Georgia Tech Hosts Gardner-Webb For Home Opener | |
By Don Stone
>>Georgia Tech returns to Bobby Dodd Stadium on September 6, for its home opener against Gardner-Webb, with the Yellow Jackets looking to build on momentum from a strong road win at Colorado. Head coach Brent Key’s group will face a Runnin’ Bulldogs team riding high after a thrilling comeback victory in their own season opener, making for an intriguing matchup in Atlanta.
>>Gardner-Webb arrives with confidence after rallying from an early deficit to post a 52-45 victory over Western Carolina…the biggest comeback in school history. Graduate Quarterback Nate Hampton proved a dual threat, rushing for four touchdowns and passing for two more, supported by a run game boasting three backs with over 80 rushing yards each. The Bulldogs’ ability to score quickly and sustain drives makes them a potential test for the Tech defense.
>>Hampton has been tabbed the Stats Perform FCS National Player of the Week as well as Big South/OVC Football Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate and redshirt-junior linebacker Jamari Young was named Big South/OVC Football Defensive Player of the Week
>>Haynes King picked up some hardware himself as the Atlantic Coast Conference picked him as the ACC Quarterback of the Week. King headlines Tech’s offense after rushing for three touchdowns and passing for 143 yards in week one, giving the Jackets both leadership and production at QB. The Yellow Jackets showcased a balanced attack, racking up 463 total yards including 320 on the ground, while overcoming early turnovers and penalties to notch their first win.
>>Defensively, Georgia Tech held Colorado under 160 passing yards and limited big plays, but will aim for more takeaways against Gardner-Webb.
>>Coach Key talked about Saturday’s opponent. “We didn’t play great to start by any means… now it’s time to correct those things and move forward to Gardner-Webb, a team that was down 35 to seven against Western Carolina, who was a ranked team last week and ended up [scoring] 52 points, almost 650 yards total offense.”
>>He cautioned his team about facing a Bulldogs squad capable of explosive comebacks, adding, “You are looking at something that was a one, two percent chance of happening when you have that string of events… you are happy with how they overcame adversity, but that shows you have a good team. And if you want to have any opportunity or chance of having a great team, you cannot do those things. So we got a lot of work to do, started on Sunday when we were in here. And it’ll continue to go.”

Georgia Tech's HC Brent Key's Press Conference
Previewing Gardner-Webb
| |
>>Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key addressed the media in his September 2, press conference, sharing his thoughts on Gardner-Webb ahead of the upcoming matchup. Key began with respect for the opponent, stating, “I’ve seen what I’ve seen on tape of them. Film doesn’t lie, and Gardner-Webb has made a lot of improvements year over year. I have a lot of respect for Coach Cris Reisert and his staff from what they’ve done there.”
>>“They’ve got physical players. They’ve got size, very pro-style defense. The defensive ends are going to set the edge and keep contain. Obviously, when you watch film and see who we are offensively, we know this is going to be one of the big things they’ve worked on and coached.”
>>Key stressed the need for adaptability and execution, saying, “We know there’s going to be an extra in the box the majority of the time. You’ve got to have a way to affect that — I joked about throwing about 75 times in the game, but you take what the defense gives you. That’s football.”
>>He finished by refocusing on the team’s mentality for the matchup: “For any time you take over a program and build, you have to put those guys in a position to go out and play cohesive football and play together. Gardner-Webb has done a really good job of that, and we expect them to compete hard.”

Gardner-Webb Head Coach
Cris Reisert Presser Previewing Georgia Tech
| |
>>"You start Week One with a big win, its a big deal in terms of gaining confidence. We need to correct some issues that put us down 35-7, and we will. But, they came together and found a way to win.
>>In preparing for Georgia Tech with a running quarterback: "They're a good football team. They are really good along the fronts. Their offensive line and defensive lines are really impressive to watch on tape. Obviously, their speed everywhere on the back end is equally impressive.
>>Offensively, they go as the quarterback (Haynes King) goes and as the offensive line goes. The quarterback's a special dude at any level and as dynamic as it comes. The one thing they do offensively that poses some issues is they're a heavy formation, motion, move, trade, shift team. So, you've really got to be buttoned up in your principles. You've got to play assignment football and communicate really well in a loud environment.
>>"They do some things schematically that force you to be on your ‘Ps’ and ‘Qs.' We'll hopefully put ourselves in a position to play well on defense and go out there and have some success at Georgia Tech."

>>Georgia Tech opens the home portion of its 2025 schedule and puts a five-game winning streak at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field on the line when it hosts Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
>>• Georgia Tech opened the season with a hard-fought 27-20 victory at Colorado last Friday night. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over on each of three first three possessions (all in the first eight minutes of the game), but bounced back to score five of the last seven times they had the ball, capped by quarterback Haynes King’s game-winning 45-yard touchdown run with just 1:07 remaining.
>>• King was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Quarterback of the Week.
>>
>>• Gardner-Webb is fresh off an impressive come-from-behind victory of its own in last Saturday’s season opener at Western Carolina. Gardner-Webb rallied from a 35-7 deficit to defeat WCU, 52-45. It was the biggest comeback in school history. Grad QB Nate Hampton accounted for six touchdowns.
>>• Saturday’s matchup is the second all-time between Georgia Tech and Gardner-Webb. In 2008, Hall of Fame head coach Paul Johnson’s first season at Tech, the Yellow Jackets needed a field goal block by future first-round NFL Draft pick Derrick Morgan in the final 10 seconds of the game to eke out a 10-7 win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
>>• The 3:30 p.m. kickoff will be televised on ACC Network Extra.

ACC Football Power Rankings
>>It was a pretty good result from the ACC overall. Miami, Florida State, and Georgia Tech all won crucial non-conference games and Clemson played LSU down to the wire. The top of the ACC very interesting and that is before you get into good performances from teams like Duke.
>>1. Miami (1-0, 0-0): The Hurricanes were my preseason ACC favorite and they did nothing to shake my confidence in that with their win over No. 6 Notre Dame on Sunday night. The defense looks much better, Carson Beck looked effective under center, and the offensive line might be the nation's best.
>>2. Florida State (1-0, 0-0): What a win for Florida State. After a 2-10 season a year ago, the Seminoles completely flipped the script with their week one win over Alabama.
>>3. Clemson (0-1, 0-0): Clemson can still win the ACC, but it feels like they don't have the national championship type of team that the Tigers thought they had at the beginning of the season.
