It looked very different from previous years, but ACCG and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG) hosted the 2020 Newly Elected Commissioners Conference in Athens-Clarke County this week. Over 90 new commissioners attended in person, abiding by social distancing and face covering requirements. Others will meet their state-mandated requirements by watching the recorded sessions. ACCG looks forward to welcoming this new class of elected leaders at future events!

In recognition of her significant achievements to Gwinnett County and the entire Atlanta region, Chairman Charlotte Nash was presented with the Atlanta Regional Commission's Harry West Visionary Leadership Award for 2020. Nash, who also served as ACCG President in 2015, is retiring after almost 40 years of elected and appointed leadership to the county.

The Walton County Commission recognized Chairman Kevin Little at his last commission meeting on Tuesday. Chairman Little who was elected in 2000 and served five terms, is retiring at the end of the year. During his tenure, the county has grown from approximately 60,000 to 100,000 residents, planned for future water needs through the building of Hard Labor Creek Reservoir and seen strong economic growth. Chairman Little also served as ACCG President in 2014. His family joined him to celebrate his accomplishments at his final meeting.

Counties across the state are marking the start of the holiday season this week by decking the halls at courthouses, county administration buildings and town squares. In Union County, a few snowflakes fell at the Union County Courthouse this week (pictured left). Beautiful wreaths adorned the doors of the Stewart County Courthouse as well.
