Homecoming 2023

UGA Athletics management has advised they are in the process of evaluating factors that will decide the 2023 Homecoming date. Anyone claiming to know the date is merely speculating. We know it will be either:

October 7 vs. Kentucky or November 4 vs. Mizzou

We will immediately notify RBAA members when UGA Athletics notifies the Redcoat staff of the date. We know this is uncharacteristically late for confirmation, but there are many Homecoming related components that remain in flux. Please be patient, and get ready to kick off our 50th Anniversary year!

Upcoming Pep Band Opportunities

The Alumni Pep Band will be playing for two events during the month of July. The events are:

Event: July 4 Peachtree Road Race

Where: Lenox Square (play for runners as they walk to their starting position)

Time: 5:30am

Event: July 29 Vow Renewal Reception for Redcoat Alumni Mike and Melissa Upchurch Gibson

Where: First United Methodist Church; Hapeville, GA

Time: 7:30pm (1 to 1 1/2 hours)

If you would like to play for one or both of these events or have any questions, please contact Brenda Floyd or Mark Perry.

Redcoat Alum is Co-Director of eurobrass

Kathryn Cheney is co-director of the German non-profit organization "eurobrass--music that goes beyond." Kathryn played trumpet in the Redcoat Band 1999-2002 and was a Battle Hymn soloist 2000-02. She graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance and received her Masters in Trumpet Performance from Ithaca College in 2005.

Kathryn joined the eurobrass ensemble, a 12-piece professional chamber ensemble, on tour in Germany in the summer of 2012. In 2017 she moved to Germany to join the eurobrass leadership team. She now lives in Botzingen, in southwest Germany's Kaiserstuhl region. The eurobrass ensemble is the flagship of the non-profit organization. In addition to the annual concert tour, the nonprofit offers leadership for brass choir rehearsals and workshops, creative worship services, and instrumental performances in church services and concerts. Through these and other related activities, eurobrass works year-round to support German brass players seeking to serve God and their local churches through music.

For the first time since 2011, this summer's eurobrass tour will be in the United States. Many of the performance venues for their free concerts will be in the southeastern part of the country, including four concerts in the state of Georgia. To see an itinerary showing where they will be playing and/or to find out more about eurobrass and the ensemble, click here.

RBAA at the National Association of Alumni Bands Symposium in Cincinnati

Danny Roberson, Linda Butts and Lee Butts attended the NAoAB Symposium at the University of Cincinnati last week on behalf of RBAA. In addition to UGA, alumni bands were represented from the Universities of Cincinnati, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Pittsburgh, So Carolina, Texas, Washington, plus Clemson, FSU, Michigan St, W Virginia Univ and four other schools.

The two-and-a-half days of sessions yielded an incredible collaboration of ideas on a wide variety of topics, including Name, Image, Likeness (NIL), Band Director/Alumni Relations (panel of three college band directors), Adapting When Times Get Tough, Tech Tips, Developing a Leadership Pipeline, Preserving History, Handling Big Events, and a session led by Linda and Lee “Branding, Trademarks, and Merchandise". NAoAB will continue to conduct quarterly webinars on additional topics, and all are welcome to attend. Please contact the RBAA through [email protected] for information.

D-Day 80th Anniversary Opportunity (June 1-11, 2024)

For those alumni interested in travel and playing in a band at the commemoration of an historic event (trip not organized by the RBAA), the D-Day 80th Anniversary Collegiate Mass Band will feature outstanding collegiate marching band students and collegiate band alumni, and will perform at the D-Day 80th anniversary commemorative events in France, June 2024.

Participants will join one of four region bands (Southeast, Northeast, Southwest, or Northwest). Each region band will have the opportunity to perform separately, and will also combine to form a mass band for designated events. The experience starts in Washington D.C. for rehearsals and sightseeing before departing for the coast of France. Participants will perform for official ceremonies and parades marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the Liberation of Europe. The experience culminates with a stay in Paris.

While no audition is required, a sample of each registrant's playing will be needed for section placements. For more information: D-Day 80th Anniversary Mass Band
