Georgia Tech seeking complete-game effort vs. S.C. State
Quarterback Haynes King will look to build off a strong Georgia Tech debut when the Yellow Jackets host South Carolina State in Atlanta on Saturday.
After spending three seasons at Texas A&M, King looked poised with his new team last Friday, completing 19 of 32 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception, against Louisville.
His efforts weren't enough to overcome a 16-point fourth quarter from the Cardinals that tagged Georgia Tech (0-1) with a 39-34 loss.
Yellow Jackets coach Brent Key hopes his team can put together a more complete game on Saturday.
"We had a lot of new guys out there that played a lot of meaningful downs (Friday)," Key said. "We had some big plays made by some new guys out on the field. It was encouraging when those guys can go out and do that. But at the same time, we've got to be able to do it for the entirety of the football game."
Georgia Tech struggled to get the running game going during the second half against Louisville, but it should have no problem moving the ball on the ground against a Bulldogs team that has allowed an average of 179 rushing yards through its first two games.
South Carolina State (0-2) most recently allowed 220 rushing yards in a 24-3 setback to Charlotte last Saturday.

Georgia Tech's
Brent Key's Press Conference South Carolina State Preview
"Really excited to get here and play in our stadium. Excited to play South Carolina State. Coach (Buddy) Pough is a legend in his conference, in his division. He's finishing up his 27th year at his alma mater, retiring after this season. We played them many years ago when I was at UCF and he gave us a dogfight. They are well prepared and play hard.
"The most improvement can be made between game one and game two. In order to do that, you've got to be able to self access and be critical of yourself individually and collectively as a unit.
"Offensively, they're going to run the football. They've got a couple of quarterbacks who can make plays with their feet. They'e got two freshmen quarterbacks, #20 (Kacy Fields) and #22 (Jawarn Howell). One of them (Howell) is a big strong back, gets north and south. The other is more compact...slip screen routes, flair out of the backfield.
On defense, they were 4th in the country in the FCSS last year on havoc plays, disruption. They've got two guys on the D-Line, #43 (Patrick Godbolt) and #34 (Jeblonski Green, Jr.) that can cause some issues. Schematically, they're penetrating up the field. They've got a linebacker, #11 (Aaron Smith), who's got a chance to be an All-Conference player for them.

Georgia Tech returns to Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field for the first time in 2023 when it hosts South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon.
• The Yellow Jackets will open their 111th season at their venerable home stadium — the oldest on-campus football venue in NCAA Division I FBS.
• Georgia Tech is coming off a season-opening 39-34 loss to Louisville in last Friday’s Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Behind four second-quarter touchdowns, the Yellow Jackets raced out to a 28-13 halftime lead, but Louisville stormed back in the second half for the come-from-behind win.
• One of many bright spots for the Yellow Jackets in the season-opening defeat was the play of QB Haynes King. In his first game in the White and Gold after transferring to Georgia Tech from Texas A&M, King completed 19-of-32 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns. His 313 passing yards are tied for 23rd in Georgia Tech single-game history and are the most ever by a Jackets’ QB in his Tech debut (no other GT QB has ever thrown for 300 yards in his debut in the White and Gold).

Updated ESPN FPI Predictions for the rest of Tech's football schedule
|
Georgia Tech has started off the 2023 season 0-1 after a heartbreaking loss to Louisville last night. The Yellow Jackets looked improved in some areas, but a second-half collapse overshadowed some of those improvements. A win here would have given Georgia Tech's chances of a bowl game a big boost, but the Yellow Jackets were unable to finish the game.
Did Georgia Tech's performance vs Louisville affect how they are looked at in the remaining games? As it turns out, it actually did, at least according to ESPN's FPI.

Pimentel & Mendes Land Weekly ACC Volleyball Honors
|
Georgia Tech’s Paola Pimentel and Larissa Mendes earned Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors.
Pimentel anchored the Yellow Jackets’ defense as 11th-ranked Georgia Tech took down No. 12 Ohio State in back-to-back 3-1 victories. The senior libero from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, recorded 45 digs, averaging 5.63 per set. She registered 22 on Friday – one shy of her career high – before putting up 23 on Saturday – tying her career high. Pimentel now leads the league in digs per set at 5.13 and owns the third-highest tally for digs in a single match in the conference this season (23).
Pimentel’s performance pushed Georgia Tech to its 31st-ranked victory all-time as well as securing its third straight top-15 win for the first time in program history.
Larissa Mendes and Pitt’s Olivia Babcock shared Freshman of the Week laurels. Mendes also helped GT to staight wins over the Buckeyes, spearheading the Jacket attack with 30 kills, averaging 3.75 a set with a .286 clip over the weekend.
