Last week: Beat Jones County 51-13. Deyon Cannon, starting in place of Carlos Del Rio, was 14-of-19 passing for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Jamal Haynes had five receptions for 149 yards. Grayson led 37-13 at halftime. Del Rio, a Florida-committed quarterback who transferred from McEachern, posted on his Twitter that he is still waiting to have his eligibility approved by the GHSA. Last week: Beat Archer 35-21. Lowndes led 21-14 entering the fourth quarter, when Dominique Marshall caught TD passes from Jacurri Brown and Tristin Bohler. Brown rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries and was 11-of-22 passing for 163 yards. Jacques Hunter had three tackles for losses. Last week: Beat McEachern 35-7. AJC Super 11 player Barrett Carter scored on a 7-yard run for North Gwinnett’s opening score in the second quarter and returned an interception 79 yards for a score in the fourth. Carter also had 2.5 tackles for losses. Corbin Hood had three. Jayson Gilliom returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown in the first half. Next: Friday at Jones County (0-1)

Last week: Beat Carrollton 46-24. Sam Horn was 27-of-40 passing for 364 yards and three touchdowns, all to Travis Hunter, who had eight receptions for 185 yards. Hunter also had one of Collins Hill’s three interceptions. James Smith had two tackles for losses and forced a fumble as Collins Hill held Carrollton to 173 total yards, nearly half of that in the fourth quarter. Next: Friday vs. Sprayberry (0-1)

Last week: Beat Dacula 40-34. Alexander Diggs scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth overtime. Brookwood stopped Dacula’s fourth possession when Andrew Stewart forced a fumble. Dylan Lonergan was 28-of-43 passing for 433 yards and four touchdowns. Denylon Morrissett had 12 receptions for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Sam M’Bake had nine receptions for 116 yards. He threw TD passes of 56 yards to Tajh Sanders and 55 yards to Aalah Brown. Next: Friday at Tift County (0-1)

Last week: Beat Rockmart 28-21. Trailing 21-14 entering the fourth quarter, Rome scored twice to win. Caleb Ellard scored on a 13-yard run early in the final frame. Martel Hight intercepted a pass to set up the game-winner, a 4-yard run by E.J. Lackey with about six minutes left. Rockmart later lost a fumble at the Rome 29-yard line. Last week: Beat Harrison 27-17. In a rematch of the 2019 Class 6A title game, won by Harrison, Allatoona took a 27-10 lead with three minutes left on Jayden Ponder’s 58-yard run. Last week: Beat Morrow 42-0. Cartersville set the state record for consecutive regular-season wins, with 59, while putting up more than 400 yards of total offense in the first half. Stratton Tripp was 11-of-16 passing for 246 yards and three touchdowns. Devonte Ross had three receptions for 130 yards and scored on an 85-yard screen. Amarai Orr had three tackles for losses. Last week: Lost to Eagle's Landing Christian 14-0. Damari Alston rushed 22 times for 164 yards and had three receptions for 43 yards.Woodward missed a short field goal in the first quarter, lost a fumble at the ELCA 14-yard line in second, was intercepted at the ELCA 13 in the third quarter, turned the ball over on downs at the ELCA 13 in the fourth and gave up a touchdown on a long interception return in the final two minutes. Last week: Beat Cedar Shoals 10-3. Will Richardson rushed for 103 yards on 23 carries and scored on a 15-yard run with 3:25 left to break a 3-3 tie. Clarke’s Jairus Mack had three receptions for 131 yards, one a 65-yarder that set up the game-winning score. With Cedar Shoals at Clarke’s 5-yard line late in the first half, Renardo Faust intercepted a pass in the end zone. Last week: Beat Flowery Branch 38-28. St. Pius rushed for 398 yards and dominated time of possession 31:40 to 16:20. Jack Grahme rushed for 85 yards on 14 carries. St. Pius completed only one pass, but it went for a touchdown as Dennis O’Shea threw 32 yards to R.J. Brewster for a 16-0 lead in the second quarter. Joey Sanfilippo had two tackles for losses. Bleckley then made a four-down stop inside its 20-yard line to seal the win. Christian Newbern sparked the rally in the third quarter with a 60-yard interception return. Philip Massengale passed for 117 yards and rushed for 43, accounting for all but four yards of ELCA’s total offense. ELCA is the first team to shut out Woodward since 2007. Last week: Beat Trinity Christian 17-10. QB Palmer Bush scored on a 57-yard run, and Parker McCleary kicked a 47-yard field goal, but Athens Academy won this one with defense as neither team scored after halftime. Next: Sept. 18 vs. Commerce (1-0)

Last week: Beat Calvary Day 42-7. Brock Vandagriff was 17-of-26 passing for 246 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Landon Owens had 165 yards from scrimmage on 11 touches. Logan Johnson had four receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Last week: Beat Mount Pisgah Christian 45-14. Cooper Blauser had nine receptions for a school-record 229 yards and three touchdowns. Blauser also scored a touchdown and intercepted a pass. Last week: Beat Christian Heritage 43-21. Fellowship trailed 14-2 at halftime but outscored the Lions 41-7 from there. Murphy Reeves scored on runs of 52 and 57 yards. Winning streaks

Cartersville set a state record last week with its 59th consecutive victory in regular-season games. Cartersville defeated Morrow 42-0. The streak began in 2014, when Cartersville’s quarterback was a freshman, Trevor Lawrence. Cartersville’s last loss came against North Cobb. TRIVIA

SAYE IT AIN'T SO

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:

1. Macon County 21, Clinch County 19: Clinch County, projected as a 24-point favorite by the computer Maxwell Ratings, lost a regular-season game against a Class A school other than Irwin County for the first time since 2014 (Charlton County 23-19). Clinch is now 0-6 all-time against Macon County, although the teams hadn’t met since 1996.

