Jackets Begin ACC Play Saturday Night At Stanford

By Don Stone, Georgia Tech Express

>>The non-conference tune-ups are officially over, and Georgia Tech football is stepping directly into a brand new phase of its season. Fresh off a 44-11 victory over Mercer, the Yellow Jackets are packing their bags for a historic, 5,000-mile round trip to face Stanford in California for their highly anticipated Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

>>While a nearly 2,500-mile flight to the West Coast and a grueling 10:30 p.m. EDT kickoff might give some logistical coordinators pause, head coach Brent Key flatly dismissed the noise.

>>“We’re playing a conference game,” Key smiled while attempting to deadpan to reporters ahead of Saturday’s matchup. “What’s the big deal?”

>>The Yellow Jackets (1-2) enter the matchup determined to correct the mistakes that have plagued them early in the year. Chief among those concerns is a lackluster run defense that surrendered nearly 200 yards on the ground last week against the Bears. Key made it clear that fixing the front seven is a major work in progress.

>>“You can’t play good run defense if you don’t set edges and you play downhill with your backers, right?” Key emphasized. “But they got to know where to be and what to do.”

>>On the offensive side of the ball, the Jackets are looking to generate rhythm and chemistry by spreading the wealth.

Georgia Tech's HC Brent Key's Press Conference

Week 4 Before Stanford

>>“Look, I say all the time, it’s how you play. It’s how you play the game. It’s the style of play. It’s what we do. And no, I wasn’t happy. And maybe I need to start doing what I did halftime pregame.”

>>"We’re changing (some things). Not Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, but starting on Thursday. We’ll leave on Thursday to head out there, and we will have some alternate plans on how we do things from Thursday really up until kickoff on Saturday.”

>>"No question man, it's a big game for us," Key emphasized, his voice carrying the gravity of the trip ahead. "It's a really, really big game for us as a program and being able to get this thing this year heading the right way."

>>"You can't get two in a row unless you get the first one," Key said. With that, he turned and walked out, his focus entirely shifted to the long flight west and the battle waiting in Palo Alto.

Stanford HC Tavita Pritchard

Press Conference

Previewing Georgia Tech

>>"What Stanford football has always been full of, what the university is full of, are competitors," Pritchard told reporters at his weekly media availability. "Let's not misunderstand what 'competing' means... It means being your best self every single day."

>>Stanford's main priority will be stopping Georgia Tech's potent ground game, which has given the Cardinal's defense major fits over the past two weeks. For Pritchard, forcing the Yellow Jackets to become one-dimensional is key to executing late in the game.

>>"We just need to find a way to make more plays in the clutch and execute late in the game," Pritchard noted regarding his squad's late-game focus.

>>Despite the early-season adversity, Pritchard expressed firm confidence in the overarching culture being created alongside his staff. He underscored that the structural foundation of his program remains completely unchanged heading into this definitive test.

>>"Competition, connection, and commitment," Pritchard said, reiterating his baseline expectations. "Those are the three that we'll build our program on."

Tech Opens Conference Play at Home Against Virginia Tech and Virginia

>>Georgia Tech volleyball (8-3, 0-0 ACC) comes off a four-match road stand to open ACC play on The Flats against Virginia Tech (3-6, 0-0 ACC) on Friday and Virginia (4-5, 0-0 ACC) on Saturday.

>>The Yellow Jackets most recently wrapped up their non-conference slate with a Saturday night rivalry match in Athens, Ga. against UGA.

>>Alida Bennour was nothing short of exceptional on Saturday night as she finished the match with 21 kills, two aces, three blocks, and 11 digs.

>>Her 21 kills were not only a new career high but also the first time a Yellow Jacket has surpassed 18+ kills this season so far. Bennour owns four of Tech’s top-five kill performances of the season with 17 kills against Loyola, 16 kills against Oklahoma and another 16 kills against the No. 1 Huskers.

>>In their 2025 meeting, the Yellow Jackets swept the Hokies including a 25-16 first set win. Sophomore Anna Fiedorowicz helped led Tech’s offense with nine kills alongside. >>Virginia Tech just got swept on Friday at South Carolina.

>>The Cavaliers, meanwhile, were also swept in their last match on Saturday at home vs Ohio State. They have a match at Clemson on Friday before coming to Atlanta.

>>Friday's match with Virginia Tech starts at 7:00 p.m. and is on ACCNX. Sunday with Virginia is at 1:00 p.m., also on ACCNX.

ACC Football Power Rankings

>>The ACC: The Always Chaos Conference! And boy, was that epitomized in Week 3 of college football! We had NC State losing a literal one-in-a-million scenario after failing to properly take a safety against Vanderbilt.

>>We had lightning delays that caused second-half heartbreaks for North Carolina and Florida State. And we had a showdown in Louisville that may have decided a participant in the ACC Championship game.

>>Here's where the ACC stands after Week 3.

1. Miami Hurricanes (3-0; 2-0)

(Last Week #1: Beat Wake Forest 33-20)

>>(This week: Sat. hosts Central Michigan)

>>Miami is legit, but the Hurricanes aren’t invincible Wake Forest exposed enough cracks to suggest Miami will have to play cleaner when the schedule gets tougher. Darian Mensah looks like the real deal.

>>The Hurricanes remain at the number one spot in the rankings but with losing two key players in CharMar Brown and Joshua Moore for the season due to injury and others being “banged up” according to Mario Cristobal, the gap between Miami and the rest of the ACC just got smaller

2. Louisville Cardinals (2-1; 1-0)

(Last Week #4: Beat SMU 41-31)

This week: Saturday hosts Wake Forest)

>>The Cardinals have proven themselves to be elite since Week one when they took Ole Miss to the final seconds of the game before losing on a field goal as time expired. After defeating another top 25 opponent in Week 3 in SMU the Cardinals have moved up to the second spot in the rankings.

3. SMU Mustangs (2-1; 1-1)
(Last Week #3: Lost at Louisville 41-31)

(This week: Saturday hosts Missouri State).

>>SMU may have lost the game, but the Mustangs didn’t lose their status as an ACC contender. Despite the loss to Louisville in week three the Musta>>ngs remain planted at the third position. SMU still have an elite offense led by fifth year senior quarterback Kevin Jennings, that is averaging 38 points a game.

>>Defensively they are averaging 25.0 points a game, which is up from their 20.5 points-per-game average in 2025.

>>The Mustangs had three turnovers in the loss, including a goal line fumble. Rhett Lashlee needs to clean up the turnovers as the season unfolds.

4. Virginia Tech Hokies (3-0; 1-0)

(Last Week #5: Lost at Maryland 35-26)

(This week: Saturday @ Boston College)

>>Virginia Tech may be the ACC’s biggest sleeper right now In the days of Frank Beamer, defense was the Hokies calling card, and that appears to be the case again under James Frankin, through three weeks the Tech defense is allowing just 16.67 points a game. >>Offensively, the Hokies have averaged 52 points a game, with 493.3 yards per game. VT is projected to finish in the middle of the conference, but, if play on both sides of the ball continues to remain elite, Virginia Tech could be a serious contender in the ACC.
