leader, Interact Club member (food pantry), FCA Summer Camp counselor, Thrive Ministry volunteer at FBCW, youth soccer referee, youth leader at a local church and VBS counselor at Sixes UMC. “Reed is having an all-state caliber season for us,” Cherokee head coach Josh Shaw said. “In 25 years, I haven’t had a specialty player work harder at his craft than Reed.”

Class 6A will be the highest classification in 2024, and the enrollment difference from top to bottom will be stark. Brookwood, the largest school, has 3,880 students. Chapel Hill, the smallest, has 1,665. The current highest class, 7A, has 46 football teams, and only Buford, Carrollton and Kennesaw Mountain had fewer than 2,150 students in 2021. The new Class 6A will have 58 football-playing schools, so that widens the enrollment range. But the 3.0 multiplier widens it further. Three Douglas County schools – Douglas County, Alexander and Chapel Hill – will be in the highest class starting in 2024 despite fewer than2,000 students because of high out-of-zone numbers.
