Georgia Counties Stepping Up Census Outreach Efforts

Billions of federal funding passed through to local governments are based directly on or informed by Census data. Georgia is trailing the national response rate and is currently ranked 37th. While COVID-19 has hampered Census activities, the Census count is too important to ignore. Here's how several counties have reached out this week. Residents can complete their Census online, by phone or by mail this year. Learn more here.

Baker County Combines Census Awareness with Food Distribution

The Baker County Superior Court Clerk teamed up with the Baker County Board of Commissioners to host a two-day food distribution in conjunction with a 2020 Census promotion. Boxes filled with farm fresh produce were provided by the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/LAF in partnership with the USDA's Farmers to Families Food Box Program. Many thanks to the constitutional officers, the Baker County School District, county employees and volunteers who made this event a tremendous success with the distribution of over 800 food boxes.

Mask Up and Sign Up

in Tift County

Tift County used a combined approach to encourage their residents to wear a mask and also participate in the Census. County officials were successful in getting people to complete their Census when they came by to pick up a free mask.

Planning Census Outreach

in Dade County

COVID-19 did not slow down the Dade County Census 2020 planning team this week. They wore face coverings and socially distanced to discuss ways to improve their community's response rate.

Dawson County Chamber Hosts 15K Trail Run

The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce recently held a successful socially-distant event that had been postponed since March. The 2nd Annual Mountain Madness 15K Trail Run was held at the 800-acre Fausett Farms. Drive-thru temperature checks were conducted for everyone. Volunteers wore masks, water stations were sanitized regularly, snacks were prepackaged and and lunch was catered to enjoy picnic style. Runners from five different states enjoyed the challenging but beautiful run in the North Georgia mountains.

Fayette County GCIP Intern Gains Environmental Experience

Takiyah Christian, a UGA student majoring in Environmental Health Science, is interning this summer with the Fayette County Environmental Management Department through the Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP). During her internship, Christian will help improve and expand the environmental management department’s existing stormwater pollution prevention educational programs, resources, and outreach. 

Intern Puts GIS Knowledge

to Work in Lee County

Bailey Williams, a geology major at Georgia Southern University, completed her GIS Internship with Lee County. Over the course of her internship, Williams assisted the planning, zoning, and engineering departments by updating tax parcel data, zoning, land use maps, and creating a master address file for the 9-1-1 system and county department use.

Floyd County Launches COVID-19 Billboard Campaign

Floyd County is reminding their community to "Love Your Neighbor" by wearing a face mask, washing their hands and watching their distance through a digital billboard campaign that will run throughout Rome over the next month.
