Like with a Cherry on Top... Only the Toombs County Way
Toombs County added a unique topper to the dome of its new courthouse this week - an 8-foot by 10-foot replica of a sweet Vidalia onion! Vidalia is the largest city in Toombs County and is known as the "Sweet Onion Capital of the World." Toombs County Chairman and ACCG 2nd Vice President David Sikes (pictured left) says, "It is the highest onion in the world, sitting atop the dome at 97 feet off the ground!"
Gwinnett County Student Receives ACCG Youth Leadership Award
Congratulations to Gwinnett Youth Commissioner Lucero Mendez who was presented this week with the ACCG Youth Leadership Award during the Gwinnett County Commission meeting. Mendez was recognized for her dedication to the program as well as for being an outstanding and engaged student.
ACCG's Workers' Compensation Fund Awards $6 Million Cash Distribution
After assessing the strength and stability of the ACCG - Group Self-Insurance Workers' Compensation Fund, the Board of Trustees agreed to return a portion of the investment and underwriting gains to members. Approximately $6 million is being disbursed as a special cash distribution to organizations that have been in the program since 2015. ACCG Insurance Programs Marketing Field Services Representative Joe Dan Thompson presented a check to Union County Sole Commissioner Lamar Paris this week.
Habersham County Commissioner Shares Family Heritage through Beekeeping
Habersham County Commissioner Bruce Harkness helped to recognize World Bee Day on May 20. Commissioner Harkness' ancestors brought honeybees to the county in the late 1700s from Virginia down through North Carolina and into Georgia after the American Revoluation. He started helping his grandparents and their neighbors with honeybees over 50 years ago and has been teaching beekeeping classes for over 40 years.
Catoosa County Commission Recognizes
Local Transportation Department for National Award
The Catoosa County Road Department of Transportation received the American Public Works Associaton's 2021 Georgia Project of the Year Award for the emergency construction and repair of a slope faliure on East Nickajack Road. This was a tedious and technically challenging stabilization job to repair a section of the road that was sliding downhill.
Newton County Celebrates Ribbon Cutting for New Playground
Newton County commissioners recently celebrated a ribbon-cutting for a new playground and outside workout equipment at Fairview Community Park. The park was opened in 2010 and was in need of upgrades and repairs. Commissioner Alana Sanders worked with the Georgia Recreation and Park Association to develop recommendations to make the park safe and more functional and championed the local effort for improvements.
