Upson County Sheriff's Office
Conducts Dementia Training
Upson County Sheriff's Office staff, in partnership with Brightmoor Hospice, recently completed dementia training. Participants were equipped with glasses, gloves, headphones and shoe inserts that simulated the physical and mental challenges that a person with dementia experiences. They were asked to complete five simple tasks. Those who took part were able to debrief with healthcare professionals to discuss their experience and how their perspective changed.
ACCG Staff on the Road in Appling and Tift Counties
ACCG County Consulting Manager Bill Twomey and County Consulting Associate Mary Beth Brownlee were in Appling County this week to assist the commission in planning for their county manager search process.
ACCG Leadership Development Director Jeff Christie and Leadership Development Coordinator Nicole Logan recently spent a few days in Tift County hosting county officials for the ACCG Lifelong Learning Academy Spring Training. A total of 12 classes were offered over two days and 97 registrants from 62 counties participated.
Liberty County Chairman Donald Lovette Recognized
with Governor's Award for the Arts and Humanities
Governor Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp recently announced the recipients of the 10th annual Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities, presented by the Georgia Council for the Arts adn Georgia Humanities. This honor is awarded to individuals and organizations who contribute to and support the dynamic growth of Georgia's creative industries via community organization and involvement, innovative programs, and financial assistnace. Among the group of honorees was Liberty County Chairman Donald Lovette, who was recognized for writing plays which started out as a way to help his church youth group. Now he has alumni of Love-It Productions acting and performing on all levels.
Habersham County Receives Three "Best of" Awards from The Northeast Georgian
Every year, The Northeast Georgian asks local readers to vote on the "Best of Habersham" winners for each of the more than 150 categories. Habersham County took home three "best" categories this year: Habersham County Commissioner Ty Akins was named the Best Elected Official; Habersham County Battalion Chief Michael Alexander was named the Best EMT; and Habersham County Sherrif's Deputy Adam Ivester was named the Best Law Enforcement Officer.
Ware County Opens New Training Center
The James E. Blackburn, Sr. Public Safety Training Center, a joint SPLOST project of Ware County and the city of Waycross, recently opened. The facility consists of a training tower and burn building, a state-of-the-art outdoor firearms range and a classroom for training and certification classes. The training tower is a five-story building (pictured) with interior and exterior stairways and windows and includes a fog machine that can simulate smoke so that firefighters can learn to search for and rescue victims. The building also can be used by law enforcement for tactical training when entering and securing a building, and for ropes training.
