Yellow Jackets Travel To

No. 17/No. 19 Ole Miss

Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin is confident his Rebels won’t have issues getting ready for a team they handled so easily last season.

That’s partly because No. 17 Ole Miss (2-0) has so many newcomers who weren’t around for that 42-0 win over Georgia Tech (1-1), which visits Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the first time on Saturday night.

The game does present other challenges in timing. Ole Miss, which has a roster heavy on transfers, is fresh from a 37-20 victory over Tulane in a Top 25 matchup where the Rebels finished on a 30-3 scoring binge. Next week is a visit to No. 10 Alabama for the Southeastern Conference opener.

The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, are hoping to continue one early-season trend. ACC teams are 4-1 against SEC competition this season, a blow to the pride of a league that prides itself as college football's best.

Three other ranked SEC West teams — Alabama, No. 14 LSU and now-unranked Texas A&M — have already dropped nonconference games. LSU lost to the ACC's Florida State while the Aggies fell to Miami. No. 4 Texas of the Big 12 Conference beat Alabama.

Georgia Tech beat two ranked teams last season after Brent Key took over as interim coach. Now, he has the job full-time.

Key, who took over two games after that Ole Miss loss, isn't dwelling too much on last year's game.

“I don't remember Sunday. You think I'm going to remember last year? Seriously,” he quipped.

Georgia Tech's HC Brent Key's Press Conference

Ole Miss Preview

Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin served on the staff together at Alabama in 2016, when Kiffin was in his third and final season as the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and Key was in his first of three seasons as the Tide's offensive line coach.

He was asked if that familiarity helps in planning:

"I worked with him a long time ago. Really no factor in the game.

"The Rebels are the #3 passing team in the SEC with Tre Harris and (Jordan) Watkins.

"They get the ball deep a bunch of different ways. They do a good job of the play action complimenting the RPO game.

"I know what I've seen in the first two games. They're explosive with one of the best running backs in the country (Quinshon Judkins). That's what I know about Lane Kiffin. He's going to run the football. He's going to get number four going."

On Georgia Tech Wide Receiver

Chase Lane's Injury

"Chase will be out this week. We will continue to kinda see week-to-week with him and where it ends up. It is not a season-ending injury by any means."

Ole Miss Head Coach Lane Kiffin Press Conference Previewing Georgia Tech

On Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key, who Kiffin coached with at Alabama:

"He did a really good job. I've actually tried to hire him before at one point. Really good line coach, really good teacher, good recruiter, and he's doing a good job there."

On if the team will overlook Georgia Tech after beating them 42-0 last year:

"I don't think so. I think that normally, like you said, that would be a major issue, but, like you said, half the guys weren't here. I mean look at our starting defense. I think nowadays the year before doesn't mean hardly anything, and especially in this case."

On his first impressions of Tech:

"I think (QB Haynes King) is playing well, I think they run a good offense that presents some challenges. They look better on defense too, so they really do look like they're playing better than they were a year ago."

ACC Weekly Report: Click Click Here

Georgia Tech hits the road for the first time this season on Saturday when it travels to No. 17/19 Ole Miss.

• Despite being members of the Southeastern Conference together from the conference’s inaugural season in 1933 until Georgia Tech’s departure following the 1963 campaign, the Yellow Jackets are making their first-ever trip to Ole Miss. The Jackets and Rebels have met five times previously — twice at Tech (1946 and 2022) and three times in bowl games (1953 Sugar, 1971 Peach and 2013 Music City). Ole Miss leads the all-time series, 3-2.

• Saturday’s matchup pits two of college football’s most prolific offenses, as Georgia Tech and Ole Miss are ranked ninth and 13th, respectively, in total offense this season.

• The high-powered offenses are led by two of the nation’s top quarterbacks in Georgia Tech’s Haynes King (sixth nationally in touchdown passes, 12th in passing yards per game, 12th in total offense and 15th in passing efficiency) and Ole Miss’ Jaxon Dart (third in passing efficiency, ninth in TD passes, 11th in total offense and 13th in passing yards per game).

• Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin served on the staff together at Alabama in 2016, when Kiffin was in his third and final season as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach and Key was in his first of three seasons as the Tide’s offensive line coach.
