Georgia Tech & Georgia Renew Rivalry Friday In New Setting At Mercedes-Benz Stadium

By Don Stone

>>The Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will renew one of college football’s fiercest rivalries on Friday, November 28, 2025, in a first time ever location at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Both teams have combined for 19 total wins this season, making the latest chapter of “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” a high-stakes showdown with statewide pride and postseason implications.

>>Rivalry Steeped in History – It started in 1893 and continued through their last meeting in 2024 in one of the longest games in college football history…an eight-overtime game in the classic in Athens. The Yellow Jackets led 17-0 at halftime, but the Bulldogs pulled off another patented comeback to tie the game 27-27 with one minute remaining to force OT. In the 8th OT, UGA freshman Nate Frazier was across the goal line to win the exhausting marathon 44-42.

>>The Dawgs and Jackets have squared off over 115 times, creating decades of dramatic moments like that, upsets, and bragging rights. Georgia leads the all-time series 72-39-5 and has won seven straight. The rivalry is marked by deep emotion, as Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key has said, “There’s nothing I hate more in the world,” referring to Georgia. Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart, meanwhile, described it as “a chance at a state championship… a lot of pride, a lot of history in the game. But the game’s played between the lines, between the players”.

>>Star Quarterbacks Set for Duel – UGA’s Gunner Stockton has hit his stride in the season’s second half, throwing for 2,465 yards and 19 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions while leading the Dawgs to 10 wins. He’ll command an offense averaging 209 rushing yards per game and facing a Yellow Jackets defense looking for answers. On the other side, Haynes King is the engine behind Georgia Tech’s explosive attack, ranking among the ACC’s best while passing for over 3,000 yards and using his mobility to keep defenses off balance.

>>Of concern for Tech fans is the performance of its defense, which has given up a total of 126 yards combined in the last three games including an insurmountable 28-0 deficit last week in the home loss to Pitt, which knocked them out of an appearance in the ACC Championship Game.

Georgia Tech's HC Brent Key's Press Conference

Previewing Big Pitt Game

>>“Credit to Pitt and Coach Narduzzi—they came out and gave it to us for sure. We didn't play well enough to win, and that's what happens. You spot a team 28 points, you’re not executing on offense by any means, and you’re going to lose. “We couldn't establish the run, we had drops, poor protection, penalties, and definitely got our tails whooped at the line of scrimmage. Really, absolutely everything.”

>>“We know what they bring every year,” Key said of the Bulldogs. “They’re physical, talented, and well-coached. Every time we face Georgia, it’s a tough battle, and this year will be no different.” He acknowledged the significance of the rivalry, adding, “Playing Georgia in Atlanta, it means everything to our program and to our players. It’s a game we circle on the calendar.”

>>Addressing the loss to Pitt, Key said, “The last game showed us where we need to be better—starting fast, executing, limiting mistakes. We have to take the lessons from that and apply them right away. The Georgia game is a chance to show who we are.”

>>Key also focused on motivating his players: “They’re a resilient bunch. I’ve seen what they’re capable of when we play with discipline and heart. We’ve got six days, and it’s all about how we respond as a team. The Bulldogs are tough, but we’re going to bring our best.”

UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart Presser Previewing Georgia Tech

>>“It’s Georgia Tech week. A lot of respect for Brent [Key] and their program,” Smart said. “He’s done a tremendous job there. They’re extremely physical. You can tell they’re modeled kind of after what he believes in, which is running the ball and stopping the run.

>>Their quarterback is playing at an elite level—just a lot of respect for the way they play the game, and we’ve got a short week. So we’ve got a quick turn here to get ready for these guys and obviously play in Mercedes-Benz on Friday”.

>>Smart emphasized that no matter the records, the annual meeting is always significant. “For us, it’s the next game on the schedule. If we want to continue to grow and get better, then we’ve got to play well against them. They’ve got a really good football team. They’ve got a really physical football team,” Smart explained.

>>He also talked about keeping his team motivated and focused at this crucial point in the season: “It’s about continuing to grow, get more guys playing winning football, get guys healthy, and get ready for a big game next week,” Smart said. “It’s always a tough, physical game, and we know we’ll have to be at our best”.

