Ben Hill County Initiative Provides Backpacks and School Supplies

Ben Hill County Vice-Chairman Hope Harmon completed her 4th annual Backpack + School Supply Giveaway this week. Each year, with the generous support of local businesses, individuals and corporate sponsors, she provides children with a backpack filled with school supplies. This year, over 350 backpacks will be distributed at two drive thru events. Her twins, Alexander and Alexa, added some helping hands this year!

Gwinnett County Opens Two New Community Gardens

Harvest Gwinnett, a program of Live Healthy Gwinnett, was launched in 2019 to connect community members with hands-on environmental education, to improve local access to fresh produce and to nurture engagement opportunities leading to improved health outcomes. The first garden opened in Lawrenceville in May 2020 and produced more than 400 pounds of fresh food that was distributed to families served by local co-operative services, housing authorities and senior food distribution programs.

Union County Cannery: A Unique Pairing with the Farmers Market

The Union County Cannery is located next to the Farmer's Market and provides a location where people are able to can their produce for future use. The cannery is currently open by reservation only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. According to Union County Sole Commissioner Lamar Paris, "The cannery has been one of the best upgrades we have completed to one of our facilities making it more accessible and easier to use for everyone."

Walker County Distributes 10,500 Masks During Mask Up Monday

In a continuing effort to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, Walker County government gave away free face coverings to the community. Drive-thru distribution points were set up for “Mask Up Monday” at the Walker County Civic Center and Rossville City Hall. Over 8,000 face coverings were handed out at the Civic Center and another 2,500 were passed out in Rossville, for a total of more than 10,500 during the five-hour event.
