Winter Weather Blankets Georgia
Georgia has seen its share of winter weather during the month of January! White County Chairman Travis Turner shared this picture from last weekend after more than six inches of snow fell in the county. This photo actually was taken at night without a flash as a result of light reflecting off the snow. An additional round of freezing rain or snow is expected to impact parts of the state again this weekend.
At a state budget hearing this week, Georgia Department of Revenue Commissioner Robyn Crittenden said that the "marketplace facilitator" has generated approximately $1.16 billion in new sales tax revenue - with 55% going to state government and 45% - or $522 million - going to local governments. HB 276 (Marketplace Facilitator Tax Collection) was passed in 2020 and requires online platforms (like Amazon or EBay) that allow vendors to sell goods and services to collect sales taxes. This ACCG legislative priority has paid off in a big way for Georgia's counties!
Collaborating on Outdoor Recreation
Carroll County Chairman Michelle Morgan met this week with Rome-Floyd County elected officials, staff and trail enthusiasts about the Carrollton GreenBelt. She explained the role that elected officials play and the importance of the city-county relationship in making the project a success. The Georgia Department of Public Health's Environmental Health Office also is there.
Upson County Emergency Response Zone Awarded to Upson County EMS
After much work by county officials and staff, the Upson County Emergency Response Zone has been awarded to Upson County EMS effective February 14. In order to make this transition, the county had to apply for an EMS license, which required submitting a proposal for approval to the Region 4 EMS Council. The county is partnering with AmeriPro EMS to be the provider of emergency medical services. Chairman Norman Allen praised the efforts of the county staff and AmeriPro on this project.
