ACCG and GMA Working Together to Make Georgia a Better Place to Live, Work & Play
This week, policy staff from ACCG and the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) met to discuss policy issues of mutual interest to counties and cities and how the two associations can work collaboratively. Topics included affordable housing, tax policy, transportation and LMIG funding, community affairs, preemption legislation & more.
Governor Kemp Swears in New Houston County District Attorney
On June 13, Governor Brian Kemp swore in Will Kendall as the District Attorney for the Houston County Judicial Circuit. Houston County Chairman Tommy Stalnaker and Sheriff Cullen Talton participated in the ceremony.

Union County Farmers Market Recipient of AgGeorgia Farmers Market Grant
The Union County Farmers Market was selected as one of three state winners of the $2,500 AgGeorgia Farmers Market Grant. To be eligible for the grant, markets had to be in AgGeorgia’s 79 county territory, be open at least eight days during a two-month period, and at least 50% of the vendors - five being the minimum - must sell agricultural products. The grant money will be used to advertise or promote the market.
Irwin County Holds Annual Planning Retreat
ACCG County Consulting team members Bill Twomey and Mary Beth Brownlee traveled to Irwin County (pictured) this week to help facilitate the county's two-day annual planning retreat. The County Consulting team provides a wide range of technical assistance to Georgia's counties.
Habersham County Emergency Services Hosts Auto Extrication with Advanced Patient Care
Habersham County Emergency Services hosted an Auto Extrication with Traumatic Injury Treatment training led by Rescue Redefined on May 20-22. This training was focused on increasing patient care and included staff from six surrounding agencies. During the three days, participants learned several techniques, including vehicle stabilization, trauma patient care, rapid extrication techniques, and practiced multiple scenarios involving vehicles in unstable or irregular situations.
 Harris County Prison Warden Named President of GPWA
Harris County Prison Warden, Cynthia Nelson, was named President of the Georgia Prison Wardens’ Association (GPWA) for 2022-23. Warden Nelson has been with the Harris County Correctional Institution since 2017 and has been a member of GPWA since 2002.
