Georgia Tech's HC Brent Key's Press Conference

Week 5 Bye Week

>>"We've got to get it together...And, as a coaching staff, everyone's got to start becoming accountable to things like this...We did not execute," Key said. "And, when I say execute, we didn't cover the guys."

>>"I'll play freshmen and develop freshmen," Key insisted. "All right. But, we also have to adjust things schematically when you have guys down. We can't continue to do the same things, expect things differently. So. injuries are part of the game. That's part of the game."

>>"I acknowledge what our record is. There's no one more upset than me in the building. The reality is, we're 1-3...We've got to control turnovers...penalties. It looked like a group of 11 independent contractors on the field at one time....>>>>

>>"I'd be pissed as hell at the head coach if I was out there in the stands. A lot of the things that happened are self-inflicted.

>>"I do believe I've put my finger on some very large things that have to change or be removed."

Hot-Hand Bennour Leads No. 24 Yellow Jackets Into Tough ACC Road Stand

>>Coming off a flawless conference-opening weekend on The Flats, Georgia Tech (10–3, 2–0 ACC) is shifting focus to a demanding 4-match road swing. The gauntlet kicks off Friday against Duke before transitioning to a top-25 showdown with No. 24 North Carolina Sunday.

>>Propelling Tech's momentum is freshman right side hitter Alida Bennour, who was named the ACC Freshman of the Week for the second time on Monday. The Algerian standout was unstoppable during sweeps of Virginia Tech and Virginia, matching her career high with 21 kills against the Cavaliers posting a blistering .559 attack percentage.

>>Against the Hokies, Laura Bieleski led the Jackets’ offense and earned her third career double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.

>>Her .600 attack percentage was also good enough for a new career high while her three blocks tied her career high.

>>Zoe Humphrey proved to be one of the most well-rounded players on the court on Friday as she finished Friday’s match with an exceptional .900 attack percentage, a career high mark, with nine kills on 10 swings as well as eight total blocks.

>>That success will be tested immediately. O'Keefe Gymnasium has treated the Jackets well during an undefeated 6–0 home stretch, but true conference positioning is carved out on the road. For Collier, surviving the grueling ACC schedule lies in pushing past early accolades. "I believe pursuing excellence teaches us something about ourselves that comfort never will," Collier noted. "Evolve instead of becoming comfortable."

>>Friday's match at Duke is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will stream live on ACCNX. They then head to #25 North Carolina. That one is Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on ACCN.

Despite 1-3 start, Brent Key Still Believes He Made The Right Coordinator Hires This Offseason

>>Georgia Tech is 1-3 to start this season and there is not a lot of good that can be said about how they are playing entering their bye week. The Jackets have taken a huge drop on offense, and the defense remains inept.

>>Brent Key is hard at work to try and get things turned around this season and talked about that at length in his press conference on Tuesday. "I stood before the team this morning and had a long meeting and spoke the same way, but also the reality of things have to change. Things have to be corrected because a lot of things have happened are self-inflicted. We're not playing together, for each other. We're not playing for Georgia Tech, and that'll change. That will change."

>>One of the criticisms about this Tech team has been the performance of the two new coordinators. George Godsey replaced Buster Faulkner this offseason, and Jason Semore replaced Blake Gideon. Under Faulkner, GT had one of the best offenses in the country and Faulkner currently has the Florida Gators offense as one of the best in the nation through four games. Key has not been able to get the defensive side of the ball correct, but Semore was supposed to bring an attacking style of defense that creates havoc and forces turnovers. That has not happened yet so far this season.

>>When asked about the hires of Godsey and Semore, Key said he still believes in this duo, while also acknowledging that the results have not been there: "Confident they are (right for the jobs). You look at the first four games and say look at success and you're like, 'Are you crazy?' But we'll make necessary adjustments throughout the next two weeks to help put them in better position to be able to call the game and execute the game plan. But I still have confidence. I do."

ACC Football Power Rankings

>>With the midway point of the campaign right around the corner, only two teams in the conference are currently ranked in the top-25: No. 4 Miami and No. 21 SMU.

1. Miami Hurricanes (4-0; 2-0)

(Last Week #1: Beat Cent. Michigan 52-3)

>>(This week: @ Clemson Saturday night)

>>Miami is undefeated, though the Hurricanes haven't faced much competition outside of a road trip to Wake Forest. It'll be interesting to see how they look in Death Valley against Clemson this weekend. They dodge SMU and Louisville this year, and won't play a ranked opponent until a trip to Notre Dame.

2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3-1, 1-1)
(Last Week #8: Beat Louisville 30-27)

(This week: Saturday hosts Stanford).

>>The Deacons deserved a bump after giving Miami plenty of trouble and outlasting Louisville on the road. Gio Lopez is playing better than at UNC last year. Wake has a real chance to win its next 5 games, starting at home against Stanford.

3. Duke Blue Devils (4-0, 1-0)

(Last Week #5: Beat William & Mary 62-7)

(This week: Bye Week)

>>The Blue Devils have allowed fewer than 10 points in three of their four wins. Manny Diaz is proving himself each week, and will likely get some calls this offseason from teams searching for a new head coach. Duke is off this week before a trip to Georgia Tech.
