Honoring Fallen Heroes
on Peace Officers Memorial Day
The Macon-Bibb County community gathered on Friday to honor 34 fallen officers during its annual Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony. Each year, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, the Macon-Bibb Fire Department, the former Macon Police Department and the Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation join together to recognize individuals who have died in the line of duty. Two names were added to the Bibb County Sheriff's Memorial this year, and the families of Christopher Wilson Knight and William "Bill" Warren Gay unveiled their names.
Counties Celebrate
National Public Works Week
Counties across the country celebrated National Public Works Week this week (May 15 - 21). Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has sponsored this week to help educate the public on the importance of public works to their daily lives and community. Lowndes County celebrated the over 75 employees in their Public Works Department who maintain over 810 miles of roads, 53 county-owned facilities and more than 460 county vehicles, as well as provide mosquito and litter control, road asphalt patching, signs and construction.
County Officials Celebrate
Graduations at All Levels
Graduation season is well underway this month. County officials are helping to recognize the achievements of students, from the littlest in Pre-K to high school and college graduates. In Liberty County, Chairman Donald Lovette spoke to the Pre-K graduates of the Alice & Mary Wonderland Daycare and Pre-K Center. His message was simple - graduate, graduate, graduate!
County Commissions Show Appreciation to First Responders
The Jones County Commission recently brought lunch to the Sherif's Office to thank them for their service to the community.
The Stephens County Commission recently showed its appreciation to its volunteer firefighters by presenting them with Honey Baked Hams.
Douglas County and State Officials Break Ground on New Driver Services Center
Douglas County and state officials broke ground this week on a new 8,000-square foot, $3.4 million drivers services building. In October 2021, the Board of Commissioners voted to enter into an agreement with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) to build the facility. The county purchased the property for the location and DDS will acquire the land after all the site work is complete. DDS will oversee the construction of the customer service center.