Jackets Men's Hoops Pull Away From UWG for 5th Win

>>Georgia Tech men’s basketball (5-1) used powerful post play and its usual smothering defense to fight past West Georgia, 82-66 on Sunday afternoon inside McCamish Pavilion.

>>Junior forward Baye Ndongo stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, 14 rebounds and five assists – one of only three players in the Atlantic Coast Conference to record a 10-10-5 double-double, as the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-0 at home this season.

>>The Yellow Jackets dominated the glass all afternoon, out-rebounding UWG 48-28 over the course of the game, proving their prowess in the paint once again by outscoring UWG 52-20 down low.

>>One of college football’s most historic and bitter rivalries is renewed for the 119th time on Friday when No. 23/19 Georgia Tech hosts No. 4 Georgia for Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

>>The Yellow Jackets (9-2, 6-2 ACC) and Bulldogs (10-1, 7-1 SEC) have combined for 19 victories going into this season’s edition of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate, which is the teams’ most combined wins ever heading into their rivalry showdown.

>>This season also marks only the third time in series history that both teams bring at least nine wins into the matchup (Tech and UGA also had nine wins apiece going into the 1942 and 2014 editions of COFH).

>>Both teams are nationally ranked for only the 12th time in series history and the first time since their 2014 matchup.

>>Last year’s edition of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate was one for the ages, as Georgia outlasted Georgia Tech, 44-42, in eight overtimes at Sanford Stadium in Athens. The eight OTs were the second-most in NCAA Division I FBS history.

>>This year’s matchup features a pair of Heisman Trophy candidates at quarterback in Georgia Tech’s Haynes King and Georgia’s Gunner Stockton. King is averaging 339.9 yards of total offense per game (251.6 passing, 88.3 rushing) with 27 total touchdowns (15 rushing, 12 passing) while Stockton averages 256.9 total yards per game (221.4 passing, 32.8 rushing) with 27 TDs (19 passing, eight rushing).

ACC Football Power Rankings

>>Chaos has reigned supreme in the Atlantic Coast Conference up to this point in the season, at that was once again the case this past weekend.

>>None was more evident than in the ACC's marquee games of the weekend. Georgia Tech just needed one more win to officially punch their ticket to Charlotte for the ACC Championship Game, but Pitt had other ideas, instead pulling off the upset to keep their title hopes alive.

>>As a result of this, plus SMU's beatdown of Louisville, the championship scenarios range from fairly straightforward to complete and utter chaos.

>>There is currently a three-way tie for first place in the ACC, but two of these teams control their own destiny: SMU and Virginia. SMU heads to Cal while Virginia hosts Virginia Tech, and a win by either team would punch their respective tickets.

>>However, there are currently six teams that are still mathematically alive in the ACC title race. Pitt needs a win and a loss by either SMU or Virginia, while Miami, Duke and even Georgia Tech still have a shot - but need a lot more help.

1 - Virginia Cavaliers -
Record: 9-2, 5-1 ACC; Last Week: No. 2

Week 13 Result: Bye Week

>>Next: Saturday hosts Va. Tech 7:00 p.m.

2 - Pitt Panthers

Record: 8-3, 6-1 ACC; Last Week No. 4

Week 13 Result: Beat GT 42-28

>>Next: Saturday hosts Miami, 12:00 p.m.

3 - SMU Mustangs

Record 8-3, 6-1 ACC; Last Week: No. 3

Week 13 Beat Louisville 38-6

>>Next: Saturday @ California, 8:00 p.m.

4 - Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Record: 9-2, 6-2 ACC

Last Week's Ranking: No. 1

Week 13 Result: L, 42-28 vs. Pitt

Next: Friday vs Georgia, 3:30 p.m.

5 - Miami Hurricanes -
Record: 9-2, 5-2 ACC; Last Week: No. 5

Week 13 Result: Beat Virginia Tech 34-17

>>Next: Saturday at Pitt, 12:00 p.m.