2. Bulloch Academy 32, Savannah Country Day 2: Savannah Country Day, ranked No. 9 in Class A Private last week, was upset by a GISA school that was projected as a double-digit underdog. Bulloch Academy’s first-year coach is Steve Pennington, who has 205 career victories and led Statesboro to a state championship in 2005.

3. Class 4A top 10 goes 0-5: No. 9 Mays’ game against West Forsyth was projected by Maxwell as a tossup, but the Raiders lost 42-6. No. 10 North Oconee was a 10-point underdog against Oconee County but lost 27-7. No. 4 West Laurens (lost 27-19 vs. Bleckley County), No. 5 Flowery Branch (38-28 vs. St. Pius) and No. 6 Troup (28-14 vs. Harris County) had been projected to win.

4. Fannin County 24, Union County 20: Union County’s 16 consecutive season-opening victories, the state’s longest active streak, ended with a loss to a Fannin County team that was a 12-point underdog. Fannin County had lost six straight games in the series, including 33-14 last year, with only one of the games decided by fewer than 19 points.

5. Wheeler County 26, Telfair County 10: Wheeler County was the biggest underdog to win in Week 1, beating 37-point favorite Telfair County. It was a dramatic reversal from last season, when Telfair won 44-7. Wheeler County had lost six consecutive games in the series, all by at least 14 points, and scored just 19 points total in the past three meetings.

Worth noting: Armuchee broke a 10-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over five-point favorite Towns County in a battle of teams that finished 0-10 last season. Both are Class A Public schools, although Armuchee played in 2A in 2019. … Cass beat 15-point favorite Dawson County 23-7 for its first victory over a top-10 opponent since 1983. The game was the head coaching debut for Cass’s Steve Gates, formerly a Kell assistant. Dawson County was No. 10 in Class 3A last week. … Glascock County won a season-opening game for the first time since 2001 and recorded the largest margin of victory in program history when it beat the Georgia School for Innovation and the Classics 58-0. GSIC, playing its first GHSA season, is a charter school in Hephzibah that opened in 2015. … Lambert ended a school-record 16-game losing streak with a 34-9 victory over Campbell in Tommy Watson’s debut as head coach. Watson is a former Lowndes assistant and Upson-Lee head coach. Campbell has lost 20 straight. … Richmond Hill, coming off the first semifinal appearance in program history, continued the momentum with a 28-11 victory over 14-point favorite Camden County, ranked No. 6 in Class 7A last week.

PREDICT THE WINNER CONTEST

Travis Absher of VIdalia wins in Week 1

Travis Absher of Vidalia won GHSF Daily’s season-opening Predict the Winner contest, beating out 993 other contestants. His prize is an ASQB-LITE tailgate game provided by All-Star QB. Absher, the head of school at Robert Toombs Christian Academy, was one of 38 contestants who missed only one of the nine games. [The Mill Creek-Parkview game, which was canceled Tuesday, was thrown out.] In the first tiebreaker, Absher correctly predicted the game with the largest margin of victory – Calhoun’s 41-14 win over Dalton – which cut the field to nine. Absher and Hiram Rodriguez of Box Springs were the only remaining forecasters who also predicted the closest game – Valdosta’s 28-25 win over Warner Robins. The final tiebreaker - used for the first time in contest history - was the contestant who entered the contest the earliest. Other finalists were Roone Gable of Trion, Greg Gaines of Hartwell, Joseph Livingston of Baxley, David Robertson of Commerce, Kelly Scruggs of Dalton, Ty Sellers of Dalton, William Smith of Commerce and Wilcox County head coach Rob Stowe of Rochelle.

FOUR QUESTIONS

Today’s interviewee is Richmond Hill coach Matt LeZotte, whose team defeated then-Class 7A No. 6 Camden County 28-11 on Friday night in Kingsland. In 2019, LeZotte led Richmond Hill to its first region title since 1996 and first state semifinal in history.

1. What did this latest win mean for your team? “We have worked tirelessly for six years to change the culture at Richmond Hill. When we got here, they had opportunities to win but never expected the outcome to go their way. We have changed that mentality, and our guys don’t flinch. We are fortunate to have a group of guys that have played a lot of games, and I’m proud of the job our guys are doing. The last thing I said before the final buzzer to our guys on the sideline was, 'This is just another win,’ and we have lived by that mentality the last few years. We just want more opportunities to play more games this season.”

2. What won the day for you in the game? “The difference-maker in the game was our conditioning. We were able to physically compete at a high level after traveling on un-airconditioned buses 1.5 hours in 100-degree heat with hydration regulations, and our guys did not flinch (referenced earlier). Coach Tony LeZotte, my brother, does a tremendous job in our weight room preparing not just our football players but all of our athletes to compete at a high level for extended spells. Our coaches are purpose-driven in our practice planning on making sure our guys are constantly being pushed with tempo and reps. It makes a difference.”

3. How does this year's team compare to last year’s? “We lost a handful of starters off of last year’s team. The performance in 2019, both on and off the field, set the stage for our program to be successful this year. Talent will get your tail whooped, but talent with preparation gives you a chance to win some ball games. Our guys have not only played a lot of games, but they understand what it takes commitment-wise in order for us to be successful.”

4. How much further along is this team mentally because of the success of last year? What did last season do for the team? “Our teams success this year is a product of the offseason. We held our players accountable during the quarantine, and they showed up in shape and ready to roll in June. We have very few guys that have major college football offers, which I think is silly, and they’re preparing with a chip on their shoulder. With all the uncertainty, we were happy to get one in. Now we will be ready for round two this week. One-game seasons for everyone playing high school football right now.” [Richmond Hill plays at Ware County this week.]
