Lowndes County Chairman Wins National Award for Parks and Recreation Advocacy
Lowndes County Chairman Bill Slaughter was honored with a national award for his work in the parks and recreation community. The National Association of Park & Recreation Officials (NACPRO) named Slaughter its 2023 “Public Official of the Year”. He was nominated by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority for being a champion of the Authority throughout his ten years in office.

Emmanuel County Holds Ribbon Ceremony for New Emergency Operations Center
Emanuel County recently celebrated the opening of its new Emergency Operations Center. The center houses the county’s 911 call and dispatch command center, administrative offices for EMS and EMA, and a training/conference room. The new building was constructed with the assistance of state inmates under the supervision of the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Kemp Announces $20.7 Million Fiber Broadband Project in Lumpkin County
Gov. Kemp traveled to Lumpkin County this week to announce a $20.7 million fiber broadband project coming to the area. For the first time, 8,200 businesses, homes, and community institutions will have access to high-speed fiber internet. The infrastructure project is a result of a public–private partnership between Lumpkin County Government, the Development Authority of Lumpkin County, and Kinetic.

Habersham County EMS Staff Attends Training to Maintain Extraction Tools
Habersham County Emergency Services Battalion Chief Dwight McNally and Lt. Mack Palmer attended a class in Baltimore, Maryland, for servicing and maintaining Holmatro Extrication tools. The tools, purchased with FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant money, require annual testing and service to ensure they will be ready to perform whenever needed. With the training McNally and Palmer received, the work can now be performed in-house.

ACCG Executive Director Connects with Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture in Webster County
ACCG Executive Director Dave Wills joined Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tyler Harper in Webster County for a meeting with the owners of ERTH Products. The company uses peanut hulls and biosolids from wastewater treatment facilities to create composted, engineered soil amendments.

Rep. Martin Momtahan Awarded with a 2023 Legislative Service Award
ACCG Deputy Director of Governmental Affairs Todd Edwards presented a 2023 Legislative Service Award to Rep. Martin Momtahan during the recent Paulding County Commission meeting. Momtahan was recognized for his contributions to helping to address county concerns with several efforts which sought to preempt local governments’ zoning and land use authority for the past two legislative sessions. He was also instrumental in opposing HB 517 during the 2023 legislative session, a bill prohibiting prescribing local government zoning practices.

Chattahoochee County Honors Former Commissioner Walt Rosso
During a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, Chattahoochee County commissioners posthumously honored former commissioner Walt Rosso with a proclamation. The proclamation was presented to his family in honor of his service.

Walton County Holds Ribbon Cutting for New Employee Health Clinic
Walton County Government officials held a ribbon cutting for the new Employee Health Clinic. Located in downtown Monroe, the clinic will provide Walton County employees with easy access to quality healthcare and wellness services.

ACCG Staff and Board Members Meet with Georgia's Sheriffs Association
ACCG staff and Board members met with the leadership of the Georgia Sheriffs Association at their new office in Morgan County. Several issues were discussed, including mental health reform priorities, the New Sheriff's Certification program, ACCG Insurance, the Qualified Law Enforcement Tax Credit, and truck weight enforcement by local officers. Presidents and officers from both organizations were in attendance.
